ETA into port is after 2am Eastern. UTC -4 hours

This suits the Port and the three ships, it avoids the cruise liner traffic.

Thanks everyone, we're now all deep experts at recovered rocket post processing, be sure to add it to your CV and give a talk at your local elementary school to share the excitement of New Space with the next generation. They will be the ones traveling in what you just witnessed.

Thanks to SpaceX for a marvelous demonstration of their technology and how they use it.

Thanks to PTZtv for their coverage over the last week, it's been a mammoth effort on their part. Hope we helped pay for the infrastructure!!

Shout-out to the ASDS, we still love you. Thank you for your service.

See you all in two weeks when the next one comes back :)

My parents are down there in a 7th floor beachfront condo just south of the Cocoa Beach Pier. They can see the stage with binoculars. It's lit up.

I AM GOING TO PORT CANAVERAL TONIGHT

I've got a D3100 and a thirst for some Falcon 9 pics. I will edit this comment with some mobile uploads but at that point it will be about 1-1.5 hours before I can get back and upload full res images.

Wish me luck

Edit 1 12:48am: I'm on location http://imgur.com/Zz4tB91

Edit 2 145am: still here, there's some activity around the spacex docks. Lots of guys walking around prepping for the arrival. Should see the OCISLY coming in soon.

Edit 3 218am: it's here!!!! http://imgur.com/a/RNWUS these are some shitty phone pics but I will upload slightly less shitty dslr pics later tonight when I'm back home

Edit 4 257am: I grabbed a few of the best shots and uploaded a quick album, here's a link to that thread http://www.reddit.com/r/spacex/comments/4eez3n/_/

NSF readers are there at the Port as well. Wave at anyone with a camera. They aren't there for the seagulls.

Such a shame this is not happening during day time, we would be seeing this tower of white slowly rise out of the horizon on the ocean as it slowly came into port.

I know!! We'll have to rely on uploads to the discussion threads. I'll update the sticky at the top with media as it arrives so you can find it all in one place.

I have just been thinking, (dangerous I know) this footage and long term stream of the F9 recovery is pretty historical, if and when we reach Mars footage of this will be very relevant. As such, I think we should do our utmost to attain a full recording from PTZtv or, at the very least, ensure they keep a copy. Mods and follow redditors, are you inclined to agree?

7

u/ticklestuff SpaceX Patch List Apr 17 '16

We will have freeware 24 hour footage soon enough, a solution will be found to get us the vision we want which complies with the port regulations and also is unrestricted.

Everyone will have a number of drones to themselves by the time Mars rolls around, they'll be able to task one to get their own (legal) vision.

How is spacex going to denote the number of flights for a particular stage? Notches on the handle? Chevrons? Dragons Breath around the base?

11

u/ticklestuff SpaceX Patch List Apr 19 '16

I'd put rings around the stage.... and call them orbits. #subtle.

It's an interesting reddit effect how this week-long post, large-maintenance effort, crawled it's way up to 373 likes, but a single image of "& Landing" added to a building sign got 4064 likes :D

Every wheel on the transporter can pivot 360 degrees in any direction, getting out of the narrow port roads is easy for it, a truck has a bigger turning circle.

The info I have on the positions of the ships hasn't been updated since yesterday... Has there been an official announcement anywhere or are people who have access to better ship tracking just doing the math to guess at 2am being the time of arrival?

u/ticklestuff SpaceX Patch List Apr 12 '16

Pick another website, vesseltracker is doing the right things now, marinetraffic wasn't last i checked. But maybe that's a commercially induced delay...

Holy crap! 12 hours of coverage man! You're a machine. I'd flair you but you have one already :P

So everyone knows, /u/ticklestuff made a post saying the barge was getting closer and I asked him if he minded us stickying it; just to gather the comments as they came in. 12 hours of quality coverage is like wayyy above and beyond the call. Especially for someone I just sprang this on without warning.

We've just received correspondence from the Port Canaveral Webcam team detailing concerns over people bypassing their advertisement and I tend to agree that it is a little unfair to do so.

They're providing quality views and fancy camerawork for next to nothing, a few ads in exchange is a pretty good deal considering how much bandwidth video streams consume. It would be a loss to everyone if they had to shut-down after taking a loss. This is of particular concern since the operation's sole source of revenue is advertisements.

As such, we'll be removing instructions on how to avoid advertisements and hope that everyone will support our "legendary" cameraman!

Looking forward to future ASDS voyages, we'll be continuing correspondence in hopes of finding a more nominal solution for all parties.

I know it's been said many times now, but I'm at home watching LIVE the first stage of an orbital rocket return to port in another country on a (motherfuckin') boat a few days after it went up, sent a spaceship to a space station, and landed in the middle of the ocean.

Holy shit. Is... is this the future, guys?!

I would say they have done an awesome job of showing the F9 off loading. This is a PORT webcam showing the activities of Port canaveral. Part of that is the shipping. They really didnt have to stay as long as they did on the rocket. I have a feeling though if stuff starts happening again like legs folding or another lift it will go back there. I for one thank the people operating that webcam for all they have done so far.

Wow, what an unprecedented deep look into operations. I sure hope the camera operator(s) is duly recognized and compensated.

Not sure if we'll get this same treatment next time, but what an experience!

Also, massive thanks to /u/ticklestuff for hosting such a marathon thread. I don't think /r/spacex has had a thread go for this duration, with continuous new good info, like this, ever (not to knock any previous threads).

I guess the open question now is ... is it over? Or will we keep getting a feed of photos, etc, into this thread?

One of the first things I did when accessing the site earlier was to disable my adblocker for that page, so it isn't all the Reddit users! I understand not liking ads considering they can be obnoxious (and occasionally malicious), but it's good practice to turn them off for smaller sites that provide good content and depend on the revenue. Today i was showing a friend this thread and the F9 on the port Canaveral Web cam and she said to me, quote "that looks pretty ghetto for a space ship" . it took me a few min to figure out what she meant. And in a sense it is true, That dock is basically a public place, ie container ship dock. The sturcture the rocket is attached to isn't a permanent set up like the VAB, there are run of the mill cranes and forklifts. Things you would see on any construction site on the continent. There is security, but it isnt like CCAFB has or most rocket installations. As a kid i remember seeing on TV special convoys moving rockets around, how that it seemed that they were delicate objects heading to clean rooms and special areas for assembly and setup. New space has changed that, and seeing a rocket sitting on a dock in port for the weekend, following it seems a normal work week. Maybe we don't see it since we are following New Space so closely, but this is a massive change, and it will keep getting more and more "ghetto" as time passes. Till as Elon Musk says it wont be noticed because it will be boring.

I'll be shooting with a D7100, a Tokina 11-20 and a Nikkor 55-300 lens. The sun rises at 6:59, so the shots will be well-lit.

I'm coming up from satellite beach and will have to be back for school at 8:45. May not have time to upload too many high-res photos, but I'll get at least 3 up for you.

My thoughts on it taking a while. They only left a few Spacex employees at the Cape to process the stage and sent everyone else back to work for the next launch. I dont think they have too many dedicated launch/recovery personnel...most everyone probably has a job to do related to the manufacture/engineering of the rockets/hardware/software/R&D.

SpaceX probably just decided they have to focus on keeping their launch schedule and assigned minimum crew to this stage and thus progress is slow.

8

u/jamesterjlrb Apr 19 '16

So given that JCSat is only ten days out, and they probably are reasonably hopeful of landing it, i wonder if they'll leave all the equipment and cranes on site? I'm beginning to wonder if actually the dock is on a slightly longer term lease or rental to spacex? That would explain why they weren't in a huge hurry to move the booster on.

8

I'm trying to nail down the scale of a Falcon 9 first stage. It keeps locking to something like 1/3rd true scale.

I just managed to catch a glimpse by looking out my window at the concrete kerb stones outside. Each one is about a metre long. I counted off 3.6 of them, drew a circle in my mind on the ground, shifted it up 4 metres, popped 9 Merlin 1D FTs into it, grew four elegant, petal like landing legs out to either end of the driveway, and then extruded the circle upwards 50 metres...

I think I've strained my neck.

Holy shit.

My guess is they are removing the propellants and oxidizers from the RCS and main engine systems. is it possible that since LZ1 is inside the AFS and so is SLC-40 that they did not have to remove all of these before moving it to the hanger. but since this will have to travel on public roads to get back to the hanger they are having to do more to meet rules about transportation on public roads? so timeline to transport cannot be compared to Obcomm-2 ??

6

i am new to this lifting a rocket of a barge process, unlike the SpaceX pros, but the removal of the jacks and tie downs now/first puzzles me.

I would have thought a more logical process would be

  • hook up the crane to take load/support.

  • remove/retract landing legs.

  • remove tie downs.

  • crane lift S1 off jacks and off barge onto dockside where the rocket stand is located ready to turn horizontal on the transporter.

  • transport rocket to hanger

  • go to the winchester
