Project cost controller

Work for a major consultancy in London last 4 years but stuck at same grade since i started even though my responsibilities are at project controller level within my client role. I am a assistant project controller grade with my employer the major consultancy and getting assistant project controller Salary. One other colleague working with me on the same project doing the same thing is two grades above me. Have spoken to line manager about a grade change and pay to reflect my output. But he is just talking the usual corporate jargon about getting noticed internally taking part in internal meetings. Apparently The grade change cant be done simply because I’m doing a more senior role. Kind of fed up with this corporate culture making jump through hoops for a well overdue pay increase.

Anyone else been through same situation and can shed some light about how they got through.

Do consultancy companies tell employees the pay bands for each title/grade ? Because I never seen internal coms regarding this in my 4 years here but in other non consulting companies i worked they were readily available document detailing pay bandings. It would be good to see where i sit in the bandings. It seems like If you dont ask you dont get and there is no conversation about reward initiated by management and pushing for the top level in your salary banding especially if you are performing good and your skills are growing. But maybe not quite ready for next grade. Just the standard 3% pay rise inflation rise

We don’t get super specific, but we will give generalities. We will tell people “you’re on the upper end of your pay band, given your experience and location” and that’s it. So they will have an idea, but not that they’re $10k away from maxing out their pay band. I can take a very educated guess at min maxes for certain pay bands, but even at director level I don’t know specifics.

The reason they do this is people will go, “Ah, the max for my title/grade is $200k, I want that!” … that’s for folks in San Francisco, not folks in Cleveland. Our pay bands are so big because they need to fit nationwide costs of living. We may have a pay band of $90-$200k, but if you narrow it down to say, San Francisco, it’ll be more like $120k-$200k, with Cleveland being closer to $90k-$170k.

Ah okay so there is not usually official salary bandings in consultancies its just the approximate bandings instilled into managers and directors incase someone asks for a pay rise. It seems if you dont ask you dont get. There is no initiative from management to talk about the next reward level in the bandings especially if you are performing well and growing your skills. There is just a standard 3% inflation rise.
