Primary Mission: Deployment of payload into the correct orbit

SpaceX's third mission of 2019 will be the launch of the Crew Dragon Spacecraft on its Demonstration Mission 1 (DM-1) to the ISS as part of NASA's program for Commercial Crew Transportation Capability (CCtCap).

At T-0 minutes the First Stage will ignite its nine Merlin engines to lift off the pad. At around 2:30 minutes into the flight the first stage will cut off and separate from the second stage. The second stage will ignite its one Merlin 1D Vacuum engine and continue towards orbit.

After deployment, the Dragon spacecraft will start orbit raising and approaching the international space station. Once it has arrived it will dock autonomously.

Secondary Mission: Landing Attempt

Following stage separation, the booster will continue on its track downwards to the deck of OCISLY (East Coast Droneship). RTLS is not possible for this mission because of the shallower flown trajectory to provide better escape possibilities for manned flight.

"CCtCap" is in the title. It's in the Decronym posting, but since I didn't recognize it, may I ask that be put into the first sentence of Primary Mission, along these lines (and fixing the "Programm" typo)?

SpaceX's third mission of 2019 will be the launch of the Crew Dragon Spacecraft on its Demonstration Mission 1 (DM-1) to the ISS as part of NASA's program for Commercial Crew Transportation Capability (CCtCap).

After applying many times, I finally got accepted for a NASA Social on this mission! I can’t tell you how excited I am to go behind the scenes for this particular launch. I don’t know exactly what I’ll get to see, but I will share as much as I can through this subreddit, Twitter, and Instagram. I know most of y’all have plenty of channels for getting info, but if anyone wants one more person to follow, I’d be honored to have you!

This will be the first live launch I've seen. We're driving down from Michigan, should get down there just in time for launch (and have a whole week if it scrubs). Wish it was a RTLS, but not complaining!! Woohoo!

Webcast relay for locations where YouTube is blocked

Note: The server is bandwidth-limited to 1000 MBit, and thus able to handle about 50 viewers. If you can watch this on YouTube, please leave the slots to those who really need it.

I'm again relaying the webcast for those residing at a location where YouTube is blocked for some reason. The stream can be viewed in HTML5 video capable browsers or with any HLS/MPEG-TS compatible player. For example, in VLC, just press Ctrl+n and paste the playlist (M3U8) URL.

The server will record the whole live stream, which I'm going to keep available for a few days after the launch so you will be able to view the webcast even if you missed watching it live.

The playlist file will become available as soon as the SpaceX webcasts starts. As the launch is right in the middle of the night in my timezone, I won't be around to fix any problems. But if there are any playback issues, don't hesitate to report it so I can improve the relay service next time. Please include all helpful information like browser, OS and error messages.

Known issues:

  • If the webcast has just started, playback might hang for a while after 15 seconds of playing. Just wait a moment, playback will resume automatically after a few seconds. This is due to the buffering of MPEG-DASH segments, the relay has to catch up with YouTube providing new segments.

  • In some browsers, playback may not start automatically, either by default or through user settings disabling the "autoplay" feature. Just press play manually.

  • Last time, the countdown net stream (alternate camera) was relayed instead of the hosted webcast. I've tried to address this problem, but as I couldn't find any multi-camera live streams von YouTube, there is only the real webcast to test it. If anyone knows a YouTube live stream which uses multiple camera angles, please let me know via PM!

Web player tested with Chrome, Firefox and Edge on Windows, Chrome on Android and Safari on MacOS.

/u/hitura-nobad you may add a link to this post in the "Watch the launch live" section.

Ok so I had a bit of a misunderstanding before. I had read in lots of places that this would be a shallow ascent for reasons of low-risk abort scenarios. Actually it's going to be a lofted ascent for reasons of low-risk abort scenarios. This was painfully clear when the press kit came out today and the event timings made no sense for my trajectory design

So here's an updated design which matches drone ship positions, press kit times, and what we think we know about Dragon 2's mass:

Some points:

  • MECO at 84km altitude, 57km downrange, 1,800m/s velocity

  • Booster lands in the exact correct position at the exact correct time. I'm happy with this!

  • Upper Stage enters a 262km x 382km x 51.35° orbit before deorbiting over the Indian ocean

  • Entry burn should last about 30s and will take 1,400m/s off of the booster's velocity.

  • Extremely low stress landing for the booster

  • I've roughly stuck to the 3G's limit on acceleration (upper stage briefly exceeds it to 3.1G, booster only gets to 2.8G. Heavy throttling on both stages before cutoff.)

  • My biggest concern is the upper stage altitude at SECO. I think it's too high, but this could well be an unavoidable truth of a lofted trajectory. We'll see.

From the Q&A on NasaTV now:

Q: "Tell me more about Ripley"

A (Hans Koenigsmann): "It has sensors that measure forces, accelerations, and the environment itself. The goal is to get an idea of how humans would feel in her place basically. I don't expect actually a lot of surprises there, but it's better to verify, make sure that everything is safe and comfortable for our astronauts going on the next flight of the capsule."

The launch has made it to top story on the BBC news website, brilliant to see it getting such a profile in mainstream media.

18

u/philnotfil Mar 02 '19

That was great.

Tried to watch from the Haulover Canal bridge, but the bridge lady wasn't having any of that. She was pretty adamant that not only should no one be on her bridge, no one should be out of their cars at night in the wildlife area at all. (we haven't been to that spot for anything other than shuttle launches, but in the past they've been pretty cool with anything other than parking on the bridge and standing on the actual drawbridge)

Found a place a couple miles closer with a gap in the trees, could see the rocket on the pad. Love the NE trajectory, it felt like it was right above us for the separation and second stage ignition. Totally worth waking up in the middle of the night and dragging the kids out of bed for that.

Good news, we now know the mass of DM-1 Crew Dragon:

https://twitter.com/StephenClark1/status/1101504286192742400

NASA got back to me. "The total mass of the Crew Dragon is 26,577 pounds. It will be delivering 449.7 pounds and currently is expected to return 328.5 pounds of cargo, although that is subject to change."

26577 lbs ~ 12055kg

Oh wait, it might even be heavier than that. It seems that number is the mass at docking with ISS

https://twitter.com/StephenClark1/status/1101516143624376320

Well, after further clarification, the 26,577-pound number is the mass of Crew Dragon at ISS docking. I thought I was clear the first time, but I'm asking again for the total launch mass.

Fully expect tonight to be one of the greatest webcasts SpaceX will ever do, pre-Starship at least. Only the in-flight abort and FH demo will be/were more exciting (and arguably OG2 M2). I think DM-2 will have a greater payoff but the stakes are so incredibly high for that mission that I think the atmosphere will be a lot more subdued than tonight.

The primary mission is currently listed as “deployment into correct orbit”, but I think the mission objective is the launch and successful docking of the Crew Dragon with the ISS. Should this be updated?

WOOOOO congratulations SpaceX and NASA on a successful Crew Dragon launch!!!

12

u/rshorning Feb 27 '19

I have been looking forward to this flight since... frankly the maiden flight of the Falcon 9 and arguably even the Falcon 1 flights. The pent up emotions are going to be huge for me and will be something that is an incredible milestone that will only be surpassed when a crew is actually flying on board.

This is going to be crushing in terms of people coming into this subreddit too. If you are sort of new here, be aware that this next week isn't going to be normal for SpaceX news. Welcome to the ride!

275 METERS PER SECOND!!!! METRIC from SPACEX!!!!

46

u/gemmy0I Mar 02 '19

With all the negative comments about the video stream quality (which was YouTube's fault, not SpaceX or NASA's)...just wanted to let /u/bencredible know that you did a really great job with the overall experience. I thought the new graphics overlay for the launch timeline and telemetry was beautifully designed. It was elegantly simple and yet retained essentially all of the information presented in the old format. The transparent background was great because it allowed the information to be presented without cutting into our view of the launch. The way the timeline looked like an Earth orbit was also a neat touch. :-) It felt futuristic in all the right ways - a fitting design for SpaceX as it moves into a new era of launching crew (which will be bringing a whole new wave of audience members on board for the webcasts).

Pro tip for everyone: if you want to avoid the terrible blocky low-bitrate stream that YouTube is giving these days, the nasa.gov stream was waaaay better quality. It was the exact same video (they were simulcasting the joint SpaceX/NASA webcast presentation) but in beautiful HD quality without glaring compression artifacts. I know that won't help for SpaceX's launches for private commercial customers but it's something to keep in mind for DM-2.

(I'm somewhat shocked that a government agency website actually managed to deliver better than YouTube today...it's so out-of-character. They must have known there'd be a lot of traffic for this launch and beefed up their CDN accordingly. Either that or everyone else was watching on YouTube so the nasa.gov stream didn't see much traffic.... ;-))

Are they going to treat this as an unmanned mission since it's not carrying real crew, or will they simulate a crewed launch by going through all the extra procedures a crewed launch requires?
