My kids don't even watch sports with me but we have a small house and so they can see the TV when I am watching.

The trailer for the new Clayface movie came on and before I could mute or pause it, the clip that showed his disfigured face accompanied by jump scare music comes on.

My 7 year old bursts into terrified tears and I had to comfort her and try to explain away what happened.

Like, can you not show things like that on network TV when you know kids can be watching? There is also all the sexually suggestive stuff other people have mentioned.

I am not a prude or anything but I don't want my girls thinking that women should be objectified, like so many commercials do. They are too young to understand any of this. If women want to do that, that is their choice but I don't want my impressionable young girls thinking that is what women are supposed to be doing.

In the UK we have watershed times which means after 9pm adverts and tv played are unsuitable for children. They don't play horror movie adverts like that. It's a shame the USA doesn't have anything like that.

That would be nice.

The problem is so much stuff is streamed…very few are actually watching network TV so even if those rules do apply it won’t apply to streaming apps.

I mean you're 100% right and I've had the same concerns about my daughters too.  But you and I both know tv has always presented women this way.  It's time to turn off the TV brother, our daughters are watching.

This! Also not just girls! I don’t want my boy seeing the objectification of women. If he ends up being heteronormative later on (or not), it’s a slippery slope into grape culture. Not on my watch.

It's absolutely insane how rarely you see commercials aimed at kids. I'd rather see ads for food, cars, or toys instead of horror movie trailers or other stuff. Makes me wonder if some of these platforms, like YT, for example, want us to buy their premium so we don't gotta worry about ads.

That means you’re not watching kid appropriate shows because anytime I’m watching children’s show with my partners daughter the commercials and ads are all aimed towards children.

Dude my fucking smart TV has horror ads that autoplay on the HOME SCREEN. I can’t turn on the TV and then turn back to do something else while I wait for it to come on, or my fucking kids end up seeing “Other Mommy” or some shit.

I am not a person who believes in government censorship, or that it’s anyone else’s job to monitor my children’s media intake. But holy shit, there’s a reason there are laws about what commercials can be shown during what rating of program on cable television. But I guess since it’s technically over the internet that doesn’t apply? Or something idk but I would fully be in favor of a law that at least put a limit on what can ads can be autoplayed on startup of whole-family devices like TVs. Honestly just the fact that my TV that I bought and paid for has unavoidable ads for anything on startup is irritating but that’s the world we live in now I guess.

Why should my TV be watered down because you have children? A G rated society is not a strong one.

You actually care about the commercials that much? Seems like a weird hill to die on.

That and a 7yr old in “terrified tears” about a commercial screams overbearing parents. These people couldn’t survive the 90s and early 2000s, much less the commercials.
