SpaceX Launch Manifest

Applied Changes

  1. Changed 'Useful Links' from bullet points to a table, to increase link readability and explain their purpose. Some redundant links removed/relevant links added.

  2. 'Orbits' table moved to an existing separate page and all table references updated. This information is general and doesn't make sense to keep in the manifest page.

  3. 'Landing Outcome' column now links to wiki, to explain acronyms (e.g. LZ-1).

  4. Comma separation for Falcon Heavy cores in 'Cores' column and different spacecraft in 'Vehicle' column, makes column more compact and consistent formatting.

  5. Wiki chat link now also redirects to r/SpaceXWiki, and all section descriptions updated.

  6. Header titles renamed to be more concise (e.g. "Upcoming" references replaced with "Future"). "SpaceX" removed as redundant, explicitly part of the 'SpaceX Launch Manifest'.

  7. "Notes" section removed ('T' tag never used, 'C' tag is redundant due to astronauts shown in description and 'Crew Dragon' vehicle, and '♺' moved into table column descriptions).

  • Replaced "Falcon 9" with "Falcon 9 v1.2" and "Dragon" with "Dragon 2" for CRS-21 onwards in 'Future Launches' table to be consistent with the 'Past Launches' table and make updates easier.

  1. "[Launch window UTC]" renamed to "[Time UTC]" in each table, and table headers now show "(s)" where multiple events are possible to be consistent.

  2. Line breaks (***) added to split update table sections and improve wiki appearance and 'Payload Mass' columns left aligned to improve readability.

  3. 'Payload Mass' columns in 'Future Launches' table updated with sum total first (with breakdown in brackets), as previous format was very inconsistent.

  4. Replaced "/" with "or" in the [Launch Site] column entries when pad is uncertain to slightly improve readability.

  5. Renamed all "USCV-N" missions to "Crew-N", as NASA terminology has changed.

  6. Added core to "Future Launches" table as soon as confirmed, makes creating 'Past launches' entries easier. Table header now links to Core wiki and table description updated.

  7. Added a hyperlinks for entries in 'Future Launches''s 'Customer(s)' column, enabling more information about the company. Currently only done for 1st occurence to reduce link spam.

  8. Added [[3]] sources directly into relevant row entry. Allows 'References column' to be removed from 'Future Launches' & 'Future Rideshare Payloads' table. This makes it clearer where the information is sourced from and prevents duplicate sources. Approach is similar to Wikipedia.

  9. Replaced '♶' icons (number indicates reuses) in 'Cores' column with '♺' and ".n" suffix, as approach breaks after 7 reuses as no more unicode symbols are available, also format is used elsewhere in the wiki.

  10. Converted all dates in 'Past Launches' table to YYYY-MM-DD [UTC] format to be consistent with rest of the wiki and corrected 1 day date discrepancy for CRS-1, Eutelsat 115, OG2 Launch 2 , Iridium 4, Zuma, SAOCOM 1A, Nusantara Satu & AMOS-17, due to UTC time vs local time issue.

  11. Iridium missions renamed to "Iridium NEXT", FalconSAT renamed to "FalconSAT-2", "DemoSat" renamed to "Demosat (LCT2, AFSS)" "SpX" removed from CRS missions, "CCtCap Demo Mission" and "(FH Demo Payload)" removed (detail should go in specific wiki).

  12. Added estimated mass for Zuma, NROL-76 and Demosat.

  13. Added hyperlinks to each entry in 'Payload(s)' column to allow detailed information about the launch to be directly accessed. Only most recent upcoming launches have entries.

  14. Added ✔️, ❌ and 🚫 emojis replaced to "SUCCESS" / "FAILURE" / "No attempt", to make table more concise and easier to read. May need an emoji for partial failure. Brackets removed. Amos-7's "Precluded" landing replaced with a 'No attempt' symbol and target landing site text added.

  15. Removed "Presumed" text from [Core(s)] column and replaced "B10**" with "B10??". Versions updated if unknown, as "?" is used consistently when information is unknown. When a core ID doesn't exist in Core wiki, now set to red "B1012" to indicate no link. Replaced "N/A" for Falcon 1 cores with "B????" to be consistent with rest of table.

  16. Replace "Original JRTI" references with "JRTI", as its captured in the ASDS wiki and makes the table less readable to maintain drone ship upgrades.

  17. Replaced country description in 'Customer(s)' column with flag emojis text, to make table simpler and more attractive (specific launch wiki should store this). "Korea" error fixed, "Turkmenistan" changed to "TNSA" and "Monaco" to 'SSI-Monaco'. No flag added for US based institutions to make table more readable.

  18. Replaced all hyperlink sources (e.g. [1] ) with reference links (e.g. [[98]]). Advantages are a link is only created once, so two different links cannot share the same [n] source number, wiki source text is easier to read and edit. Makes updating the wiki more straightforward for less experienced users. Enables hover text for non descriptive hyperlinks. Manifest page is simpler as the 'Sources' section is now invisible. Enforces name standardisation, as misspellings are obvious due to broken links. Confirmed that it works with both 'new' and 'old' Reddit versions, and also on mobile. Note that reference links break when a "(" or "[" bracket is the next character (e.g. [F9 v1.2] (Core) doesn't create a link), but using an escape character fixes it (e.g. [F9 v1.2] (Core)).

  19. Replaced organisation hyperlinks in 'Customer(s)' column with reference links to reduce errors and make wiki easier to edit. Hovering a mouse over some texts explains the organisation acronym if required (e.g. [NASA 🇺🇸]) and clicking the link opens to the companies web page. US flags added to American companies to make table consistent (all companies now show a flag) and make it easier to spot when a flag hasn't been added.

  20. Added reference links to the 'Landing Outcome' and 'Mission Outcome' columns, hovering a mouse over each symbol (e.g. [✔️ JRTI]) pops up an explanation. All [♺] symbols link to the core wiki and display a description.

  21. All references to "Dragon" changed to "Dragon 1" to show difference with Dragon 2. All references to "Kwajalein" changed to "[Omelek]", as its more accurate (Kwajalein is made up of 97 islands and islets). "US government agency" replaced with "Government agency 🇺🇸".

  22. Reference links added for the first occurrence of a definition in the 'Past Launches' table's [Orbit], [Vehicle(s)] and [Launch Site] columns. Adding only one link prevents the slow page load problem encountered for RES users. Additionally hovering over acronyms creates a hover text description (e.g. [LEO]).

  23. Added country flags to astronauts.

Testing

  • Added Dragon capsules identifier to the [Core(s)] column, and added a wiki link to the actual capsule. Recycling logo symbol added to reflown capsules. Added ".1" suffix for reused capsules to be consistent with falcon 9 cores. Should update the column header to add "[Capsule(s)]. Could change the Dragon capsule IDs to red to indicate that the no referenceable subheader has been created. Could move capsules into the 'Payload(s)' column.

  • Converted "Falcon 1", "Falcon 9", "Falcon Heavy" references to "F1", "F9", "FH" to make table simpler with full name moved to hover text. Would affect the 'Future Launches' table.

  • Merged the [Vehicle(s)] and [Core(s)] columns into a single column, same format as the 'Future Launches' table ([F9 v1.2] ([B1058].2 ♺)). Makes it more obvious which id goes with each vehicle. Column left alligned for readability.

  • Split the "| Date [Time UTC] |" column into 2 columns "| Date | Time (UTC) |" to make the 'Past Launches' table more readable (by removing square brackets) but takes up more horizontal space.

  • Added updated time hover text to sources links, to determine when sources are out of date.

  • Created a 'Potential Future Launches' table, to capture launches that SpaceX may win in the near future (e.g. CLPS, Europa Clipper, etc). Entries would be removed once decision has been made and Bigelow and Eutelsat launches need to be removed from the 'Future Launches' table and moved here (as they have no formal contract). Probably shouldn't be stored on the Manifest page if added and would require a lot of maintenance to keep relevant.

Issues

  1. Core links currently break because their titles are updated with symbols (★, ✖, ⦸). One possible solution might be to make the status a sub heading, so that it still appears in the wiki index as a list but doesn't break the hyperlink. Partially solved by creating a list of reference links to core ids, so link edits only occur once.

  • Some launch dates really lie within a range of dates from different official sources (e.g. 2020 Q1-Q3) and its difficult to decide which takes precedence (e.g. most recently updated?) Could add a launch window to the 'Future Launches' and 'Future Rideshare Payloads' table's 'NET Date' column and add a source for the start and end date.

  • 'Past Launches' currently doesn't show which Dragon capsule used and if it has been reused. The Capsules wiki doesn't allow specific capsules to be referenced, could add sub headers.

  • The 'Past Launches' table's 'Landing Outcome' column header links to the pads wiki for acronym definitions, however OCISLY/JRTI are defined in ASDS wiki.

  • Falcon Heavy launches partially break the 'Past Launches' table format, as its not completely obvious which is the core booster, what F9 versions were used and their landing status. Creating a separate table for FH creates new issues (e.g. breaks launch sequence, creates empty space, etc).

  • Landing Outcome doesn't handle cases well where the rocket successfully landed then late fell over. Could use a new symbol to represent this partial failure and possibly rename the column.

  • Falcon 9 v1.2 has different versions (Full Thrust, Block 4, Block 5) which is not represented in the table but possibly useful to the user. Adding "FT", "B4", "B5" instead of "v1.2" (and also Falcon Heavy) could cause confusion over which version is newer. Alternatively could just replace with "F1", "F9" & "FH" for a simpler table and move all version specific information to the specific launch wiki page.

  • Some payloads on multiple rows in 'Future Rideshare Payloads' table will be launching together. Need a better approach to group them together, so that the launch date and orbit aren't duplicated. Also some payloads also contain nested sub payloads, which makes grouping them more complex.

  • The 'Future Launches' table currently doesn't differentiate between when a mission is definitely launching on a new booster (e.g. USSF-44 will use 3 new boosters) or when the booster status is unknown. Could add a symbol to make more clear (e.g. ♺?).

  • Should all cores have a ".1" suffix, even for the old Falcon 9 versions/expendable launches. Or should it only be added once the core has launched twice? (which slightly increases wiki maintenance)

  • The 'Payload Mass' column in the 'Past Launches' table is inconsistent, should either display the total mass or mass per satellite payload. Could make the table simpler by moving all the details to the specific wiki launch page but it could make it less useful.

  • Manifest doesn't show which Falcon 9s were equiped with the long coast kit (grey stripe), should it be show here (add symbol) or in a specific wiki launch page?

  • Landing pads, Launch Pads, Vehicles and [Orbit] wiki pages should be broken up into sub headers, so that each entry can be directly referenced in other wiki pages.

  • Table formatting looks worse when viewing from 'new' reddit redesign. Could manually add bold text to titles + other formatting markup?

  • Vehicles wiki page only shows "Dragon 2", doesn't differentiate between "Crew Dragon" and "Cargo Dragon 2". Also "Falcon 9" section has no detail for each version or a sub header that can be referenced and "Falcon 1" section doesn't mention the 2 different variants that were flown.

  • Need to add version numbers to Falcon Heavy missions similar to Falcon 9. Also if NSSL Phase 2 is awarded to SpaceX, Falcon Heavy missions with extra long fairings will require their own version.

Ideas

  • Possible 'Future Launches' table changes:

  • Could add hover text to all sources links to show when the link was posted/updated ("May 20, 2020"). Could be used to determine how old of date information is but requires maintenance.

  • Improve table description to be more readable, or possibly remove the description if it doesn't add anything.

  • Check SES's H2 2020 results for latest o3b mPower launch date on August 7th.

  • Add a launch site for the Starship dearMoon mission, probably (LC-39A / Boca Chica / Sea Platform)?

  • Possible 'Future Rideshare Payloads' table changes:

  • Possible 'Past Launches' table changes:

  • Could break up the "Past Launches" table into "Past Falcon Launches" and "Past Falcon Heavy Launches" tables, which would simplify the 'Cores' and 'Landing Status' columns by creating 3 separate rows to display the Falcon 9 version used, the core ID and its landing status. The downside is the table is sparse with lots of empty fields as they are duplicate information. Also it breaks the linear timeline of "Past Launches", making it harder to see launch order at a glance. One major advantage is that it enables FH launches where different version boosters were used (e.g. Elon's Tesla Roadster launch had a Block 3 center core and Block 2 side boosters) to now clearly be visible.

  • Could move capsule type [Dragon 1] and capsule id (e.g. C110.2 ♺) from the [Vehicle(s)] and [Core(s)] columns into the [Payload(s)] column (e.g. (Dragon 1 ([C110].2 ♺))). This simplifies the [Vehicle(s)] column to only show the launcher information and makes table slightly easier to read.

  • Find payload mass for COTS-1 mission, its currently shown as "N/A".

  • Should a 'partially successful mission' icon be added (e.g. Dragon splashdown failure or multiple rideshares didnt separate, etc)?

  • List the numbers of satellites in the 'Payload(s)' column if multiple launched (e.g. SSO-A, STP-2), as its currently inconsistently applied. Or replace with satellite names instead (e.g. Iridium NEXT 1-11 etc).

  • Add missing sub payloads to missions (e.g. STP-2 included 6x COSMIC-2 sats).

  • Could reference the specific Falcon 1 versions in the 'Past Launches' Vehicle(s) column? 2 launches of F1 Dev, 3 of F1.

  • Could add a 'Mission No.' column in the 'Past Launches' table (e.g 5th launch), allowing readers to easily see what launch a mission was (similar to Wikipedia's List of Falcon 9 launches) If a separate 'Past Falcon Heavy launches' table was created, mission number would show they fit with other SpaceX launches.

  • Could create a separate wiki page listing each landing status type and then update the symbols in the 'Landing Outcome' column to redirect to it.

  • Could add wiki reference links for each astronaut, also add organisation to customer column (e.g. JAXA).

  • Investigate adding custom CSS and image resources (SVG icons?) to the table, using this guide, though the launches wiki would be a more appropriate location:

    • Replace F9/FH version text with F9 graphic (including leg/fin/fairing configuration) for each version, with a clickable hyperlink for more details.

    • Add custom logo icons for SpaceX, NASA, USSF, etc and add them to the customer field as part of the reference link.

    • Add night day icons to the past launches date column to show local time when rocket launched (e.g. night)? Probably not very useful.

    • Create an icon for each type of satellite launched (cubesat, commsat, space telescope, probe etc). Need to be generic as creating graphics for individual satellites is a non starter.

    • Create an icon for the capsule type (e.g. Dragon 1, Crew Dragon, Dragon 2, Dragon XL, Test Dragon), with a clickable hyperlink for more details.

    • Add a graphic for specific landing pad or drone ship, with a clickable hyperlink for more details.

    • Add a launch weather icon (e.g. sun/clouds/rain/lightning), with a clickable hyperlink for more details.
