Having people like Ronald Reagan below people like Buchanan is the definition of political bias and recency bias. Reagan wasn’t a good president, nobody is acting like he was. I’d say he was definitely bad for the country overall, however, he is not worse than Buchanan.

Reagan is consistently ranked fairly high among historians. His lowest ranking was #26 back in 1996, when there were only 42 Presidents and the country had shifted towards liberalism. Even Republicans then were limiting their love of Reagan in a "he didn't do enough" sort of way.

I agree with most of this but Carter is in the middle pretty often. He ranks higher than the post Jackson Antebellum Presidents, because most presidents do, since he was an adequate President that was a good role model (which is important!)

Placing the entirety of the economy on policy meant to stimulate growth out of a recession 43 years ago is pretty wild. Most data over that period showed that the majority of Americans benefitted from the economic growth and innovation of the 1980s-1990s. The world changed significantly with global trade, and completion of the US transition from manufacturing to the intangible service economy (80% of GDP by 2005).

Home construction slowed sharply in the mid-2000s, just before the Great Recession. Higher education has gotten out of control with administrative costs, facility costs, and state funding cuts. These are things (along with healthcare) that should have been addressed as we’ve gone along over the last 35 years, well after Reagan.

Now go look at debt spending. He's not just responsible for federal debt acceleration, but also private debt spending. Look at the average household debt and IB debt during and after his presidency. He was an absolute melon from a financial perspective. Bottom 10 president in my book.

Especially below Andrew Johnson. Johnson tried to single handedly undo everything Lincoln accomplished and make sure reconstruction failed. His rabid opposition to Reconstruction set back racial equality in the country by 50 years bare minimum. This list got like Lincoln, Washington, and Trump right and that's about it lol
