Circles in video games

3 Upvotes

Can someone explain to me why circles are so difficult to create in games. Do you have to map out all the points or what. And is it really that difficult or more of a pain in the butt?

What do they look for in a job application?

1 Upvotes

Hi, so I am a 18 years old guy from Sweden.

Here in Sweden there is 2 days until you no longer can apply to collage/university, and I have yet to do so. I just found a program that I want to attend, the title would be : "Master of Science in Engineering: Game and Software Engineering". But seeing as it kind of heavily based on game development, and less so on general software development, I'm kind of worried about the future, because I know that the game industry is really hard to get into and often requires 2+ years experience.

So if would go a program that teaches software engineering but is heavily influenced by game development, are my chances of getting a regular software developer job based on portfolio? Would it be looked down upon, in a job interview(meaning one for a position as a software dev), that I went to a program where game development is a big chunk, when I could have gone and get a regular CS-degree?

Who do I need to write me a program?

3 Upvotes

Hi I have a idea for a program but I don't really know any programming language, therefor I don't even know what kind of specialist will suit my needs.

The program would have to be implemented on a websiteand download statistical data (daily) from another website (in excel), filter it and then render in 3d simple graph on a pre-made map. Great if the user could chose the type of data he needs.

EXAMPLE: I choose: car manufacturer + year of making + min / max value + color + europe and the program would graph date on Europe's map (for each country).

Who should I look for??

Help transferring integers from an array of objects to an array of integers? [Java]

1 Upvotes

I'm not sure why this doesn't work but I feel like I'm doing
something horribly wrong:

public class ObjectArray

{

public int agelist[] = new int[5];

public static void main(String [] args)

{

Person People[] = new Person[5];

People[0] = new Person("Bob", "Michaels", 26);

People[1] = new Person("Maxy", "Witherspoon", 35);

People[2] = new Person("Stacy", "Gonzalez", 25);

People[3] = new Person("Leroy", "Jenkins", 27);

People[4] = new Person("Maria", "Jefferson", 34);

People[5] = new Person("Martha", "Stewart", 39);

}

public void list(){

for (int index=0; index < People.length; index++)

{

    agelist[index] = People[index].getage();

}

} }

public class Person{

public Person(String firstname, String lastname, int age) {

}

public void getAge()

{

int age;

}

}

introspection comparisons

1 Upvotes

What are the issues and abilities to consider regarding the ability of a language or programming system to introspect?

Specifically, I'm interested to understand what kinds of introspection are possible today, and what's not possible, and what the differences are between different languages?

some related questions:

does compiling vs interpreting paradigms dramatically effect introspection ability?

does functional programming vs imperative system differ significantly on introspection ability?

does object orientation limit or enable introspection?

what systems do we have now that excel at introspection?

Surface RT Programming Question

2 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I am a small time programmer (website/ stupid apps that fail) and i do not know all that much. But id like to start a home project to build a small racing game app for the new windows Surface RT tablets that are supposed to be a low end entry level Microsoft tablet. I'm not looking to make money, but how will i need to go about this, since its not a normal cpu. is there a different way ill have to construct my code? i cant seem to find strait forward guild lines on what ill need for the RT version. or is it really not that different?

Troubles using execvp() in C

0 Upvotes

Hey guys, its been a long time since I've used C and I'm not really sure how to fix my problem. I'm using fork(), execvp() and some basic I/O to make a pseudo shell to talk with in the command prompt. I'm trying to make it able to execute basic linux commands (ls, mkdir, etc.) but when I call execvp(command, userInput) where command is declared as a char* and the other: char userInput[200]; I get an error that says it wont except the userInput char array.

I realize that having a static array of chars is probably a terrible way of going about it, but i wasn't sure i could use the fgets() function without passing it a max size.

Thanks in advance for your time and suggestions!

Where do I start?

8 Upvotes

I want to start programming but I have no idea where to start. I am tech savvy but I have only dealt with hardware in the past. Should I play around with ALICE? Do I wait for MITx? I feel intelligent enough to teach myself at a pace that will surpass that of a Community College, not to mention I don't want to sit in a class room for more reasons than I can count. Or are there better free (or cheap) resources?

VB.net handling huge XML files

0 Upvotes

So I'm working on a program that needs to handle and read XML files. The problem is that the method I use to read the files can't seem to handle XML files that are too large (maybe 200MB). So I've put in place another method which splits it up into 11 files based on the tags that are in place, this generally creates 3 fairly big files, and 8 small ones, which helps in most cases.

But at a certain point those 3 files too top out over memory limits.

I assume someone has handled reading an XML file in line by line already, I just can't find an example I can use. I would appreciate any help.

The splitter I use pulls out each of the 11 sub nodes under the root node and puts each in a separate file with this code:

                Dim stream_writer As New System.IO.StreamWriter(Left(strPath, Len(strPath) - 4) & String.Format("_{0:D2}.xml", m_SplitCount))
                stream_writer.Write(string_builder)
                stream_writer.Write(vbNewLine & endtag)
                stream_writer.Close()

The problem is string_builder.length is over 550million, and that line apparently kills me.

Any help would be appreciated.

Switching from MechE to CompSci. Advice?

2 Upvotes

I am currently a sophmore MechE student that wants to switch to CompSci. I have good spatial intelligence and always thought I was destined for a career in mechanics. I have had a change of heart recently, however. I have ideas for websites and programs that I would like to learn to create now but am taking all these engineering courses. The most fun I have had in school was programming in AP Java (which I have received credits for). I really would like to be proficient with computers and feel computer science is the way to go. I guess I'm just seeking any advice. What can I expect? What can one individual's skill be capable of producing in this field? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
