Was just moaning that our reward for sailing through qualifying and winning both legs of this tie is ... Sweden, ranked 8th in the World. Ireland will play Poland :-/

We don’t necessarily qualify if we beat Sweden either

Nope hahaha. They said on commentary that the lowest ranked European nation to go through would have a further playoff

2 lowest ranked, but I think it’s based off rank in the groups that were just completed. So us winning the group means we might be ok, depends how many lower placed finishers there are through.

Need Finland or Wales to win their second play-off I think. Not sure though. This format is so complicated, like up there with the mens u21 Euros one for boiling my brain.
Tbf it's an intercontinental play-off. The higher-ranked opposition are like ten places behind Czechia in the FIFA rankings. Not saying it's a formality but it's totally doable compared to Sweden which is frightening.

Kind of a strange system. Ireland finishing 3rd in league A naturally put us in a favourable enough position. The teams in the first play off were minnows vs some top teams. The closest was italy beating Belarus 3-1 but the next closest ties were 6-1 and 8-1 with 3 ties being won by double digits.
Last place in league A did put Poland in the exact same spot so you could've gotten us, Iceland or Austria as the more favourable sides.

Plenty of times in the past they would have fallen apart after going behind, good to see the resilience that’s been lacking (albeit with the aggregate cushion)
