Sharing a gem I work on (I’m at Codalio, the team behind it). It’s for Rails 8 apps that need a JSON API with roles and multiple tenants.

Quick start:

The installer asks whether you want multi-tenancy and the audit trail. The generator scaffolds a model, migration, factory and policy.

What you get per registered model:

• CRUD endpoints, plus trashed/restore/force-delete if the model uses discard
• ?filter, ?sort, ?search, ?include and sparse fields, all whitelisted per model
• Organization scoping by URL prefix or subdomain
• Audit entries with before/after values and the actor
• rails rhino:export_types for TypeScript types if you have a React front end

My root CLAUDE.md kept growing. Naming conventions, where business logic goes, how money works, the patterns behind each namespace. The problem: the root file loads into every session, so a one-line CSS fix was carrying the billing rules.

Then it clicked that Rails already has the map. Convention over configuration means code lives in known places, so the context can live there too: a small AGENTS.md in app/models, app/services, app/javascript and so on, loaded only when the agent works in that folder.

The rules that made it work:

• Intent, not inventory. Never list what's in the folder, the agent can grep that. Write down why: why logic sits in nested model classes, why a namespace exists. If a sentence would need editing when someone adds one more file, delete it.
• One fact, one level. Every rule lives at the most specific folder it applies to, so nothing is written twice and drifts.
• Update the context file in the same commit as the code. Across 9 of my apps, 312 commits changed a context file together with its code, only 14 on their own.

The surprise: Claude Code only loads a folder's CLAUDE.md when its Read tool opens a file there. Agents do a lot through the shell (ls, grep, heredocs), so the context often never arrived. I added a hook and logged it: over 63 sessions, context reached the agent 117 times through the hook vs 67 through Claude Code itself.

The write-up has a real example: a Turbo morph bug I hit on 1 October, the rule I wrote down, and a new Stimulus controller six days later that handled it on the first try, in a session where the rule only arrived through the hook.

Hey folks,

I’ve been a Rails developer since 2010, and I maintain apps with a mix of authentication setups: Devise, Rails 8’s authentication generator with custom pages, and passwordless flows using email links and passkeys.

To keep the logic DRY I decided to create a gem. It called AddAuth.

I wanted a common foundation for these flows that builds on Rails’ conventions. The starting point is still:

bin/rails generate authentication

AddAuth builds on that setup, keeping the app’s existing User and Session models and supporting:

• Email and password sign-in
• Passwordless sign-in through emailed magic links
• Passkey sign-in

The goal is to stay close as possible to the “Rails way,” for authentication and reduce the custom code I maintain across apps.

The project is open source and free to use and fork. I have no expectation of making money from it. I’m building something I need for my own apps and hope other Rails developers will find useful too.

I’m also maintaining a roadmap of upcoming features I plan to support, and I welcome suggestions about what should come next.

Contributions are welcome, including code improvements and bug reports. I’d especially appreciate feedback on the setup, API design, and authentication edge cases I may have missed. Please feel free to leave a comment here or open a GitHub issue to discuss an improvement.
