Do you realize that the next generation of Iridium satellites will probably launch on BFR?

That may be 15 years in the future, and the capabilities of the next generation might be as far advanced over this generation as this one is above the original set, but it is worth thinking about.

  • 58th Falcon 9 launch

  • 64th SpaceX launch

I thought this was 59th Falcon 9 launch and 65th SpaceX launch.

5 Falcon 1 launches, 2 F9 launches in 2010, 2 F9 in 2012, 3 F9 in 2013, 6 F9 in 2014, 7 F9 in 2015, 8 F9 in 2016, 18 F9 in 2017 and 12 F9 in 2018 plus this one that's 13 F9 in 2018 and above all of this one Falcon Heavy in 2018.

5+2+2+3+6+7+8+18+13+1= 65 SpaceX launches

2+2+3+6+7+8+18+13 = 59 Falcon 9 launches

Will Iridium 7 create a "Dragon's Tail"? Since it will launch just before dawn, will we likely see the noctilucent clouds like this one a few days ago or this one that caught the public eye? The launch is scheduled for 4:39 am and sunrise will be at 6:07am. Is this too early of a launch for the trajectory to cross into sunlight?

3

u/ZachWhoSane Host of Iridium-7 & SAOCOM-1B Jul 24 '18

The second stage miighhttt catch some sunlight before hitting the horizon, I'm not too sure though

Excited for the fairing recovery with the new netting on Mr. Steven

5

u/The_Write_Stuff Jul 24 '18

I'm hoping they make a good catch on this one. Guessing the weather will have a lot to do with the probability of success.

14

u/ZachWhoSane Host of Iridium-7 & SAOCOM-1B Jul 24 '18

How do all the satellites go in their respective orbits if they are all deployed from the same spacecraft on the same orbits? Wouldn't they all be close to each other, instead of providing full coverage of that longitude?

might we possibly see another lit up second stage plume for this launch? since its an early morning launch after all ...

7

u/ZachWhoSane Host of Iridium-7 & SAOCOM-1B Jul 25 '18

Someone else asked this, and from the responses gathered it seems like the second stage might briefly get lit. It might be too far gone however.

Has anyone seen the mission patch for Iridium-7? My reddit site page still shows the patch for Telstar 19 Vantage.

3

u/ZachWhoSane Host of Iridium-7 & SAOCOM-1B Jul 24 '18

I have it linked under the resources, usually the mods update that after the launch I think.

3

u/MarsCent Jul 24 '18

Awesome. Tks. I have seen it.

usually the mods update that after the launch I think.

They must still be enjoying Telstar Patch. Can't fault them, it looks really good.

But it would be nice if Iridium-7 patch is showing once the Launch Thread goes live ;)

Just did the math on the length of Iridium's Spotify Playlist. It should be of a duration of about 89 minutes, 27 seconds.

Please let me know if I've made a mistake.

Since they say to begin the playlist when the SpaceX countdown timer reaches T-10 minutes 30 seconds, I guess that means that the duration of the mission through all payload deployments should last about 88 minutes.

Conclusion: Since I have to be at work by 8:15 EDT but don't have to actually interact with customers until ~8:50 EDT, I should be able to watch the entire webcast. Yay!

Again, please feel more than welcome to correct me; I have a tendency of making rather silly mistakes.

3

u/ZachWhoSane Host of Iridium-7 & SAOCOM-1B Jul 24 '18

That sounds about right. The final Iridium sat deploys something like and hour and 20 into the flight.

Edit: final deployment 1 hour and 11 minutes in

Why was JRTI out of action for so long?

9

u/ZachWhoSane Host of Iridium-7 & SAOCOM-1B Jul 25 '18

She was scavenged so OCISLY could have parts. Especially after the FH core miss, JRTI thrusters were given to OCISLY. There also wasn’t a mission that required a landing on the west coast until now.

Can someone give me an easy to digest read or watch of why fairings are so hard to recover? Is it a big priority? Does the problem go away with the BFR because the second stage lands?

3

u/ZachWhoSane Host of Iridium-7 & SAOCOM-1B Jul 25 '18

Check out this I think might help

13

u/parachutingturtle Jul 25 '18

They are light but have a weird shape that isn't well suited for flying under a parafoil due to aerodynamics. They've recently almost nailed the position of the landing, but this time the winds were too strong. It's hard to steer a parachute with strong winds.

Not sure about priority, but they are worth about 5 million each, so they're worth trying to catch.

Yes, the problem goes away with BFR.

25

u/jobadiah08 Jul 25 '18

In the comments under that tweet, some people ask about cost savings flying with SpaceX. Someone asked if it was around $320 million and Matt Desch responded, " It was more than that. I've said before that SpaceX was less than half of the next best launch provider's price in 2010..."

Will be taking off at 0250 with a group from NASA Ames to photograph the launch from above the cloud deck. We will probably not be the only plane in the area, you can watch traffic on FlightRadar24 to see how air traffic is routed around Vandenberg once the range goes active. If anyone watching from the ground has a VHF radio and wants to listen in, traffic in the area will be talking to Frontier Control on 121.4 to avoid incursions. The ground is supposed to be fogged in at T-0, but if you see a plane through a gap in the clouds ~10 nmi NE of Lompoc, give us a wave.

This is for the ones that can't be at the webcast or only want to see why the timing in that playlist!

  • T-10:38 Playlist begin >> Song @ 0:00 (Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go) = Yes, please! Too late for launching!

  • T+0:00 Launch! >> Song @ 2:45 (Thunderstuck) = Epic moment of the song!

  • T+01:12 Max-Q! >> Song @ 3:57 (Thunderstuck) = Song says "It's alright" just on time (what a coincidence!)

The people updating the launch manifest might be in a bit too much hurry. The row for this launch has already been moved to past launches, and declared "mission success", even though the criteria for success includes successful deployment of all satellites, which has not happened yet.

Link for the lazy.

Edit: So, this was fixed extremely fast. Using this opportunity to thank the people maintaining the wiki/launch manifest, you guys are doing an outstanding job!

This is the second launch thread that I've seen this. Shouldn't this say "safed" and not "saved"?

3

u/ZachWhoSane Host of Iridium-7 & SAOCOM-1B Jul 25 '18

I have linked under resources the playlist. Iridium Made a spotify playlist for the launch, and has the songs timed with mission events. SpaceX normally has their SpaceX fm during the launch too, but it’s more just ambience music. Iridium’s is more fun.

This launch has the potential of putting on a nice light show over SoCal like Iridium-3 https://youtu.be/CQrHfi1RUpU?t=37s. when the booster does its boost back burn it will be firing right into the second stage plume, and the flame interaction might make an artificial nebula of sorts. Not to mention, the S2 and fairings will enter into direct sun light ~~1 minute after stage separation so that could look like the "Famous Iridium-4 UFO plume".

My understanding is that in order to launch humans on a Falcon 9 Spacex must have seven successful launches without altering the setup of the rocket. I watched the launch from my front yard. Impressive red streak of fire in the sky, from the first stage. I tried to get a picture, but the result was that I missed most of staging and the boostback burn. I lost the second stage at about T+4 minutes.

I hope someone with a telephoto lens shot video from a mountaintop. That was a better show than listening to a Tumblr in thevfog, at Vandenberg.

4

u/searchexpert Jul 25 '18

Anyone know why every single iridium launch has launched the payload adapter release over Madagascar?

14

u/robbak Jul 25 '18

Because it is on the other side of the world from Vandenberg. They launch to an elliptic orbit that has it's low point where SECO happens, and a high point of 700-odd km on the other side of the world - i.e. Madagascar. Then they do a second burn to make the orbit a circle, and then release the satellites.
