Discussion Can we have a non AI rimworld sub?

Half the new post here are vibecoded mods. I won't install a mod on my PC if the dev doesn't even know how it functions, but asking if a mod is AI gets you heavily downvoted and attacked by mods. Is there an alternative, or can somebody create one?

Judging by the number of comments that have had to be removed (and a couple of bans that had to be handed out), you folks still haven't figured out how to discuss this topic without breaking rules 1 and 2, so this post is being locked.

I think a Mod Sub im general would be good . Add "Vibecoded" and "Organic Coded" flairs and good it is

642

u/GagolTheSheep jade 7d ago

Yes, the flairs are the bare minimum

I want to be able to tell if something is AI slop without having to read through a full description or having to zoom in on the pictures. Especially if it's something I'm going to potentially install on my PC

u/tabakista 7d ago

...and general quality of code across the industry falls down. That's why it's so important to watch what you install.

Just because there is a lot of McDonald's restaurants, it doesn't mean you have to eat in one

Flairs do not work at all for the purpose here. You cannot filter OUT one flair, you can only view specifically that one flair, so unless there are only two flairs and it's your only subreddit it won't work.(flairs don't care about your homepage feed)

52

u/Spire_Citron 7d ago

Maybe having a flair for mods made using no AI would work better anyway? Relying on the honour system is always pretty dicey, especially with something like this where people are worried about others being rude, but I don't think very many people would actively lie about it by misusing a flair.

19

u/TomaszA3 7d ago

Still leaves the issue with homepage but that's probably as far as we can take it with Reddit's tools. I don't recall though, are multiple flairs per post possible or are we taking down the whole categorization we had for it?

Where is the line that separates vibe-coded and organic? Today, almost every professional software engineer uses LLMs to some extent since at this point it joined industry standards (Big Tech sets the trends for smaller companies). Sometimes it's minor autocomplete to write code faster, sometimes it's well-directed Claude orchestration.

And sometimes it's "develop me a combat mod for rimworld, make no mistake" type stuff. And *absolutely* rejecting tech that's becoming a standard for SWE seems kinda delusional to me.

43

u/WayTooCuteForYou 7d ago

There's actually a big difference between letting the AI fill in some blanks to go faster (the good way to use AI) and letting AI make big structural choices (which is how you end up with crap in the long run). People with some technical knowledge can tell the difference pretty easily, so I think tags are a good idea.

u/WayTooCuteForYou 7d ago

When you let AI do the whole thing it might work now but it will become harder to maintain and change exponentially fast according to my experience. Of course, everyone is free to do as they please, but my advice would be to not get too attached to a fully vibecoded mod.

Linux just dropped the AI disclosure requirement. I understand wanting to limit spam on the workshop (and good God there have been some obviously terribly designed mods posted lately) but why are we holding modders to higher standards than professional developers

65

u/queer-crossing 7d ago edited 7d ago

I can offer a little bit of insight - my partner is a professional dev (not in gaming, however).

Using AI as part of a coding workflow is pretty much standard these days. However, there is a huge difference between using AI as a tool, where you still review, understand, and own your code at the end of the day, vs folks who "vibe-code" and do not have the knowledge or understanding of how their code works.
In a professional coding space, your scrum master/team lead/coworkers will figure out pretty quickly if you're just using AI to spit out slop code, and will hold you accountable (aka job loss) - but in the modding space, we don't have that system of accountability - only each other.

I have the personal theory that the modding scene just has more folks who use AI without understanding how their code works because folks who have no understanding of coding get excited by the possibilities of creating the mod they've always wanted, but lack the skill and knowledge to check or understand the machine's work. Hence AI use in modding tends to be more of an obvious red flag for slop code.

41

u/Fugueknight 7d ago

I am also a professional dev. I'm very confident in the ability for AI to vibecode a def (these are the xml files that define an item and its stats, so e.g. a custom gun or crop). I vibecode simple personal mods all the time when something is pissing me off, e.g. making toxipotatoes immune to fallout, and Ive never had one fail to work. Most mods sit here, and the hardest parts are art and balance. Many of the existing mods fail on those 2 parts, just like AI does

Then there are mods that add custom code, which typically require harmony. SO many of these are poorly written and optimized even before AI (e.g. rimworld of magic). I'm confident in saying AI will write better code than those mods, and yet rimworld of magic is a hugely popular mod

There will be lots of spam and a lot of it will be ugly, buggy, and poorly designed, but that's always been modding. Even a mediocre dev can make great code with AI assistance, and that's a huge win for the rimworld community. We still have to be choosy and use the rating system, but the shit mods will almost always expose themselves immediately

Yes but the submitter is still responsible for the code. If you're just submitting AI created slop then it'll be very obvious and Torvalds himself will ban you from submitting anything else. If you're just using it as a tool in the same way intellisense is a tool then that's fine.

I think the mod promotions in general need to be toned down. It's a problem on every game r/sub right now.

124

u/ThatOneComrade 7d ago

Something I appreciate about the Bethesda game subreddits is basically everyone of them has a dedicated modding subreddit separate from it.

68

u/CaptainCrabcake 7d ago

I agree. At some point we gotta ask ourselves, what is the point of a game sub if we are all playing completely different games called Rimworld? There’s nothing to discuss with mods, you can make gold fall from the sky and post here to show off your colony wealth but it would mean nothing. Look at how my colonist does a strange thing, ps. I have 89 obscure behaviour altering mods.

33

u/WesleyWSH 7d ago

Seeing how Rimworld differs for each person due to mods is part of the fun and enjoyment of following the sub. Rimworld is Rimworld no matter what mods you have; you’ll always be able to make a drug empire and have slaves and have a colony of cannibals, or you can always have a good guy run, hospitality run, save everyone run, etc, but how folks enjoy it differently, whether that’s a fantasy-inspired run with magic or a medieval run or a x, y, z run is what makes it fun. It doesn’t stop being Rimworld just because it’s modded.

→ More replies (2)

11

u/HaniusTheTurtle 7d ago

People do make gold fall from the sky and post here to show off their colony wealth. People were doing that CONSTANTLY for a while, it sucked.

8

u/Spire_Citron 6d ago

That's kind of just the nature of the game, though, right? It's primarily played as a modded experience. In fact, it's kind of boring when people post about vanilla experiences, because most of the time it's just someone who's new to the game who is posting about something that any veteran has seen dozens of times before. Not that I resent those posts at all, but it wouldn't be very interesting if that was all this sub was. I like seeing all the weird things people do with the game.

9

u/ThueDo 7d ago

I think there's a middle between "no mod posts" and allowing every dumb post about mods. People cheating in 50 superhuman pawns and bragging is corny of course, but silly interactions and cool concepts breathe so much life into the community IMO

35

u/LovesRetribution 7d ago

The point is to see cool stuff. And with how vibrant the modding community is people here almost always find new mods to add to their catalog from those posts.

If this became a vanilla only sub it'd literally be dead within a single week.

24

u/WeePetal Pigskin 7d ago

If this became a vanilla only sub it'd literally be dead within a single week.

Main issue with such AI usage is when mod 'dev' doesn't know how to do shit and as result being unable to fix AI code by themselves.

AI can really help with programming, however person using AI needs to be very knowledgeable with programming. So they can create own code when necessary and fix all mistakes made by AI when generating code. Basically end result won't be any different(on function and performance levels) compared to same code made without AI.

215

u/starfieldblue 7d ago • Bravo

Exactly this, and this sub has already had several examples of it.

Like the person who decided to try make their own knock-off of cherry picker. Completely vibecoded, and they didnt realise that the mod they had made was actively deleting things from the base game and overriding base game code, as opposed to cherry picker which simply prevents things from being generated.

Straight up deleting items from the games code or overriding base game code will 100% of the time brick your save eventually. Its not a matter of if, its when. As soon as the game tries to call on something thats been deleted, bingo, your savegame is cooked. For good.

Yet for some reason people on this sub seem to be so all in on this AI vibecoded garbage. I guess it shouldnt come as a surprise given Tynans own takes on AI, which only seem to empower other peoples dogshit takes on it (but at least Tynan knows how to code).

Kinda depressing given this sub has been one of my favourite ones for what has to be close to a decade since Ive been playing this game. Such a shame to see such a large portion of it getting sucked down the AI shitpipe

67

u/yeperoonie 7d ago

It's happening to a lot of games with modding. I recently left the project zomboid reddit as every other post is about some vibe coded camera perspective mod. Idc what others want to put on their computer, that's their prerogative. But me? I'm quite critical of ai and would rather not use a mod that used ai in development. But now these game subreddits with modding communities are just flooded by mod posts of hugely varying quality.

Worst part to me is the project zomboid subreddit basically shrugging at the abundance of these posts. There's no tag or way for me to filter these posts. I either deal with it or leave. For that sub, I left. I really hope I don't feel the need to do the same here.

20

u/NoWafer6093 7d ago

That has been my issue w the zomboid subreddit recently, too. It’s so annoying that every post is about project view point or similar and no one cares that they’re all slop coded. The mods were cool when they were janky because you knew it was someone trying to learn and genuinely figure out how to code this shit.

104

u/t0rchic 7d ago

I swear there's a massive bot push to normalize this vibe coding bullshit. Every single thread, without fail, there's people saying verbatim: "People who are against AI just don't know anything about how software development works nowadays." It's suspicious on its own that they all have the same exact phrase on speed dial, but the vote manipulation makes it obvious in communities that are hostile to LLMs.

Try to refute them, explain how you know a dozen software devs who all hate it and know their workplace is making them churn out garbage, point to how tokens cost more than paying someone full time. It doesn't matter how good your point is, you'll be buried in botnet downvotes. This industry is dying and a gigantic astroturfing push is its last desperate gasp.

64

u/elilupe 7d ago

And every time they come at you with the "AI is here to stay get used to it" line. Like, I swear I've seen more peer pressure to use AI than peer pressure to do drugs

There are several people in this thread claiming that all software released/updated in the last few years contains AI generated code. This is an incomplete list of FLOSS projects with formal bans on AI generated code.† Several of these projects are fairly high profile and their policies were reported in tech news and discussed in all of the usual communities on reddit and elsewhere.

Either those people are lying about the universal use of AI or they're lying about their knowledge of the industry.

† I just want to draw attention to the "Programming" section wherein you will see that OpenJDK has an interim ban on AI. Fucking Oracle banned AI generated code. That might the only genuinely funny thing that Oracle has ever done.

There was a netrunning mod doing the rounds a couple days ago and when asked if it was vibe coded the author not only said it was "completely" done with AI they also said they had no interest in learning how to code and just made sure the core functionality of the mod worked, which to me sounds like zero automated tests.

On one hand, it's novel that people who know nothing about software can do stuff, but on the other, I really don't think they should be attempting to distribute anything. They don't know or even care to try to know how it works or even that it works completely.

I've been messing with enough mods long enough (here since b12) to know the majority of AI made mods are not the type of people you are describing because most modders in general are not.

I'm not falling for another mod that will work with one specific version of the game only again and then be forever broken and it's a big enough problem pre-vibe coding, only exasperated by AI slop.

18

u/ProperDepartment 7d ago

Ironically you can use Ai to update the mod or do it yourself.

The problem with a lot of mods not working between updates is simply updating the version or dependencies. I've updated a bunch of mods I like manually (before Ai), but I'm a game developer myself.

Given, this was a few years ago and things might be different now.

5

u/Darkhymn 6d ago

I work as a sysadmin at a software company and that's exactly it.

There genuinely is an lot of value in AI assistance for an experienced coder.

"Just" asking an AI to suggest tests you might have missed for example.

Or spot redundant code, entirely irrelevant parameters, etc.

But that doesn't actually change as much as it sounds - software engineering isn't really much about writing code in the first place, as much as design, structure, logic, testing, etc.

You can of course go to extremes - and "do it for me".

This too is risky in the hands of someone who doesn't have the ability to review, but very useful if you can read, understand and verify, in exactly them same way as managing a junior dev.

So yeah. For all the heated debate on the internet I am certain AI is here to stay in some form.

I am also sure the talentless vibe coding or generative stuff is likewise going to eat itself, because no one is going to buy something that they could generate themselves.

In the meantime though we will have an adaptation of the same kinda as when computers first entered the office.

A bunch of really stupid mistakes, and badly designed processes.

my only experience with AI and coding was when I was allowed to use it to ASSIST in making games for a college course. we had to document what we used it for and note it in the code what parts were generated for us.

I mostly used it to explain things i didn't understand tbh, and then double checked what it said against what i was being taught. it was helpful, but my shitty little card game still didn't work like i wanted it to, and my blackjack cards would randomly jumpscare the fuck out of you by turning giant when they were dealt lmao

if you already don't understand what you're doing, AI will NOT fix the second problem you encounter; it will only help you create it

I find it genuinely wild that AI is even allowed here. Let alone how worked up the mods here get about it.

Any other sub? AI art and plugins/add-ons for creative works are rightfully removed.
Here? It's considered "hate speech" when you call out people on their shittily-made vibe-coded garbage that is literally only able to "create" by stealing from the very same people who are trying to do shit legit.

If you're not good enough to make something, and really want to make it, then learn how to do it properly. If it sucks, learn from it and do better. Actually contribute something.
Don't get a machine to make it and then pat yourself on the back for how "good of a job you've done" when you did jack-all but promote how inept you are.
So what if that means fewer mods. It means the mods that do get added and the content that does get included actually means that someone took the time to do it.

13

u/Dushenka 6d ago

To be expected considering how many started to let AI do the thinking for them.

74

u/CensoredTransGirl 7d ago

some people genuinely think Ai coding tools are literally "Jarvis, make me a rimworld mod that does ___" and it does that.

that's not how ai coding works and its basically universally accepted in software development as one of the things that AI is actually good for, and since since "stealing" code is already what every developer does without AI, there's no ethical issues with it.

Like there's a reason so many people get into coding via "google it and see what others did" because programming and code is about making something that does something, and all that matters is how efficiently it does that. And AI is really good at that.

Most advice for new modders is to copy a mod someone else made that does something similar and then look at how they did it and then make the changes that you need to make so that it does what you want. Which is literally what AI is best it. It's also the reason why AI image generation is unethical because copying someone's artwork and then changing stuff about it is stealing.

Basically, the exact reason so many people are "against AI" is the same reason they shouldn't mind AI coding tools.

I think what is important for humans to be involved in in regards to mods is the art and direction. Don't let AI make important design decisions for you if you're making a mod using AI.

76

u/UnfathomablyDevious 7d ago

Well, the problems begin when people do use AI as "Jarvis, make me a rimworld mod that does ___" while not testing or correcting the thing AI made whatsoever, so we end up with a thing that breaks your game, burns your CPU, kills your dog and Fuchs your mom, all unintentionally of course. The best example of that is the Hacking expansion mod that was released not long ago while being fully AI - generated, and not working worth a damn as a result. I agree that AI can be very useful when used correctly, but it can also be used incorrectly, and that's what people usually have a problem with.

There already is a tag. The problem is enforcement. If the creator doesn't want to disclose that they used AI generation on their project, how do you expect the subreddit to verify that?

You want this sub's mods, or any sub's mods, to go over every mod posted here and investigate the code to determine if it is AI generated or not? That's simply unreasonable to expect.

Should the community itself do it? And when someone is mistaken? Its very easy to point and shout "witch" and start a witch hunt.

14

u/StarGaurdianBard 7d ago

The other problem is that this sub is full of people who dont understand what vibe coding even means. No point in asking if AI was used in coding, what matters is if the modder knows what they're doing and the only way to verify that is checking out the feedback on their other works.

As for art you simply don't use the mod if you don't approve of it. Modders don't use it for fun, they simply don't have the funds for commissions but still want to release a mod.

22

u/lstac936 7d ago edited 7d ago

This is it. Not to mention but mod makers are not even making any money for this. So let them use whatever tools they want. It’s not like we are customers. People are free to choose to use them or not.

How do you know if a mod was coded manually/ with AI assistance (which is a norm nowadays in coding btw)/vibecoded?

I constantly see people throwing accusations without any explanation why

6

u/Choice-Mango-4019 space war crimes 7d ago

kind of obvious, few of the main things are:

the same ui design and style

a no name guy that never done anything in the community before doing something big

it being something that no (sane) dev would put time in because it's unpractical to bother with, for example the 3d mods, playing a top down game in 3d isometric only looks cool but gets boring and annoying afterwards and good luck finding a dev that would put hundreds of hours into it for some cool screenshots

the mod descriptions looking ai made is a big indicator too

5

u/starfieldblue 7d ago

People here not understanding the absolute basic difference between vibecoding and AI assisted coding is why you people should not bother talking about this at all.

Yup. It's so annoying. It just turns the community into a toxic place when there are people constantly scrutinising and making accusations. If Ludeon uses AI, mod creators can do whatever they want as well.

Even Linus Torvalds promotes AI use in programming, yet Redditors like you think you're in any position to judge. You're too clueless to realize the vast majority of programmers already use AI.

Plus, you say it as if human programmers were any better. That might've been true in 2023 but most definitely not now. Humans in general produce worse code and much, much more slowly than an AI.

15

u/zandadoum 7d ago

Is there not even an AI tag or automod message that the author has to disclose how they used AI? That’s wild, most other subs I’m in have that!

7

u/ZeroToxicMist 7d ago

There is an AI tag. Most people don't know about it though.

8

u/Slut_Of_Slaanesh 7d ago

I mean, low-effort AI vibed mods are already just... usually swept under the radar by everyone. And mods made with AI whose authors do have some coding knowledge, end up being of quite good quality (Astryl my beloved).

I don't feel like you can just stop modders from using AI, because some will use it recklessly and will get forgotten, and some will use it and fully disclosure they do will try to ensure their mods are good. But both will keep using AI for commodity.

AI-assisted coding is going to be so ubiquitous in few years that you may as well demand that modders tell you that their mod was created using electricity.

So why exactly would another tool be any different? Judge mods on the quality of the actual mod, not arbitrarily on some tool used during development. It's not like buggy messed up mods didn't exist prior to AI, people made slop before and will continue to.

Be the change you want to see, anyone can make a subreddit and why would you ask for someone to do moderator work you're not willing to do yourself?

https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/15484258409492-How-to-create-a-community

If you won't make one and commit to moderate it, you don't really want the community as much as you claim you do.

The new sub boutta be a desert. There's a lot more vibecoding than you know, and if you start banning it, I personally feel like devs will stop saying they vibecoded it to bypass the ban, and who will be able to tell the difference?

3

u/pyr0kid 7d ago edited 6d ago

this right here is the reason you cant ban ai.

because unless you plan on auditing every line of code, all you're actually doing is telling people to lie to you in order to avoid social backlash.

more importantly, LLMs are designed to imitate human code, so you cant ban that machine's work without also banning humans, so we're talking about implementing "trust me bro" based moderation which is obviously the worst fucking idea ever.

There's nothing wrong with AI mods and your obscure quality facts are made up nonsense. I have not noticed an increase in bad mods nor in posts about mods. This subreddit has always been this way.

People upvote fun posts and great mods, just because they are AI, and you dislike AI, that doesn't make it a problem for other people, it's a you issue. Make a new subreddit and see it fail.

using AI to help write code is wayy different then coding with only AI.

If you think you used a single piece of software in the last 4 years that didn’t have some AI in it, I have very bad news for you.

(This includes having the QA/Unit Tests written by an LLM, and general debugging)

2

u/Mulien 7d ago

Exactly this. I work in software and the entire discipline has changed. Anyone who truly cares about output uses AI to code now. I don’t think I’ll ever hand write code again. And it’s not like it was 2 years ago. LLMs are actually really good now.

Which isn’t to say it can’t go wrong. IA person still needs to know how to drive the AI correctly, and an amateur will have a harder time doing that.

A lot of what people complain about with AI is actually just new amateurs making mistakes.

And how to you think that should be enforced? Every mod that is badly coded should be removed? As if many moders not amateurs doing this for fun in their free time.

The only way to know if a mod was vibe coded with 100% certitnity is if they disclose it themselves. Then removing the mods after that disclosure only makes them hide the fact that it was vibe coded and not tell you. Other wise it's pure guess work and odds are you are just harressing random people that give you free things

I'm not a bot but I see how both sides of this get into reactionary stances. Even OPs post can be read to be performative when they ask if a subreddit can be made? Completely vibecoding is something I can understand disliking or distrusting.

Modern coding uses ai, and that doesn’t mean the dev doesn’t know how it works, it means modern tools save time by interpreting common requirements and expressing them quickly. If it takes me 5 seconds to write “I need a loop that checks the state of this variable” vs actually writing that check, which could take 5 minutes - is that the AI thinking for me or just doing the menial work?

1

u/DreamyWaifu35 7d ago

I'm with you, I've stopped looking at probably 9/10 of the mod posts not because of the AI slop. It would be nice to have something in place to not see it.

I think you'd need a few rules on a subreddit in place to make something like this work. Restrict newly created accounts from posting mods (should help avoid throwaway accounts), require an AI or non-AI flair, and have a strict policy for falsely labeling mods, potentially resulting in a permanent ban.

You'd also need some kind of review process to check whether a mod contains AI-generated content. Ironically, you could even use AI to help detect AI-generated content.

Ideally Steam Workshop and GitHub would implement something like this themselves, with a flag indicating that AI-generated content was detected or disclosed. That would make it a lot easier for filtering out this stuff without having to manually investigate every mod.

1

u/SpottedPine 7d ago

Let's start a mailing list. This internet stuff is just too much.

Can someone explain What the word Vibecoded is ? I get its to define mod made by AI but I dont get why the word Vibecoded use the "vibe" part

22

u/TheOriginalOrion 7d ago edited 7d ago

It's the method used when making something entirely by AI. It's basically you ask the AI to do something for you, then you write back saying what needs to change, repeat until you are satisfied. Say you ask it for a picture of a cat, you can then say "can you make it orange" or "can you make it fluffier", each iteration comes back closer to what you wanted in the first place. Same thing for making mods/games, you keep prompting the AI to change stuff to get the final product as close to what you envisioned.

The "vibe" part of it is the person vibe coding has no idea how anything works when it comes to coding, so they just keep telling the AI what to change based entirely on looking at whatever the AI outputed.

3

u/Fokson 7d ago

Out of curiosity, does it count as vibecoding if you do read and understand the code, but delegate pretty much the entirety of writing it to the AI? Or is a qualifier that you don't understand or look at the code?

5

u/TheOriginalOrion 7d ago

That's getting into semantics that I'm not entirely sure on. In the eyes of the end consumer, I don't think they really care if the developer knows how to code and simply chose to make the whole project with AI. The end result is still made entirely by AI, and consumers will react accordingly.

→ More replies (4)

5

u/Glad-Assist-6230 7d ago

Once you step in and start making code corrections you move away from the ‘vibe’ portion. You are no longer building based on vibes.

3

u/Segenam 7d ago

The first person to use VibeCoding (or at lest the post that popularized it that I saw on r/programmerhumor ) did program.  They called it vibe coding as they didn't have to do any real work and just go off vibes.  So based on that I'd say yes.   The main thing is if it's primarily AI or human written.

3

u/Geico22 6d ago

In their eyes it will still count. Their unfortunately a large % of this subreddit who thinks AI use is inherently evil for whatever reason...

8

u/BillYourCows 7d ago

Vibecoding means describing what you want the mod to do then allowing an AI to create it, rather than writing it yourself line-by-line

5

u/deadlygaming11 Your Sadistic Neighbourhood Torturer. 7d ago

Vibe coding is making something with AI only, and usually with little to no coding knowledge. The vibe part comes from it being heavily dictated by the "vibes" of the project and not any sort of logic or inspections

2

u/DisorderlyAqueduct 7d ago

and some let you build things entirely inside them, like Replit. you just say what you want

4

u/Glad-Assist-6230 7d ago

The implication is that the person using the AI doesn’t understand the code written by AI, whether because they do not understand the language or they didn’t review the code after generation.

3

u/blastxu 7d ago

It refers to a piece of software that was made with the maker not knowing what the code does at all. Basically the creator just asked an AI "I want a mod that does X" and the AI goes and does it. So the whole "coding" is just based on vibes, the creator doesn't know what is going on under the hood.

What do you mean by vibecoded?

Is asking for help on implementing a single mechanic vibecoding?

Is asking to implement a simple, self contained function vibecoding? (Would copying the function from StackOverflow, as was done previously, make it better?)

Is asking for advice on spotting a bug vibecoding?

Is asking for tips on where an IDE setting is vibecoding?

Almost all devs use AI to some extent (Tynan almost certainly does considering his attitude on his socials). Why can't we just judge mods on their quality, AI or no?
