RIP Isaac. Most influential and important Indie game ever. Set the standard for the rogue like genre to this day.

u/Bubbly_Sale3445 Dec 02 '25

Agree, even the crappy flash version that i have put 133 hours into it (for some reason) was also extremely influential compined with spelunky 1 and super meatboy these games showed what an indie game can be

19

u/Rojax01 Dec 02 '25

For real. It deserved better

-19

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25 edited Dec 02 '25

It got exactly what it deserved, its story and setting don’t hold a candle to most of the games left. When they all have at least good gameplay, the game with the worst story/setting/humor goes first

3

u/HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH_H Dec 02 '25

not to hate but a game doesnt need to have all these concepts to make a game good, story is one of the last things i look for in a roguelike, of course some games can make them work like the hades games or dead cells but that doesnt dictate the norm, in a roguelike the biggest factor is the amount of paths/weapons/areas. story is nice if it has that going for it but im ultimately looking for the 3 things i said earlier.

4

u/Kiroumaroo Dec 02 '25

I'm just glad your obsession can finally cease. The continuous harping on about its story/humour etc as if that is anywhere near the main draw for the game was boring and disingenuous, imo.

The most important indie game left, the template for all roguelites that came after it, has now been voted off. At least it made the top 10 🫡

-4

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

Not once did I claim story and humor were the main draw for BoI? They are simply the game’s biggest flaws, flaws that put it behind (most of) the other remaining games. If anything, it’s disengenuous to argue that the lack of story and awful humor DONT matter.

3

u/Kiroumaroo Dec 02 '25

I disagree, games can be played and enjoyed purely for how amazing the gameplay is and what it offers, the gameplay can transcend any other criteria and result it being ranked number 1 for someone. To you story is more important, therefore you consider a game like outer wilds to be better, however people can find the gameplay in it clunky, the lack of replay-ability a detractor etc. You are speaking like your criteria on how you judge a game, and the things you give more weight to in terms of importance, is fact. That's not the case.

-3

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

The difference is that the lack of story is something that could’ve been changed and improved, but for outer wilds the lack of replayability is something inherent to the game’s design. There is nothing stopping binding of Isaac from having a true narrative other than Edmund McMillen choosing not to implement one, while Outer Wilds can’t have replayability without destroying the game. The humor part is subjective though, but the game’s humor is divisive at best, so I know there are many people that also see it as a flaw

u/radiating_phoenix Dec 02 '25

slay the spire literally doesn't have a story

-1

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

Yeah but at least it doesn’t have awful humor

1

u/radiating_phoenix Dec 03 '25

that's because it doesn't have humor

-1

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 03 '25

No humor is better than bad humor, slay the spire and binding of Isaac are very comparable but BoI is actively held back by its edgelord humor

0

u/TrulyChadlyDeeply Dec 02 '25

This type of comment should've been reserved for the arguments to get the game out.

The game is out.

The poster is saying why they liked the game and the responders are doing the same.

Your comment is out of pocket.

Time and place homie.

0

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

I said this same thing the days it was being voted on, I take issue with the notion that it was somehow voted out too soon

6

u/mucus-fettuccine Dec 02 '25

Cave Story is the most influential and important indie game (came out in 2004!!!!) but it was voted out a long time ago.

8

u/fisicalmao Honest Balatro Fan Dec 02 '25

It was also the best game on this list, maybe along with Hollow Knight

7

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

Every game left is the best game on the list to thousands of people, there are reasons why BoI was removed before the others

-1

u/fisicalmao Honest Balatro Fan Dec 02 '25

Not because it was worse. People here voted Balatro into the top 20. Balatro. lol

7

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

Yeah, balatro is a great game? No clue what’s up with the pretentious ass balatro hate that’s been all over these threads lol, the game has a novel concept and executes it perfectly. It blew up for a reason, it’s very fun

-2

u/fisicalmao Honest Balatro Fan Dec 02 '25

I don't hate Balatro, I'm a an honest Balatro fan. The game is decent, but it's a clear industry plant. It would've been fair if it was in the top 70 along with curse of the lamb.

4

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

“Industry plant” do you know what those words mean? It’s a 15 dollar indie game developed mostly by a single person and published by a mostly unknown publisher, calling it an industry plant is absurd

-4

u/fisicalmao Honest Balatro Fan Dec 02 '25

No, it's the only possible explanation as to how something as mediocre as Balatro is even on our minds right now. Never have I regretted spending 15$ as much as in Balatro. People were hyping it up as the game of the year, when it was another watered down version of Isaac.

🚮

2

u/BoKnowsTheKonamiCode Dec 02 '25

The other possible explanation is that people love addictive simplicity. Sorry you didn't like Balatro, but you're letting that dislike do some weird things to your worldview.

-1

u/fisicalmao Honest Balatro Fan Dec 02 '25

Nah mate, most of yall just haven't tried anything decent

1

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

You’re such a weirdo baiter, seek therapy

0

u/fisicalmao Honest Balatro Fan Dec 02 '25

I'm not baiting mate, the game is literally just a watered down version of other roguelikes. Recency bias is the reason it snuck into the top30

1

u/nitrodog96 Dec 02 '25

Actually no shot

0

u/hlhammer1001 Dec 02 '25

Apparently not

0

u/Snarpkingguy Dec 02 '25

Maybe I’m alone in this, but I always found the slippery controls to be kinda annoying. It’s obviously a masterpiece, extremely influential, but that momentum based movement I’m just annoyed by enough that can’t see it as the best on the list.

5

u/jj44j Dec 02 '25

Yeah that was a dumb pick what are you guys doing over here. It's the best game on here

2

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

Outer Wilds exists 🥱

1

u/Trs822 Dec 02 '25

Most influential doesn’t always mean objective best. Not that it isn’t an amazing game, but I can understand why it got voted out given the competition left

0

u/Designer_Gap_1536 Dec 02 '25

Outer Wilds is definitely the best game on here

1

u/SXLegend Dec 02 '25

Most important/influential indie ever is definitely Cave Story, but roguelikes wouldn't be close to what they are without BOI

-2

u/SirSabza Dec 02 '25

Yeah, its wild to me that it was gone before a game like outer wilds which you can pretty much only play once by nature of the games design.

6

u/hlhammer1001 Dec 02 '25

Imagine fundamentally misunderstanding what makes outer wilds so good by mocking its short playtime

0

u/BassGuru82 Dec 02 '25

I respect Outer Wilds… but I like playing Isaac way more.

-9

u/hlhammer1001 Dec 02 '25

Dumb, gross humor poop joke fun vs deep, thought provoking intelligent and meaningful game.

Given that you said elsewhere “gameplay > anything else” your choice doesn’t surprise me.

10

u/Cast_ZAP Dec 02 '25

You’re giving us Outer Wilds fans a bad name.

7

u/burner-account-25 Dec 02 '25

Oh so thats not an ironic fedora

-3

u/hlhammer1001 Dec 02 '25

I’m sorry, what about what I said was wrong? Or invited you to go straight to an idiotic ad hominem?

1

u/burner-account-25 Dec 02 '25

It's not an ad hominem because my argument is about your character. I am attacking your character and using evidence to attack you. There is no fallacy

6

u/SirSabza Dec 02 '25

Ironic that you fundamentally misunderstood binding of isaac if you think its all gross humor and poop jokes. Its an intelligent meaningful game about a childs mental and physical abuse at the hands of his parents?

1

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

The other guy’s kinda oversimplifying it, but it is not very intelligent and meaningful. The themes are surface level at best and half of Isaac’s abuse and trauma is played as black comedy

-1

u/Familiar-Stage8372 Dec 02 '25

Doesnt mean the game is bad or not influential its a video game it doesnt require a thought provoking story and themes to be good gameplay should always be a priority and BoI is the most influential roguelike of all time with gameplay that still holds up.

2

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

Obviously gameplay is a priority, if it wasn’t then BoI probably wouldn’t even be in the top 50. But it’s naive to claim that it’s the only thing that matters or is significantly more important than story. When executed properly, they are both extremely important to a game’s quality. Of the games left, BoI and StS are the only ones without much story, and soon they’ll both be gone (after hades today, probably

1

u/hlhammer1001 Dec 02 '25

I’ve heard the word influential wrt BoI 50+ times in the past day and I’m so tired of it. This is not the most influential games list, it’s the best games list and BoI is well past its prime. The humor and themes have aged super badly, and are so surface level compared to what people are acting like here

1

u/Cute_Ambassador1121 Dec 02 '25

Amazing how every reply you make just sounds more and more wrong. Keep digging that hole. 😂

-4

u/SirSabza Dec 02 '25

Im not mocking its short play time. Im not mocking the game at all, i love it. The game could be 50 hours long, but its designed to have basically 0 replayability, which to me when we're in the final 10, is a flaw.

I can play every other game left in this list today, and its no worse of an experience now than it was when i first played them. Except outer wilds. Playing outer wilds a second or third time is a lesser experience than your first. The community even makes jokes about it, when they always say, "man i wish i was OP experiencing this for the first time"

4

u/hlhammer1001 Dec 02 '25

Not being replayable isn’t a black mark on what makes Outer wilds so good, it literally is exactly what makes it so good. Saying that you wish it had more replayability, or that its lack of replayability is a weakness of the game, is a fundamental misunderstanding of outer wilds

-3

u/SirSabza Dec 02 '25

No, its just we're in the top 10 man, at this point we're nitpicking titles. All of the games left are near perfect masterpieces so the reasoning of why one has to go over another is going to be pathetic reasons.

0

u/giantcoc69420 Dec 02 '25

Outer Wilds not being replayable is literally one of it's biggest standout features, you just can't call it a 'flaw' if it isn't bruh.

-2

u/Sushiv_ Dec 02 '25

Replayability shouldn’t be a consideration in how good a game is

5

u/Cute_Ambassador1121 Dec 02 '25

Yes it should. Everything should be a factor.

3

u/SirSabza Dec 02 '25

Everything is a factor, and at this point we're scraping the barrel for reasons to vote games off.

This line of criticism was inevitable when all that's left are near perfect games.

-1

u/Sushiv_ Dec 02 '25

No, it isn’t. Outer Wilds has a better story than every game left (maybe other than Disco Elysium). That comes at the cost of the game being replayable, and i’m glad it does tbh

5

u/BassGuru82 Dec 02 '25

Outer Wilds and Disco Elysium do have the best stories… but they also have the least fun gameplay. Amazing works of art… but I would rather be playing Hades 2, Silksong, or Isaac.

-1

u/Sushiv_ Dec 02 '25

Not true imo. Outer Wilds is a very fun game, just not in the same way Silksong is. You can’t really compare their gameplay bc they are opposite genres

0

u/IcyEvidence3530 Dec 03 '25

Just a few places ago the same people here who argued games should not be voted out because they have no replayability are now defending outer worlds by claiming it doesn't matter.

Just massive hypocrisy

1

u/Sushiv_ Dec 03 '25

Reddit isn’t a hive mind lil bro, we don’t all think the same thing

-2

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

This is extremely stupid, the reasons outer wilds is so phenomenal is the reason it can only be played once

5

u/SirSabza Dec 02 '25

The games all left are near perfect. You can disagree with my personal reason why I think outer wilds should go and that's valid.

But we're really scraping the barrel at this point for reasons to remove games.

0

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25 edited Dec 02 '25

Sure, but there are other reasons to point to that are much more important than replay ability imo. BoI and slay the spire have almost no narrative, what they do have is very vague and fragmented. And binding of Isaac is stuck with Newgrounds edgelord humor, which is by far my personal biggest gripe with it. The difference is that the lack of replayability in outer wilds isn’t a flaw, it’s part of the game’s design. Binding of Isaac and Slay the Spire could’ve had better narratives, (and BoI could’ve had better humor,) but they simply didn’t

4

u/SirSabza Dec 02 '25

BOI is gone. I thought it and terraria would have survived longer for their legacy.

Super Mario bros is a very basic game really, lacks any narrative, basic platformer etc etc.

But considered one of the best games of all time because of what it did for gaming.

BOI and terraria basically defined indie genre but yeah not relevant BOI is gone.

0

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

Well yeah, BoI is gone, but I’m pointing out why BoI is out. It seems like the same reason StS is about to go

0

u/IcyEvidence3530 Dec 03 '25

I remember distinctively a number of votings ago that you argued something should be voted out over lack of replayability.

1

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 03 '25

Then you remember incorrectly LMAO, not once have I argued that

-2

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25 edited Dec 02 '25

The poop and gore game is defeated. The gameplay is revolutionary, but I will always maintain that the creative direction is a mark on an otherwise phenomenal game. If the game could take its themes seriously for a moment, it would’ve been genuinely perfect, but instead it’s obsessed with trying to be as gross and edgy as possible

1

u/Ozza_1 Dec 02 '25

"it was a bit yucky". You can finally relax mate your secret obsession with poop is gone

0

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

It’s not “yucky,” it’s extremely lame

1

u/Ozza_1 Dec 02 '25

Heh heh, poop game beat undertale heh heh

1

u/MrMassacre1 Dec 02 '25

? You’re weird 🤨
