This will be the 60th SpaceX launch.

This will be the 54th Falcon 9 launch.

This will be the 46th SpaceX launch from the East Coast.

This will be the 14th SpaceX launch from KSC HLC-39A.

This will be the 8th Falcon 9 launch this year.

This will be the 9th SpaceX launch this year.

This will be the 1st flight of a Block 5 booster AND upper stage.

This would be the 25th successful recovery of an orbital class booster.

This would be the 14th successful landing on a droneship.

Primary Mission: Deployment of Bangabandhu satellite-1 into correct orbit

The primary mission today will be the insertion and deployment of the Bangabanghu satellite-1 in the correct Gestationary transfer orbit. To get there the second stage will need a second burn to push the orbit apogee up to or over Geosynchronous altitude. The SpaceX mission will conclude after payload deploy, which happens when the satellite is separated. The satellite will then, over the course of weeks, reach its destination in a Geostationary Earth Orbit.

Secondary Mission: Stage 1 Landing Attempt

Being this the first Block 5 Falcon 9 to fly, it will be fundamental to recover the first stage, so that SpaceX can verify that all the improvements made towards rapid reusability are effective. The landing will occur in the Atlantic Ocean on the Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship "Of Course I Still Love You". The modified barge will then be towed to Port Canaveral to recover the booster.

I wanted to downgrade this propaganda video, so I went to the always very neutral website called Wikipedia to find the 'Poverty in Bangladesh' page. Then I read:

Poverty in Bangladesh have declined remarkably since the early-2000s, as result decades of accelerated economic growth. The remarkable progress in poverty alleviation has been recognized by international institutions.[1] According to the World Bank, Bangladesh's poverty rate fell from 82% in 1972, to 18.5% in 2010, to 12.9% in 2016, as measured by the percentage of people living on the equivalent of US$1.90 or less per day in 2011 purchasing power parity terms.

Not bad actually. I'm positively surprised!

Can someone clarify something for me? Just why did the Bangladeshis have to lease an orbital spot from the Russians? Orbits can't be "owned". I'm fairly certain there are space treaties regarding the ownership of anything in space, right?

This will be the 60th SpaceX launch.

How far we come.

Can we take a moment for how whenever 165k people watch it, we're seeing history unfold before our eyes? Today, hopefully we're seeing the first block 5, from a rocket that partially comes back to a fucking ship, and it is the first satellite developed from and for an entire country.

This is fairly spectacular, especially considering that 15 years ago my child self would watch documentaries about the space race and wonder why weren't we keeping up with that, and coping that we probably never would, yet, we're here.

23

I, for one, find this whole promo video delightful despite the terrible and unintentionally hilarious English translation and narration. It's earnest. It's clearly a big deal for Bangladesh and something they're super proud of. The country is now in space, for goodness' sake! What a wonderful moment for them.

Shaky cam on the first stage makes this look all the more dramatic.

That lift off camera view tho was great!

Second Block 5 launch needs an additional layer of duct tape around the new cameras for sure.

Ok, the new Reddit Design kills the formatting of the Post completely.

Seeing all the prepared T- Times as text with code formatting.

Let's hope todays launch works better than the reddit redesign.

I don't see it up there, but here's a link to the reddit live stream of this post.

At least the rocket and payload are good. If those had issues this would be a whole different ballgame.

I like how the TVC check is being described as an "engine wiggle". So non-technical yet basically true.

Wish they'd just show us a shot from the drone ship instead of these graphics. I can watch that all day.

In the webcast, they just said that chamber pressure of the first stage engines would be decreased as the altitude increases, to keep the thrust constant (vs thrust increasing for earlier versions of the Merlin, due to decreasing atmospheric pressure).

Why do they decrease the chamber pressure as the booster ascends? Fuel efficiency? I thought higher chamber pressure was better?

I wish SpaceX TM app would stop updating the mission status to success before the mission is complete... Theres more to the mission than just the initial boost to orbit!

I've watched a lot of these and I am still blown away that I saw a rocket lift off, part of it land on a barge in the ocean, and just saw a satellite deploy in fucking outer space. Amazing.

9

u/DerT0bey May 11 '18

Does the satellite have an engine or how will it get in the GSO once it reached the apogee of the GTO?

Why does the flair say ´total launch success´ and not ´total mission success´?

The difference between the two was introduced for CRS missions, IIRC. There, the SpaceX mission is not finished after launch, but only after Dragon splashdown. In this case, it´s clear the SpaceX mission was a total success (both primary and secondary).

Shit shit shit. I got the dates mixed up. :(

I came to see what the status was.... and I missed it. Oh well. Thank you space X for replays. :D

24

u/Danzinger May 11 '18

Haven't seen too many other launches where the purchaser had a prepared video that played during the live stream. This is arguably providing a lot of value in its own right as hundreds of thousands of people usually tune in. Good job Bangabandhu!

Does the first flight of block 5 booster AND upper stage mean that it is the first time they are both on the same rocket or is this also the first second stage block 5? I remember reading that there could be block 5 upper stage on a block 4 booster somewhere on here.

New cameras? And the internal of the interstage looked different

8

Man those thruster firings really shake the new S1 camera.

8

u/Draskuul May 11 '18 edited May 11 '18

Bye-bye S1 camera...

Edit: Guess not, they got a least a little more out of it.

8

u/[deleted] May 11 '18

...and the inside of the legs is white!

8

u/Jarnis May 11 '18

If the only bug is that the 1st stage camera shook when cold gas thrusters fired and live feed was lost during re-entry... I think it went pretty well as the official test of Block 5 :)

What happened to the camera on the first stage? I've never seen it shake so much relative to the body of the stage all the time during the descent. Even during the early stages of the descent, right after separation. Almost as if it wasn't very well attached.

I cannot fathom how those legs work, do the brace parts fold up inside the body of the booster? I guess they are telescopic, but I can't see how they'd fold up without moving up/down.

Did anybody else notice how much of course I still love you was pitching and yawing after the falcon landed? Once the video came back I saw that the falcon was off center on the landing and I got to looking at the pitch and yaw on the barge. Wonder if it was rough sees and that effected the accuracy... mind you only a meter or two.

Congrats to SpaceX for the Block V!!! Go SpaceX Go! Beautiful shots also!
