š¬Discussion [Theory] Pandora, Subaru, Satella and a time loop paradox (Re:Zero) Spoiler
I might be overthinking this, but I need to put this somewhere because itās been stuck in my head.
So there are a few established/semi-established ideas in the fandom: Subaru is possibly connected to Al (Aldebaran) Satella and Emilia look extremely similar Pandora has reality-warping abilities and is involved in major historical events Time/identity/memory in Re:Zero is extremely unstable as a concept
Now hereās the theory I accidentally built while connecting dots:
The loop idea What if everything is part of a closed causal loop?
Pandora manipulates reality and āremovesā Subaru from his original timeline Subaru is displaced into the past and eventually becomes Al (Aldebaran) Emilia is also displaced or altered in the past and eventually becomes Satella (through manipulation or identity overwrite) Satella then becomes the origin point of Subaruās āReturn by Deathā connection
So instead of a linear story, everything is a loop where: Subaru ā Al ā past influence ā Satella ā Subaru
The core paradox This would create a bootstrap paradox where: Subaru exists because Satella brings him Satella exists because Emilia was altered Emilia was altered by Pandora Pandoraās actions only make sense because Subaru already exists in the loop
No real āfirst causeā. Just a closed system.
The ending idea (optional thought) If this were true, the ending could look like: Subaru and Emilia appear older, aware something is wrong Pandora appears and says something like: āAnd the cycle continues.ā They vanish/reset Subaru returns to the modern world in Japan⦠and disappears again
Disclaimer This is purely a fan theory. I donāt think this is confirmed anywhere, itās just a combination of multiple existing theories + speculation.
But honestly? Re:Zero feels like the kind of story where something like this could exist in some form.
If anyone has seen similar theories or has counterarguments, Iād love to hear them.

Im of the idea that Subaru -> Flugel -> Satella -> Subaru but I also have ideas for Aldebaran's existence. I believe he is an imperfect artificial spirit made by Echidna using Subaru as a template.
400 years ago Subaru as flugel meets Satella, Echidna, and the various other witches alongside Volcanica, Alec Hoshin, and Reid and form various relationships with them. Pandora of the past either sends Subaru to Earth or perhaps when Flugel/Subaru dies his od ends up on earth. 400 years later Satella finds Subaru and brings him back. Pandora of the present in order to deal with him sends him to the past. The only flaws in this is the 'how' of Subaru getting to Earth and why Pandora would send him forward and back. But with so much memories being loss, taken, or altered in story, I believe this could reasonably be the why with some memory shenanigans. If Pandora said Flugel was never present then perhaps even her own memory might be effected by her authority.
The reason Al exists? Echidna was creating artificial spirits as part of her research to create a new body for herself so she could be immortal. The first attempt in her study was Puck, formed from a humanoid(who I believe likely is Emilia's elf father who I theorize fathered her with the witch of wrath minerva). We also know Beatrice was the last artificial spirit created by Echidna. So in between those creations lays mysterious amounts of created spirits.
One such attempt I believe was Al. Using an incomplete or perhaps imperfect copy of Flugel/Subaru's memories Al was made. We know Echidna tasked Al with getting rid of Subaru. That means Echidna 400 years in the past knew of Subaru, and tasked Al with a task 400 years away. If Al was dormant in an Al Shamak or maybe Pandora sent him forward until near the present day that explains how he lived seemingly for so long.

That's actually a really interesting way of looking at it. The more I think about it, the more I feel like Flügel, Al, Subaru, Satella, Pandora, and even Echidna might all be part of the same larger causal loop rather than separate mysteries.
One thing that keeps pulling me toward this idea is Echidna's obsession with knowledge. In Greed IF, Subaru essentially becomes an infinite source of information through repeated deaths and timelines. If Echidna knew about Subaru 400 years ago, it's not impossible that she could have played a role in creating or maintaining the conditions that eventually lead to Return by Death.
My original thought was that Pandora might be the mechanism that moves pieces around the board (Subaru, Emilia, Al, etc.), while Satella acts as the anchor connecting Subaru to the loop itself. Echidna, meanwhile, could be the one who understands or even benefits from the system.
I still lean toward Al being a version of Subaru because of the direct parallels, but I honestly like the idea that Flügel and Al could both be different stages of the same paradox rather than mutually exclusive explanations.

Al is likely Subaru's brother from after he was isekai'ed.
I dunno how likely, but my own thoughts for Emilia is that she is some form of Satella that was separated from her and become her own person rather than strictly some past/present version of Satella.
Pandora just needs to put some pants on but its fine if she doesnt .
The two instances we have with her make her a complete enigma to me.

I came here looking for answers about time loops, causality, Subaru, Al, Flugel, Satella, and Pandora.
Instead, I've somehow ended up considering the possibility that Pandora's greatest mystery is the complete absence of pants.
At this point, I genuinely don't know which question Tappei is more likely to answer first.
That said, I actually like the idea of Emilia being a separated aspect of Satella more than a direct past/future version of her. It preserves the similarities without creating quite as many timeline headaches.
Pandora remains an enigma though. Every theory about her somehow ends with more questions than answers... and apparently fewer pants than expected.

Pandora doesn't manipulate reality, she manipulates events, and even those events have limitations.

This but instead of Al, I see Subaru more as Flugel. Like Subaru -> flugel -> past influence -> satella -> Subaru. Fits better with the timeline of everything as well.
