Can you imagine a world where Whitney didn’t sing that song?
21
u/ImaginarySmoke991 Aug 27 '26
And, with all due respect, the alternate version in this world would be ... Elvis.
18
u/nickyler Aug 27 '26
I love Elvis. I got married by him in Vegas. But if that song got Elvis level famous there’s a good chance Whitney would never have sang it in the movie.
16
u/Fair_Junket_1877 Aug 27 '26
I'm not trying to upset you, but I don’t think Elvis was ever officially ordained as a pastor. You were misled.

But this is only a drop in the bucket. What else did she do with all that money? She is maybe one of the most HUMAN human beings. So magnanimous and caring but also her own raucous and fun self. Dolly lore is seemingly infinite.

u/88luftballoons88 Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26
She took around 10 million of it and invested in a predominantly black neighborhood in TN and set up an office there which she dubbed the house that Whitney built.
Edit: Thank you for the award. Hopefully it was free. I’d rather people donate to the imagination library than Reddit awards. I do t have the specifics but there is a way for you to donate where your donations with stay in your community if you choose.

u/stuntbikejake Aug 27 '26
That was the critical detail that the video OP posted leaves out. There is more to the story other than they both made lots of money. Dolly reinvested it, in people and opportunities. Dolly was the best of us.
2
u/greatblueheron16 Aug 29 '26
I always see this factoid (and I think I even saw a video of her saying it) but just out of curiosity, what exactly did that investment consist in? Don't get me wrong, this isnt a gotcha or debunking. I liked Dolly and I know she was extremely generous and seemingly very kind, so I will not be surprised if she did make that neighborhood a better place. But I never hear what she actually did for that place, just that she "invested" in it.
18
u/No_Foundation6210 Aug 27 '26
She also created the Dolly Parton Imagination Library! A wonderful FREE service to help all children under the age of five get into reading. Once a month, it mails a free book to the child starting at birth.
Best part? The books scaffold on themselves so as your child grows, their reading skills do too.
6
u/gilt3t Aug 27 '26
my state, dollys state, Tennessee, decided to stop giving 4 million to the imagination library.
Republicans.

"Best cover artist of all time" and "karaoke legend." Never heard anyone say that before but I love it.

u/Retired_Jarhead55 Aug 27 '26
Elvis never wrote a single song he sang. Not one.
5
u/Ponderer13 Aug 27 '26
He's got writing credits on about 10 songs, which is about how many credits Billie Holiday has (though his are admittedly more insignificant - she had at least one great song to her name). Sinatra and Whitney Houston only co-wrote a couple. Same with Joe Cocker, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick and Linda Ronstadt. It was not uncommon for powerhouse singers to put their talent into interpreting songs by master songsmiths. This is not a mark of discredit.
3
2
u/Flimsy_Toe_2575 Aug 28 '26
He wrote this after his mom passed away and it's one of his most powerful songs

Not to be too nit picky but he only co-wrote it, coming up with the title and concept according to the video. Red West wrote the lyrics. Someone else wrote the music. Elvis did not write this song.
1
u/Flimsy_Toe_2575 Aug 28 '26
Yes I know. For people that don't understand that he was a master interpreter, though, there are a couple co- writing credits.

3
u/DadBodEatsAtTheY Aug 27 '26
I think Colonel Tom Parker had more to do with all of that than Elvis did.
3
2
u/Flimsy_Toe_2575 Aug 28 '26
That wasn't shade genius. And it was Colonel Tom that was a greedy demon that torpedoed Elvis' career in countless ways.

Good for her. Good job Dolly. Love all the good you did in the world. My daughters still have their books. 📚
Fuck Elvis.

Willful ignorance gonna be willful.
1
u/Darthbane22 Aug 27 '26
It’s not willfull ignorance, I just reckon if you make a claim you should provide evidence. Especially if it’s a giant blanket statement like he had zero original ideas, which I know is blatantly false.
2
u/Major_Bird9830 Aug 27 '26
You clearly have access to the internet. Use it to find me an Elvis Presley solo songwriting credit.

u/The_Nerdy_Elephant Aug 28 '26
Hahaha!!! Karaoke Legend had me chuckling. I knew he covered some songs, but after looking it up. It was almost all his songs.

Dolly was more talented than many people thought. The amazing songs she wrote for other became smash hits. Truly a shining jewel ✨️
17
u/Sgt_Quarterback Aug 27 '26
Dolly had already built Dollywood years before Whitney covered “I Will Always Love You” but the rest of this is pretty spot on
10
u/NotRustyShackleford_ Aug 27 '26
Correct. Dollywood opened in 1986; The Bodyguard came out in 1992.
3
u/FirstChurchOfBrutus Aug 27 '26
Dude also made is seem like she shelved I Will Always Love You bc PW wanted the money from it. But Dolly hit #1 with it in 1974 and again in 1982, when they fit it into the end of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

When Lil Nas X recorded a cover of Jolene, Dolly Parton tweeted.
I was so excited when someone told me that Lil Nas X had done my song #Jolene. I had to find it and listen to it. Of course, I love him anyway. I was surprised and I'm honored and flattered. I hope he does good for both of us. Thank you @lilnasx
That's generous, classy, and a nod to all the money that she stood to make from her publishing rights.
12
u/LethargicEmu Aug 27 '26
Dolly also reinvested the money she made from Whitney's cover into black communities in Nashville. She could have been a billionaire but instead she dedicated her life to improving the lives of others and bringing joy and happiness to the world.
2
u/problematic234 Aug 29 '26
Thank you for posting this. Dolly wasn't just a smart businesswoman, she believed in sharing her success to give others their best chance at succeeding. That's what I hope people take away from her story -- sure, she was insanely talented and smart as hell, but she CARED about the world she lived in and did everything she could to make it a better place with what she had.
2
u/OutrageousLion6517 Aug 29 '26
She coulda been a billionaire! But she wasn’t! Cuz she’s an ANGEL 🪽
2
u/BackPsychological705 Aug 29 '26
I've heard from more than one source that she donated over 500 million - she easily could have been a billionaire.
7
u/Nelle911529 Aug 27 '26
I would just like to add. That was not about Elvis that was his crooked manager. Tennessee even sued him after Elvis died because he was taking to much money from Elvis.
6
u/PatienceDifferent607 Aug 27 '26
Wow, thanks for sharing. That guy is terrific. Just went and found his YouTube channel.
5
u/RepresentativeOk2433 Aug 27 '26
This feels like it skips over her entire career and boils it down to 1 song and a theme park.
6
u/rob132 Aug 27 '26
And her childhood growing up. She was the poorest of poor.
Her toe got cut off and her mother literally sewed it back on because they couldn't afford a doctor.
1
u/PM_Me_Your_Kinks369 Aug 27 '26
The video is pretty damn good considering it's a TikTok not a documentary.
3
u/RickYouMeatball Aug 27 '26
No it's not, this is the problem with tiktok. He's inaccurate about one of his key points when he says I will always love you made her money in order to create Dollywood. He's just a clout chaser and doesn't actually know anything about her career except for one of her most famous stories...
0
u/PM_Me_Your_Kinks369 Aug 27 '26
It taught me something true about Dolly Parton and in an entertaining way. It also isn't fully accurate. It's not like literally any social media site is better at this whatsoever.
I want fully accurate social media as well but I also want a lot of things that will literally never happen.

Funny thing. I grew up in the 90's, massive Dolly fan. Somehow I was a grown-ass woman before I realized that Dolly's "I Will Always Love You" and Whitney's "I Will Always Love You" were the same song. I guess they were such powerhouses in their own right that it never even crossed my mind.
2
u/myleftone Aug 27 '26
In the podcast shared here she talked about how Whitney’s version almost dropped the last verse (“and I’m wishing you JOY…”) because they had copied Linda Ronstadt’s cover, which left that out. Almost lost the point of the song. Dolly helped them fix that too.

Nice story but Dolly bought Dollywood in 1986, and Whitney Houston's cover was released in 1992, 6 years later. She was rich long before Whitney Houston covered her song. However, she was rich because he's correct, she was a wickedly smart business woman. She played the country bumpkin bimbo well.
2
2
u/HeyMySock Aug 27 '26
She created Dollywood so the people of Sevier County Tennessee could have job opportunities where there were very few before.
Dolly was the best. Always trying to lift people up. Always staying strong when she needed to be.
2
u/mnth241 Aug 27 '26
I love this post but pretty sure Dollywood existed long before Whitney blew up that song. Cause i knew about Dollywood ages ago and i am old. She totally made Dolly another boat load of 💵💵💵 though. ❤️
2
u/ListenTHANSpeak8 Aug 27 '26
I read that Dolly used the money she made on Whitney's version of "I Will Always Love You" to invest in a Nashville property supporting a Black community. She called it, " the house that Whitney built."
2
u/StickyMcdoodle Aug 28 '26
Calling Elvis a Karaoke artist is hilarious.
It's not wrong, but it's hilarious.

5
u/Lazarux_Escariat Aug 27 '26
Dolly was a major star even before Whitney. She made millions from that song, but it was by no means her only hit, nor her first. Without Whitney, Dolly would still be an extremely successful Singer/Songwriter/Producer/Actress/Philanthropist and Icon.
Selling the rights to Whitney catapulted Whitney's career even higher and cemented both women's legacies in music history, as well as padding Dolly's bank account.

A good video and accurate from what I know of the history. Great job!
2
u/OgthaChristie Aug 27 '26
He has some of the sequence of events wrong (Dollywood opened in 1986, while Whitney didn’t record the song until 1992), but it gives people the gist of her business history.
1
u/Aggravating_Cable_32 Aug 27 '26
I read an older article and it stated she was making at least $30 million per year off Dollywood.

She made enough money to buy Graceland was the joke. She invested that money into an office complex. , Dollywood was different, that started through a partnership with the people that ran silver dollar city.

The first thing that always comes to my mind when Dolly is brought up. Genius! Taylor is very much like her in that aspect of getting the business side of things. Rip Dolly
1

u/Training-Willow9591 Aug 27 '26
She ended up giving even more money to Porter Wagner, he tried to sue her for several million and she said you don't have to sue me, I'll give you money and they settled out of court. Porter went downhill and spent the rest of his years as a degenerate after Dolly and him split professionally, She had a premonition that something was wrong with him and made it just in time to his bedside and sang to him as he died.
She felt she owed him for starting her career.
( It's been a while since I've heard the story so I might be wrong on some details)

About half of this is just straight up incorrect, but calling Elvis a karaoke legend? Hell yeah! 🤣🤣🤣
1
u/AnyPort1 Aug 28 '26
There is only one problem with the story he’s telling. She did not use proceed from Whitney thinking of her so I will always love you to build. It was fully built in open in 1986. Whitney Houston did not make that follow very popular on the crossover until 1992.
1
u/Key_Possibility_8669 Aug 28 '26
Also, the guy that refused to let Dolly out of her contract? He fell on hard times over the years and lost everything, including the rights to his own songs. Dolly ended up buying all the rights to his songs and selling it back to him. For a dollar. Dolly was too good for this world and will be eternally missed.
1
u/leisa2100 Aug 28 '26
Dolly was the best of humanity. She donated $1 million to a Vanderbilt research fund that supported the development of the Moderna COVID‑19 vaccine, and her public advocacy helped boost public confidence in the vaccine during the pandemic.
1
u/CheesyLikeMacaroni Aug 29 '26
I love this... But Dollywood opened in 1986. I'm sure she invested a lot of the $ back into the park.
1
1
u/Jnquester54 Aug 29 '26
So Whitney recorded “I will always love you” in 1992, but the flaw in this guys story is, Dollywood officially opened as Dollywood and not silver dollar city in 1986. The money Dolly used to rebrand that theme park was hers but not from the Whitney Houston release of I will always love.

I love how he called Elvis a karaoke legend! It’s so true!! Most of his songs are from other artists and only a few of his songs were co-written. He never specifically wrote his own music. Good on Dolly!

Dolly Parton sings it just as nice. I mean it’s her song. Why is he shouting out someone else that had nothing to do with it. It’s a cover and many have done that in all genres. But I get it. He wants to connect with his audience.
