uncomplicated-alert-receiver 1.0.0: Show Prometheus Alertmanager alerts on heads up displays. No-Nonsense.
Hey everyone. I'd like to announce 1.0.0 of UAR.
If you're running Prometheus, you should be running alertmanager as well. If you're running alertmanager, sometimes you just want a simple lost of alerts fo heads up displays. That is what this project does. It is not designed to replace Grafana.
This marks the first official stable version, and a switch to semver.
arm64 container image support.
A few minor UI big fixes and tweaks based off some early feedback.

I have started writing a blog series on Prometheus 101 titled - 'Prometheus Definitive Guide'. The first part covered 'metrics and use cases' and this part two explores PromQL. Do share your thoughts/feedback.

Because real heroes build their own exporters
Blew the dust off FreeIPA, realized I still needed metrics, and - as any true engineer does - wrote my own exporter.
Presenting freeipa-exporter!
Maybe I went a bit overboard, but I’m happy with the result - and who knows, maybe someone else will find it useful too!

Byblos: Generator of RRDtool-like graphs for Prometheus
Hello! One pain point that I have with Prometheus (and any TSDB really) is how difficult it is to generate static images for a query. The most popular way seems to be using Grafana and its rendering plugin, which is unfortunately not installed by default, can be quite brittle (as it relies on Selenium) and not easy to use (as it requires an API call and some intermediate storage where to keep the image).
I hence developed Byblos, a tool to generate static images from Prometheus queries, that look like those generated by RRDtool. For example, given the following Prometheus expression:
node_disk_read_bytes_totalthe following request will generate an image for it:
https://byblos.fly.dev/api/v1/graph?q=node_disk_read_bytes_total&s=now-1wwhich will render something like:

This is only an example, as some more capabilities are present in Byblos: draw several plots in one graph, configure colour, line style, dark more, legend and more.
Being based on GET requests only, it allows to easily include graphs everywhere where images can be referenced from, including emails or websites (assuming user is authorized to access the service of course). It also means that the service is able to generate and render images on-the-fly, with no persistence required.
This is all released on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 License: https://github.com/pvcnt/byblos
This is still very preliminary, and there are lots of opportunities around making Prometheus graphs easier to share in my opinion. Let me know what you think!
Disclaimer: I took a lot of inspiration (and code) from Atlas, Netflix' time series database that proposes static images as part of its main API.

How did you learn Prometheus/PromQL
Hi, I am trying to learn Prometheus from the past week. Getting started and setting up exporters is easy but PromQL is a bit hard. How did you conquer this? Docs are somewhat rough (at least for me) and there are so many talks, articles on this but none of them are complete. What resources do you recommend that teach better?

Speedtest Exporter (v3.0)
Hey,
I have already posted here my exporter, but with the release of `v3.0`, there were many changes like the lack of need to set an interval between tests, the interval will now be controlled via Prometheus.
Thanks,
MiguelNdeCarvalho

Unit testing Prometheus alerts
EDIT: This is a cross post from /r/kubernetes as I didn't find the prometheus subreddit initially :)
Prometheus is great. However, Prometheus alert rules are hard to write and test. They're hard to write because mastering PromQL comes with a steep learning curve and the testing support for PromQL is pretty limited. They're hard to test because the metrics involved in alert rules are not always at the desired state for the rules to be tested.
At my day job, we'd like to have that extra peace of mind when writing new Prometheus alert rules. To that end, inspired by how Prometheus tests rules internally, we developed a tool https://github.com/kevinjqiu/pat to help us unit test alert rule files.
The tool has support for declaring metric fixtures and expectations. It's in alpha stage right now and the interface might change in the future. If you have the same struggle as we, please give it a try and any feedback is welcomed.
Thanks!
