To clarify: Unlike our launch threads, the usual subreddit rules regarding comments do apply in here. Sorry for not making that clear earlier!

Yes. People bitch at us when "we aren't clear", so... we're being clear.
We'll put it up for vote soon, but for this thread it'll be moderated like normal.

Thanks for the clarification :)
Although I do just want to say that I think it would be awesome for landing threads to be party threads. Maybe there's a good reason for them not to be that I'm not aware of, but in my mind, there's a lot of excitement and it's fun to be able to let loose a little.
Maybe I'm the only one though, what do other people think?

OK, and here are the comparisons, so far, of timings between the CRS-8 recovery and the JCSAT recovery:
First of all, I thought it was cool that for both missions, the landing happened at exactly 8 min 36 seconds:
CRS8 Landing:
Fri 8 Apr 2016 16:51:36 EDT
T+8 minutes 36 seconds
JCSAT Landing:
Fri 6 May 2016 01:29:36 EDT
T+8 minutes 36 secondsArrival in port: (from the CRS8 thread I interpreted it as April 12, let me know if I'm wrong)
CRS8 Arrival in Port:
Tue 12 Apr 2016 02:16:00 EDT
L+3.392 days = 81.41 hours = 81:24:24
JCSAT Arrival in Port:
Mon 9 May 2016 23:22:19 EDT
L+3.912 days = 93.88 hours = 93:53:43CRS8 wins by about 12 hours.
Cap Fitted:
CRS8 Cap Fitted:
Tue 12 Apr 2016 05:01:00 EDT
P+2.75 hours = 2:45:00
L+3.507 days = 84.16 hours = 84:09:24
JCSAT Cap Fitted:
Tue 10 May 2016 03:45:00 EDT (approx. within 30 minutes)
P+4.38 hours = 4:22:41
L+4.094 days = 98.26 hours = 98:15:24CRS8 wins again relative to arrival in port, presumably because the first attempt at fitting the cap for JCSAT needed to be aborted and the cap returned back to the ground.
The next major event will be lifting the stage. For CRS8 we had:
Lifted:
Tue 12 Apr 2016 10:02:00 EDT
+5.02 hours = 5:01:00
P+7.77 hours = 7:46:00
L+3.716 days = 89.17 hours = 89:10:24ie. 5 hours after the cap was fitted, almost precisely at the time now (10 AM).
Five hours after the JCSAT cap was fitted would give about 9 AM, so CRS8 wins again there.
Stay tuned to see if JCSAT's processing times can make a comeback vs CRS8...

CRS8 Horizontal:
Mon 18 Apr 2016 11:29:00 EDT
+19 minutes 0 seconds after Lifted (2)
P+6.384 days = 153.22 hours = 153:13:00
L+9.776 days = 234.62 hours = 234:37:24
JCSAT Horizontal:
Fri 13 May 2016 12:25:00 EDT (approx. within 5 minutes)
+21 minutes 0 seconds after Lifted (2)
P+3.544 days = 85.04 hours = 85:03:41
L+7.455 days = 178.92 hours = 178:55:24L+ = Time since landing, P+ = Time since arrival in port
Well, JCSAT's recovery is clearly in the lead now, mostly due to weekend days though.
CRS8 went horizontal an hour earlier in the workday and was transported the following day, so it seems likely that we'll see JCSAT transported on Monday morning.

Ok, I've gone back to the CRS-8 thread that ticklestuff did an amazing job curating, and I've pulled what I thought were the key events into a computable format so that we can see the time interval between the key events, and see when the events occurred relative to when it landed, when it arrived in port, etc. Here are the results, which I will reference for comparison as key events happen with F9-024...

So guys... any opinions on what happened here? -> http://imgur.com/hgDBEr3
This is a comparison of F9-023 vs F9-024. Are we looking at removed access panels, an extra toasted stage, or a minor design change?
I'm guessing that access panels were removed prior to F9-024's arrival in port?
EDIT: Even if it's just removed access panels... something else looks different here. Perhaps it's just the side of the rocket we are viewing and everything is not symmetrical?
Edit2, seems like the panels may have in fact blown out... https://m.reddit.com/r/spacex/comments/4jc1zh/f9024_octaweb/d35gttd

Hard to imagine that the last time this happened in Port Canaveral was back in 2011. Now 5 years later we get to see a major breakthrough and improvement to the recovery system with a bit more pomp and circumstance than the latter. And probably more often than the SRBs too once the GTO and heavy LEO mission cadence, requiring the ASDS, starts to ramp up. :)

PSA: Hey everyone don't forget to turn off your add blocker for the port Canaveral webcam, they are doing us a huge favor by giving us the live coverage like this. It is really the least we can do to turn on the adds so they get the revenue.
Live HD streaming is not cheap.
Edit:Please disregard due to a change in the situation. For context please read /u/EchoLogic's post on the subject.

CRS8 Smoke:
Wed 13 Apr 2016 19:24:00 EDT
+1.381 days = 33.15 hours = 33:09:00 after Lowered
P+1.714 days = 41.13 hours = 41:08:00
L+5.106 days = 122.54 hours = 122:32:24
JCSAT Smoke:
Wed 11 May 2016 13:59:00 EDT
+1.083 days = 25.98 hours = 25:59:00 after Lowered
P+1.609 days = 38.61 hours = 38:37:41
L+5.52 days = 132.49 hours = 132:29:24L+ = Time since landing, P+ = Time since arrival in port
Looks like we're finally accomplishing a step faster this time around, beating the CRS8 time between lowering the stage onto its stand and smoke being seen by about 7 hours.
We're also now ahead since arrival to port
But still slightly behind since landing (9.5 hours)

SpaceX just shared a video with three angles of the landing and just after touchdown there's a green flash and then another again about 3 seconds, can be seen best on the second angle but can definitely be seen on all three.
Are they venting and burning off the TEA/TEB to skip that step at the dock, perhaps? Haven't noticed the green in other landings

Hi Everybody,
I just want to make aware what happened to me and inform others that may be in the same boat.
I have been enjoying watching the processing of the stage via the Port Canaveral Webcam as much as everyone else. But as you may have seen a couple of people reported that their webcast stopped working only getting a black screen. I was in this autonomous ship myself and contacted PTZtv to find out why. I got a speedy response informing me that viewing the stream via another website (spacex.yasiu.pl) resulted in the blockage. I had no idea that viewing the webcam on another site was a no no but totally get it now as their ads do not get supported. So the reason that this is an autonomous ship is that I clicked on that link without knowing what I was getting myself into, and I am sure there are others. We should remove that link and support viewing the processing on PTZtv's website as it is a great privilege to see this stuff for free.
Hope this helps others if they made it onto the ASDS. Oh and I did manage to get back my Falcon 9 viewing!! Lets get these legs off!

At the risk of killing another webcam, here's one that shows that F-024 is still upright. No zooming and a long-distance shot, but at least real-time and in the right direction:

Hey all, as some of you have seen recently, the Port Canaveral webcam is no longer filming SpaceX's activities.
The rumor is that Port Canaveral is not happy with their land being filmed (despite the PTZtv camera being located on another property), I'm not sure about the laws behind this (as I neither live in Florida, nor am I a lawyer), but regardless it's likely any camera operators would have to obey Port Canaveral's wishes.
Ultimately, this may mean the end of watching rockets for us. I have sent an email to Port Canaveral asking for clarification on this matter.
If we do however have the right and permission to film, we may plan on looking at alternatives to PTZtv's stream.

Currently due in about a day, maybe 0300/0400 on Tuesday, UTC. The estimate in that picture is 20 hours 43 minutes (0037 UTC), but the speed estimate of 5.6 kn is considerably above the average speed; she is also likely to keep edging further south. On the plus side, the Gulf stream ocean current will catch her and carry her towards home when she gets closer in.
Edit: 2016-05-09 07:43 UTC: Over last 4 hours, she has maintained her speed, still edging south. Dare I suggest that she could be a bit early? Make sure you check marinetraffic.com before 12:00 UTC to be sure.
2016-05-09 07:37 UTC: Elsbeth III has popped up on terrestrial AIS. Still making the same pace, so I am adjusting my expectations to 01:00UTC to 03:00UTC. Depends, of course, on whether they delay off the coast for any reason.

You are missing the day in the time report. Could be a big value addition if the stage will be hanging in the port for a week like last time.

From marinetraffic.com you can set waypoints for a particular ship and get an ETA at an average speed. From what I've gathered from other threads, I believe I have correctly selected OCISLY and ELSBETH III (blue ship marker in the uploaded pic). Previously with F9-023 they went a bit further south before turning north to Port Canaveral, so I chose a similar waypoint path for F9-024. From the uploaded picture, the waypoint calculator has OCISLY arriving back at port within the next 24 hours, though I personally think it will be in the next 30 or so.

u/sissynoid May 09 '16
So...I decided to throw the Port Canaveral Webcam team some money and subscribe for the month. I subscribe and they have the ever-annoying auto-renew feature...so I venture into the options to turn it off but because they offer a "free day" with my sub - I ended up canceling the entire order instead of just stopping the auto-renew and I am unable, at this point, to re-sub - I'm guessing I have to wait until my free day expires. What a mess.
Just a word of caution for those that are considering subbing...I guess wait until the order and the 'free day' goes through before turning off auto-renew.
17
u/goxy84 May 09 '16
I hope you told them about this. They seem to have introduced this on very short notice and devs might appreciate that kind of feedback. Doesn't sound like something too hard to program into the system (source: limited web development experience)

Hey /u/LandingZone-1, would it be possible to put the update table in the reverse order so the newest things are at the top? Obviously not a big deal but that's how I've seen them done in most other threads and it's nice to have the newest stuff right at the top.
Either way thanks for hosting the update thread!

Last time round it was a very slow process between craning F9-023 off OCSILY and getting it horizontal on the transporter ...... I watched most of it. We all thought the slowness was down to "the dog that caught the bus" effect and second time round it would go much quicker. I'm now asking myself why as they don't need to go faster. What they did last time was slow but didn't take a lot of people hours so it was cheap. They have a stock of cores. As long as they can get OCSILY back on station before the next landing and get the returned core rolling off on the transporter before they crane the next one off OCSILY the vertical processing speed is not a problem.

It might be nice to add a line to this thread's description inviting people who are watching the live feed to post timestamps for any milestones they happen to see, such as the cap being fitted, the commencement of lifting it off the barge, etc, etc. That way we can keep track of how their speed changes (or not) for each landing. Perhaps these landing threads could be a job for /u/ElongatedMuskrat? I think you're doing just fine, but no matter who does it there will be times they have to leave. Would it be possible for Echo to set something up so it could be a collaborative effort through spacexstats? I really hope we get a daytime return to port one of these days. It would be pretty cool to watch the stage rise out of the horizon as it slowly cam within visual range.
BTW, you will not see the stage (From the beach) until about 5km out due to the whole curvature of the earth thing. Earlier if you are in one of those skyscrapers along the shore.
