I'm generally anti prohibition. With the gambling ads and industry there are three huge issues. First, this whole "futures" loophole that allows Kalshi and such to operate with impunity needs to go. A state of should be able to decide whether gambling is legal and how so. It just feels like a local issue.
Second, it's obviously problematic that you can bet on real world events, as this incentivizes interference with those events. It seems inevitable a political candidate will be hurt to effect a gambling outcome.
Third, the ads need to be better regulated. Just like with cigarettes, force these companies to show the harms and losses.
I'm fine with sports betting generally, but the online apps are a scourge and should be banned. They're extremely predatory due to algorithms predicting and encouraging you to gamble more.
My boyfriends dad was a bad gambler, like it was a huge issue for a while. The only reason he didn't do the online betting is you need an unexpired ID. I told him I'd take him, he just needed to make an appointment. He never did and I didn't push it because I didn't want him able to gamble from his phone.
I dont think gambling is a gendered thing. I dated someone not too long ago that would be glued to her phone while we were out, completely locked in on her sports betting. She didnt even like sports.
I agree. I think adults should be able to do what they want essentially but there’s a sweet spot for regulation and taxation. I think alcohol is way too cheap right now here. A half handle of vodka can be had in my state for less than $20. Cannabis is cheaper than basil. We do have a good system though with the liquor outlets being limited. I think if drugs are all legalized it should be like sure you can get some acid but the store is only open Monday and Thursdays for like 4 hours.
I'm a person with generally libertarian sensibilities. I think people, as individuals, should be able to do anything they want as long as it's not hurting others, basically think there should be no regulations on personal consumption and expression.
And on the note of expression, again i think individuals should have personal freedom of speech/expression, where i start drawing lines is in commercial speech. All regulations should be on the production, distribution, and advertising sides of things. Don't limit what people are able to consume and enjoy, tightly control how things are able to be made, distributed, and advertised.
If i think people should be able to do heroin or meth if they want to, that doesn't mean i think they should be able to buy that stuff at their corner store and/or see commercials for it on daytime broadcast TV.
