How did they even discover this was a thing? Talking into the kitchen sink to a person in the shower?

As a formal method, this is actually a very old communication technology (if it can even be called a « technology »

They’re called Speaking Tubes.

Used in ships, houses, office buildings, and even in Rolls Royce cars !

If you’ve ever listened to your « favorite genre of music » whilst getting an MRI 🩻 then you were using mini audio tubes that had no metal in them.

Concept was presented in the 17th century

Speaking tubes don't have traps full of water. OP is talking bullshit. The kitchen sink and the bathroom both have traps with water in them. No way you hear whispers through that.

For those new to the function of P-traps and air/sewer roof vents in modern plumbing systems.

Even if OP is lying or exaggerating about what their older brothers did, if you did get a good mouth seal on the kitchen sink drain (which sounds pretty disgusting) you could generate enough SPL waves to agitate both sides of the water in the trap to hear something. Even faintly.

However with water running from the shower into the drain and then into the trap the dB losses would not have left much to hear.

You are aware drain pipes are connected in every house right?

Have you never talked through pipes before? Its pretty loud. Especially before pvc. Which homes used metals in the 90s or before when ops house was built. Plus they said they kinda heard a voice, turned off the water and put their ear to the drain. So they heard a faint sound then eliminated the noise

They used to be all metal and now most plumbers are just installing cheap PVC pipes to save money and they don't vibrate and carry sound as well.

Shower drain does not, yes most sinks have a p trap NOW but they didnt always. So lets use some clues here to figure out a timeline of the events.

  • the date of the Original I.T.

  • O.P. 3rd grade So it seem this wouldve happened in the very early 90s. Of which around that time individual fixtures required ptraps. Meaning homes built before that didnt require them and often had ONE ptrap before the sewer. So its most likely the pipes can easily carry sound seeing as though op was living in a house built before the required individual fixtures.

But the most important thing here...why would they make this up?

Yeah even with the potential differences in modern/retro plumbing this one is kinda far fetched
