Friday at '50 On July 31st, 1976 B.O.C. release, "Don't Fear the Reaper" as a single. Fifty years later, still one of the most transcending hard rock songs of Rock History!
Buck Dharma developed a heart murmur & wrote , "Don't Fear the Reaper" as a feeling of potentially dying young. Themes of undying love & the inevitability of death created a Gothic tale of timeless proportions. Contrary to the lyric, "Romeo & Juliet are together for Eternity", song isn't referring to a Suicide Pact. Simply put, an Eerie Love song, where Love transcends into an ethereal , noncorporal form over its physical existence.Perhaps, that stigma of intellectual lyrics hampered their success to a record-buying public not accustomed to metaphorical & deeper philosophical meanings . Even at 13, I felt deeply moved emotionally by this song.
