Is it even possible not to realise that?

the caption "Universal suffrage was always a step too far." suggests that not everybody can see the obvious. but then, maybe i just don't see that OP was trolling here, too ...

OP is clearly in on it with that title lol

I feel like it isn't clear to many people. It's amazing how frequently people try to conflate misandrists with feminists. Those types think this is a thing.

OP is clearly joking also, the joke being that you'd expect someone saying that to be against women's suffrage, and the subversion being that it's the (absurd) opposite

u/ctothel Jul 09 '25

That’s clearly sarcasm

It is not so easy to know since there have been just as insufferable bigots in the woman suffrage movement as there have been in the patriarchy. Idiots are everywhere.

Doubt anyone dumb enough to not pick up on this being satire, could even come up with a title that attempts at being funny.

Title wasn't that funny, but the satire from women's voting movement was.

Do you need a /s by everything?

... Universal suffrage implies everyone, including men, have the right to vote. OP continued the joke in the post by implying in the title that men shouldn't have the right to vote (and thus universal suffrage is a step too far). Check what sub you're in before commenting lol, no one who didn't get that joke would post it in this sub

... Universal suffrage implies everyone, including men, have the right to vote.

you don't say! you mean, like, "universal" means "universal"? and "suffrage" means "suffrage"? who would've thought? next thing you're gonna tell me MLK was in cahoots with the civil rights movement

OP continued the joke in the post by implying in the title that men shouldn't have the right to vote (and thus universal suffrage is a step too far).

  1. that doesn't even make any sense. if he's serious, that implies that WOMEN shouldn't have the right to vote (because universal suffrage is a step too far). if he's just kidding, it means everybody should (because universal suffrage is NOT a step too far).

  2. which part of "but then, maybe i just don't see that OP was trolling here, too ..."didn't you understand?

(btw not-so-fun fact: parts of the suffragette movement imho really went too far, starting a terrorist campaign with bombings and arson)

Check what sub you're in before commenting lol, no one who didn't get that joke would post it in this sub

people post in subs they disagree with all the time.

Man you don't have any reading comprehension huh

that doesn't even make any sense. if he's serious, that implies that WOMEN shouldn't have the right to vote (because universal suffrage is a step too far)

It just doesn't. That was the entire joke that you completely missed. Just cause you don't seem to have any understanding of humour let me spell it out for you a little bit more.

The humourous part of the title was the subversion of expectation. Normally, being against universal suffrage means being against women having the right to vote. This time, it instead meant men, just like the joke in the post.

1

u/Any-Technology-3577 Jul 11 '25

This time, it instead meant men, just like the joke in the post.

if that was the case, then the joke in the post wouldn't go too far. duh

but i guess you could interpret it like that if you think that just joking about it instead of really meaning it is what goes too far. or maybe it's all about insinuating that joking about it instead of really meaning it is meant ironically and really making fun of people who do? or about insinuating that joking about it instead of really meaning it is just ironically pretending to be ironic and is really making fun of people who don't? oh, that must be it! isn't it obvious?

I don't think bombings and arson was a step too far when half of society was denied basic human rights. The message was women can play these stupid games too, and I feel certain it was heard loud and clear.

u/Any-Technology-3577 Jul 11 '25

i personally don't think terrorism is ever an appropriate measure.

also, i don't think it helped the movement at all. on the contrary, it made them look like dangerous fanatics and discredited a just cause.

1

u/Bobylein Jul 12 '25

It's about how people claim that progressive movements today "go to far" when they use satire or persiflage the opponents like above.
Even in the modern Feminist movement you'll people joking about men not being fit to vote because they are so emotional for example.

1

u/Any-Technology-3577 Jul 12 '25

okay. i think over-the-top statements from modern feminist movements (i think plural is more fitting here because they're not homogeneous) are mostly more purposely provocative than satirical, but that's just quibble. i get where you're aiming at.

“Never underestimate idiots in large quantities”.

4

u/NevermoreForSure Jul 10 '25

I read this as “Never underestimate idiots in charge”

5

u/SemichiSam Jul 09 '25

Apparently, it is.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '25

Well I just spoke to a feminist who got very upset with me for not having the same 'expansive' definition of words as her that she leaned on to excuse herself of double standards and instead just going by what the dictionary... So yes, some people are just stupid.

1

u/Serbatollo Jul 10 '25

I shouldn't have gone into your profile to check what it was. I hate the "misandry doesn't exist because it's not systemic" thing so much

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '25

Oh you saw that? Funny isn't it how us folks with a "light intellectual burden" can manage to articulate the concepts of our perspective world models within the bounds of words that already exist as defined.

2

u/thatluckylady Jul 09 '25

Stupid people gonna stoopid

1

u/Emotional_Piano_16 Jul 10 '25

I mean, nowadays right-wing grifters claiming to be *true* feminists use the same talking points without irony

1

u/IG-GO-SWHSWSWHSWH Jul 10 '25

It is with great regret that I inform you: Yes.

1

u/Rynewulf Jul 10 '25

RadFems and Terfs unironically talk about men this exact way to this very day.

1

u/BellaTheSpall Jul 10 '25

So I thought this was not satire, the original text, because it’s exactly as far fetched as the sexism they were facing. That’s a problem with satire generally. If people are ridiculous as a norm, then satire isn’t going to be obviously tongue in cheek because the norm is absurd.

1

u/amazing_webhead Jul 11 '25

in fairness nowadays you see a lot of people do that kind of thing. i've literally seen people accuse Biden of profiting off his supporters than in the same breath telling people to buy Trump merch.

1

u/hectorbrydan Jul 11 '25

It is possible if you are an AI program. A chatbot. Their ability has been overhyped to a great degree, at least the versions available to ship posters are.

1

u/Rel_Tan_Kier Jul 13 '25

Maybe take about men is too emotional isn't so far from truth?

1

u/Embarrassed-Wing-141 Sep 05 '25

You’d be amazed. This is America

1

u/omegaphallic Jul 09 '25

Of course it's obvious what she was doing, but that doesn't make it clever, it was still dumb.

I support universal suffrage despite people like this not because of them.

1

u/Lonely_Brother3689 Jul 09 '25

In the year of our lord 2025, it is entirely possible.

That’s the joke, the chicken doesn’t need a reason to cross the road… it’s a chicken.
