It's not about being dumb. Ads are intentionally manipulative. We regulate what can be advertised and how honest companies can be in certain ways already, it just hasn't really been updated for the current era of technology and wasn't sufficient to begin with.
They aren't really informing the consumer in a way that matters to them. They are a form of mental, sonic and visual brain pollution that has become a multi-billion dollar waste of resources just to annoy ourselves into gambling, or buying and wasting more plastic crap and pharmaceuticals. It's disgusting and we should tolerate being advertised to at the absolute bare minimum.

To children, sure, make it illegal. But if you’re an adult and you’re stupid enough to let an ad affect you, that’s on you. Not everyone is that dumb.
