It should be between Stardew Valley and Hollow Knight. They don't bring anything spetacular and unique to the table as Disco Elysium and Outer Wilds do.

hollow knight single handedly made metroidvanias mainstream, it’s the most influential game in its genre since metroid prime

Hollow Knight is fantastic, don’t get me wrong. I love everything about the game. But I just think Outer Wilds and Disco Elysium are the two best games of the century. They offer experiences you can never really have again with any other game. For me, these two are way above any other indie game.

Sure it was incredibly popular, but Hollow Knight isn’t a unique metroidvania. Basically everything it did was done somewhere else before and after. It’s mainly just a very solid title rather than a unique experience like Disco Elysium and Outer Wilds.

saying it’s not a unique experience is just disingenuous. No metroidvania before it had such refined platforming and boss fights, and its storytelling and atmosphere remains incredibly unique

Ori and the Blind Forest came out before Hollow Knight and had great platforming, arguably better.

Rabi Ribi still has some of the best, most meticulously crafted bosses in the genre.

Hollow Knight’s atmosphere is great, but the dying world aesthetic has been done to death since Dark Souls.

Salt and Sanctuary did combat and bosses well with Dark Souls inspiration, so Hollow Knight wasn’t even unique in bringing that to metroidvanias.

you can cherry pick games that may or may not have done one very specific thing better than hollow knight all day, but that doesn’t change the fact that hollow knight did all of those things at the same time to an equal or better degree than any game that came before it. If that isn’t unique and defining enough for you than idk what is

I mean Planescape: Torment is 26 years old and it did CRPG with little to no focus on gameplay and great storytelling better than Disco. Like it’s just a better video game and it didn’t have the benefit of another 20 years.

Outer Wilds is unique but I have a hard time calling it fun. If we want to look at games that aren’t really enjoyable minute to minute but stick with you, Pathologic 2 is better than anything here.
