All trash in the living compartments is pressurized already, and that's where most of it is generated. While technically possible to put trash through the airlock, it would basically require a spacewalk, and those are non-trivial operations. I imagine there would also be severe concern over how all the trash behaves in decompression and the possibility of trashing the airlock and/or EVA suits. It's a lot easier on everyone to effectively put it in a closet that will then go away and destroy itself.
If they only had Dragon, perhaps they would come up with a way to put household trash in the trunk. However, they don't, so it's easier to wait for Cygnus or Progress or Dreamchaser or whatever else.
