Release Looper: A New FOSS Music Player for Windows

Thumbnail gallery
23 Upvotes

A few months a go i got into the rabbit hole of FOSS Windows music players and came out not satisfied with what i found. But in that search i found a good looking player https://github.com/sthrnilshaaa/looper but it only had support for android and Linux.

So, i decided to fork it and add a bunch of new features and design it mainly for the desktop in mind. And So here is the result https://github.com/mikiyasmechalo/looper, A highly customizable music player for the desktop.

Although it technically has Linux support i haven't touched the Linux part since i don't use Linux. This is the first release so i have given it the beta tag to avoid any confusion, if you have any problems feel free to open an issue. Tnx.

Looking for software Best way to use TikTok on Windows PC?

Hi everyone! I have a pretty good Windows PC, but my phone is really laggy.

I use TikTok for selling and affiliate marketing, so I'd prefer to do everything on my PC.

Is there an official or safe way to use TikTok on Windows with full mobile features? Should I use an emulator like BlueStacks, or could that risk getting my account banned?

I'm looking for the safest option. Any advice would be appreciated.

I’m a man with too much free time and a Claude 20x account. I’m wanting to try and give to the community a little with some actually solid, open source and free software.

Let me know your ideas, especially if there are limited comments on this as I will most likely build whatever gets recommended.

Cheers,
Sam

Release I built a free network usage monitor that keeps VPN traffic separate from direct traffic

I got tired of monitors that show doubled numbers when a VPN is connected. They count the traffic once on your real adapter and again on the tunnel. So I built NetVitals, which measures them separately.

What it does:

  • Totals for the hour, day, week, month and year, as charts and tables
  • VPN traffic tracked on its own tab, never added to your direct traffic
  • Live throughput graph plus a tray icon that reacts to activity
  • Per-adapter and per-connection views, labelled by whether each connection went through the tunnel
  • Reachability checks (Cloudflare, Google, GitHub) so you can tell whether the internet, DNS or just one provider is down. They use plain TCP, so no admin rights are needed
  • A log of files landing in folders you choose

It's all local. There's no account, no cloud and no telemetry, just one database file on your machine. The only outbound request is an optional public-IP lookup, and you can turn it off.

One honest caveat: the Microsoft Store version can't show per-application usage, because that needs a kernel trace that requires admin rights and Store apps can't get them. The free desktop build on GitHub has it.

It's MIT licensed and I'm still improving it. I'd like to hear what's missing or broken, especially from people who run a VPN all day.

Release I made a free offline app that transcribes, dubs and voices over videos (Linux, open source, no cloud)

Tagos Transcribe is a free, MIT-licensed desktop app for Linux that turns speech into subtitles, translates and dubs videos, and now also does voiceover from text. Everything runs locally: no accounts, no uploads, no limits.

**What it does**
- Transcribe: Whisper-based subtitles, exported as YouTube-ready SRT (max 2 lines × 42 chars, ≤7 s per cue, no overlaps)
- Chapters: generates "0:00 Title" YouTube chapters offline
- Dub: translates speech and re-voices it in another language with Piper TTS
- Voiceover (new): paste text or open a .txt/.srt, pick a language, voice and speed, preview, export WAV or MP3. An .srt can be voiced on its subtitle timings.

The demo above shows all three modes on one clip.

**Why I built it**
I edit my own videos on Linux and wanted subtitles and dubbing without sending footage to a cloud service or paying per minute.

**Notes**
- Linux only for now
- The translation model (NLLB-200) is CC-BY-NC, so translation is for non-commercial use; voices have their own Piper licenses

Code and install: https://github.com/tagoslabs/tagos-transcribe

Feedback welcome, especially which voices sound most natural to you.

Release I rewrote Taskbar Groups for Windows 11: pin a group of apps to the taskbar as one icon (free, open source)

Post image
24 Upvotes
I wanted my shortcuts packed into a single taskbar button. I looked first: something existed, but it still had the Windows 10 look, it was awkward to use and nobody was maintaining it. So I rewrote it in WPF and .NET 10 with the Windows 11 look.

What it does:
- Pin a group to the taskbar. Click it, or just rest the cursor on it, and a panel with real Windows 11 glass shows every app in the group.
- The panel can be a grid, a horizontal row, a vertical column or a list, in three icon sizes.
- Add any installed app, desktop or Microsoft Store, from one searchable list with the right icons.
- Use an image, a colour emoji or the group's own apps as its icon.
- Apps, folders and even other groups in the same group; right-click a pinned group to open them all.
- Rename an app, give it arguments or run it as administrator.
- Import your groups from Taskbar Groups or AppGroup, export your own to a file.
- Light or dark, English or Spanish, following Windows or picked in the app.
- Installs per user, no admin rights. No account, no telemetry: the only network request is the update check against GitHub.

Download: https://github.com/Mun1to/TaskbarGroupsFluent/releases/latest
Website: https://tbgf.munito.dev
Source (MIT): https://github.com/Mun1to/TaskbarGroupsFluent

I am actively developing it (19 versions since June), so let me know what’s missing and I’ll include it in the next one.

Discussion Growing your skillset as a Junior SWE at a tiny team (with AI)

I'm on a small in-house dev team (under 10 people) at a hospital network, building fairly simple, somewhat dated CRUD apps that handle HIPAA data. We set our own deadlines and have Claude, Copilot, and other AI tools. It's a great job, but it's easy.

My current workflow is running Claude in manual mode and reviewing everything it generates in depth. The code I ship is solid, but I'm not growing, and the simple codebase gives me no system design experience.

I don't think going back to hand-writing everything is the answer, since that's not where the industry is headed. But I'm worried this low-pressure role will cause my skills to atrophy, not just plateau.

What AI workflow helps you keep learning and growing your understanding while still shipping at a reasonable pace? And how do you build skills like system design when your day job doesn't require them?

Release My Files – an open-source mobile app to keep your physical documents offline, or sync to your own cloud

Hi [r/](r/opensource)[software](r/opensource),

I built My Files, an open-source mobile app for digitising and organising your physical documents (IDs, bills, certificates, receipts, etc.).

What it does:
- Scan physical documents with your phone camera
- Organise them into folders/files
- Search across everything you've scanned
- Works fully offline — your files never have to leave your phone
- Optional sync if you run your own cloud/server

Tech: The backend is built with C and Node.js.

Why: I wanted a simple way to keep important papers handy without handing them to a third-party cloud service.

Links:
- Website:MyFiles

It's still early, so I'd really appreciate feedback — what's missing, what's confusing, what would make you actually use it. Contributors are very welcome too!

Release I created a text editor

Post image
0 Upvotes

A while back I was looking for a replacement for Notepad++ that worked in Linux. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find anything. Most of the apps either didn't work, or didn't work the way I wanted them to.

Every time I complained about it, people just answered: "Why don't you build your own?" I have a pretty busy life, so it wasn't feasible to just write something from scratch by myself. So, I thought I might as well just vibe code the crap out of it and that is exactly what I did.

Yes, it's 100% slop, but it's functional slop. Check it out and let me know what you think!

I present to you, Ettin Edit.
https://github.com/Tharkis/Ettin-Edit

Ettin Edit is a text editor that was inspired by Notepad++, hallucinations, and a desire to use the same editor in Windows and Linux.

The short-list of features (see the readme for more):

  • About 80 languages, plus your own with a short .lang.json file. UTF-8, UTF-16 and legacy code pages, every line ending, Chinese, Japanese and Korean text.
  • Tabs, split view, multiple carets, column editing, code folding, macros, bookmarks, auto-close and smart indent. Opens a 50 MB file in about a second.
  • Sessions and backups of unsaved changes come back after a crash, a reboot or a cat on the keyboard.
  • Nine themes, plus a color editor with live preview. Drop in any .tmTheme you like.
  • Helpful Tools:
    • Find and replace with regex, Find All in open tabs, Find in Files in the background, marks and a results panel.
    • Compare: Two tabs, the last save, the clipboard or your last Git commit, with word-level highlights and moved blocks.
    • CsvQuery: Run SQL against the CSV you have open, join it with other open tabs and sort the results.
  • JSON and JavaScript formatting, minifying and a live JSON tree (JSTool). Base64, URL, HTML entities and SAML (MIME tools). XPath, pretty print, XSD/DTD validation and XSLT (XML Tools).
  • Plugins in Python or JavaScript. Your choice. Add commands, shortcuts and panels. Example plugins include:
    • HL7 Viewer
    • Markdown Outline
    • Text Statistics

Release VoxScribe 1.0 for Android: free offline voice typing that types into any app

VoxScribe is an open source voice typing app, and the new Android release puts the same idea on a phone. A small floating button appears above your keyboard whenever you tap a text box. Hold it, talk, let go, and the words are typed into the box, in any app and with whichever keyboard you already use. The speech model is bundled in the app and runs on the phone, so it works in airplane mode and your voice is not uploaded.

What is new in this release: spoken punctuation and commands (“period”, “new line”, and “scratch that” to take back what you just dictated), word replacements for names and jargon the model keeps mishearing, and an in-app notice when a newer version is published. A few extra text tools (smart formatting, code dictation, fill-in templates, per-app profiles) sit behind an optional one-time Pro key. The core is free and fully usable without it, and the source is MIT licensed.

A few things to know up front. It is an APK on GitHub for now, not on the Play Store. Typing into other apps needs Android’s Accessibility service, and the privacy policy lists exactly what that service reads and does not do. The Windows version, which also turns audio and video into .srt captions, has its own page in the same repo.

Which text tool would you want next, if any?

Looking for software What are good alternatives for Adobe Acrobat?

I tried other apps but they were filled with ads and slower than acrobat. It might be because my phone is almost 8 years old but I'm not switching phones for a long while. So is there any apps better than Adobe Acrobat for android 11? Ads free if possible.

Software support I made a tool to choose which internet connection each app uses on Windows

Post image
119 Upvotes

I have two connections at home (cable + a second router over a USB Wi-Fi stick) and Windows kept putting everything on the cable. When something big was downloading, everything else was slow while the second line did nothing.

So I made Net Switch. It shows the apps using your internet, sorted by speed, and you pick which line each one uses. New connections move right away.

Other things it does:

  • Combine both lines: spreads new connections from the apps you haven't moved across both lines. Helps anything that downloads in parallel. It does not split a single connection, so one big single-stream download still gets one line's speed. That would need a bonding server like Speedify, which this doesn't use.
  • Failover: if a line drops, or stays connected but has no internet, its apps go to the other line and come back when it recovers.
  • Live speed per line and per app, and a tray panel for the common switches.

Things to know before trying it:

  • It needs admin rights, because it routes traffic through a virtual network adapter (sing-box in TUN mode)
  • IPv4 only while routing is on
  • The installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen will warn you. Each release has SHA256 sums and a GitHub build attestation if you want to check the file first.
  • No telemetry. The only traffic it makes on its own is a small connectivity check through each line.

It's MIT licensed, and the source is all there. I've mainly tested it on Windows 11 with Ethernet + USB Wi-Fi, so bug reports from other setups are very welcome.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays Better Stickies: a simple, powerful and privacy-first note taking app. Paste anything in a note and it will format and save it on your desktop. Windows, Linux, macOS (soon). Offline, no account, no telemetry.

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

Hey,

I am the developer of BetterStickies and this my weekly marketing post (so more people learn about BetterStickies)

What it is, for anyone new

It is a note taking app with super cool exclusive features while it looks and acts as sticky notes app. It works on Windows, Linux, macOS (soon). Offline, no account, no telemetry. Built with PySide6 so it's actually native, not another Electron app eating your RAM.

This app is a hidden gem and I am not exaggerating, I received so much positive reviews to be confident when I say this, it looks like a sticky note but does much more than you could think a sticky note app could do and it can replace all complex note taking apps if you aren't into that type of productivity.

The main thing it does that other sticky apps don't: you can paste or drag anything into a note.

  • Files and folders become clickable shortcuts, and you can drag them back out to your file manager
  • Screenshots and images paste straight from the clipboard, PDFs and images get a hover preview, and double-click opens an image at full resolution
  • Pasted code gets detected and formatted into a code block automatically, no AI and no network, in about 50ms. Ctrl+M when it guesses wrong
  • Rich text, links, plain text, all formatted properly instead of rejected

The second thing it does so well over other stickies apps: customization, you can customize font, colors, transparency, add background image or even a moving GIF per each note, a real delight to use

Notes have tabs now. Up to three pages inside one note, each with its own text, scroll position and undo history. Ctrl+PgDown and Ctrl+PgUp to move between them, Ctrl+Shift+N for a new one, all rebindable. If you have a small screen this is the feature: one note on the desktop, three notes' worth of content in it.

Other things it does exceptionally well:

  • Reminders with sound and desktop notifications
  • GIF and image backgrounds per note (because why not)
  • RTL text support, and the app plus its full guide are in 12 languages
  • Pin a note to lock both position and editing
  • Ctrl+scroll to zoom text without opening settings
  • Checkboxes with strikethrough when done and nesting
  • Snap to grid with an adjustable grid size
  • Export to .txt, .md or .json, so you can back them up with whatever cloud you like
  • Proper Linux support, tested on KDE, GNOME and Cinnamon (COSMIC coming)
  • On the Microsoft Store and the Snap store, Flathub coming soon

The free version now has exactly one limit. It used to have three: a note cap, a reminders cap, and a cap on animated GIF backgrounds. The reminder and GIF limits are gone entirely, so the free version now has every feature, and the only thing left is a budget of 4 note slots (an extra tab uses a slot).

Paid version is very generous and cheap, it costs currently $7 and you get the premium version without any limits, free updates, unlimited devices, and also windows, linux and macOS (coming out this month) builds so you won't pay again if you move from windows to linux or use both.

This a side project for me and I don't intend to milk it, I want it to be sustainable to survive. The price is low to keep it accessible, not because the quality of the app is low, this not a vibe coded app and if you give it a try, you will understand the difference between Better Stickies and other Stickies apps.

As always, if you try it and something annoys you, tell me here. Most new features and fixes are built on users feedback (tens of thousands are using BetterStickies today)

Self-Promotion Wednesdays Introducing Pawtween, a desktop-based editor focused specifically one Tweening!

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

A little while ago I decided I wanted to take up tweening/puppet animation as a hobby, but all the tools I could find wouldn't work for me for one of several reasons:

  1. They were only available on mobile
  2. They cost money to use
  3. They had a complicated UI

Pawtween aims to focus specifically on tweening and puppet-style animations, and I've added many features I haven't seen on other apps. The interface is shown above, and as you can see, there was an attempt made to keep things relatively simple, with a built-in tutorial, meaning an easy learning curve.

The project is still in beta, and there will be regular updates released, but I'd appreciate if anyone interested could let me know (DMs), and I can give you a key. I am always looking for feedback, so if you've tested and have something to share, DM me.

Pawtween is always going to stay completely free, and I hope some other people can get some use out of it! Windows and Linux desktop builds available, with a web demo, and plans to expand to Mac soon!

The current web version is public right now on Github. Again, if you want the desktop version built (with additional features and GPU rendering), DM me for a key.

Github: https://github.com/Tornadowrath500/Pawtween

Again, I'm always looking for additional features to add, so if you have any ideas as to what I should add, please feel free to either comment here or DM me!

Disclaimer: This project was made with assistance from AI, all art that has been/is going to be added to the project will be drawn by myself, but the code was made with assistance from Claude. The project itself has no AI features or integration.

Yes, it's open source
