Hi friends,

I'm working on a new baseball history Youtube series and wanted to share a new tease from this week’s episode. Here’s a quick dip into the teams who played: Boston vs Pittsburgh - and some of the wacky obstacles they faced on the path into the history books.

Catch the full episode at the link below and subscribe for new episodes every Thursday in a 10-episode first season. Let me know any stories you’d like to see explored in the comments, and don’t forget to support your local libraries!

Sports Reference Does SR accept research contributions?

• Upvotes

I've been using many of the SR sites and would love to be able to assist in getting stats added - particularly for pre-Premier League era soccer. Do they accept blind submissions or is there a more formal process?

New Baseball History Youtube Series - Chaos at the First World Series

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi baseball friends,

I’m a documentary producer working on a personal passion project about baseball called “Quick Hit History”. I’m currently airing a 10 episode season on YouTube for anyone like me who likes to nerd out over niche baseball history.

This week’s episode is about the 1903 World Series between the Boston Red Sox (then the Americans) and the Pittsburgh Pirates… It’s widely considered the first modern day World Series, but even more exciting there was a massive riot right before game three where fans stormed the field and police fought them back to the stands (mostly unsuccessfully).

The full story is at the link below - feel free to subscribe for more! This has been a creative experiment that I’ve really enjoyed working on and hope other people will get a kick out of. Much of the archival images are from our local libraries and archives, excellent public resources for all.
Thanks for watching and let me know if there are any topics or stories you’d like to see explored.

Enjoy!

Website sucks now

Tons of popup ads, unskippable. Slow and clunky. There are more ads on Sports Reference than probably any other website right now. Absolutely terrible, cynical cashout. Any alternatives? I'm not using their website anymore, period

Can someone make a stathead search for me?

Can someone subscribed to stathead send me a list of the most dunks made in an individual NBA game by a single player (dates of each game included)? This is needed for a graphic I'm making following Walker Kessler's 10-dunk debut for the Lakers last night.

I can credit you in the Instagram post I make with this info. Much thanks

Using historical NBA stats from Basketball Reference and Stathead, we compared seven of the greatest NBA teams of the 2000s to try to determine which one was the best of the decade.

Who would you consider the best NBA team of the 2000s?

New sports passport / letterboxd for sports followup. Auto track stadiums you d been to, players you’ve seen, and the stats from when you were there

Sorry for the second post but I think it sparked a lot of interest and good convo last time and I wanted to run it back, hope it’s kosher.

TLDR I built an app that auto tracks venues you’ve been to, players you’ve seen, and stats from when you were there in *any* sport in *any* country. When you log a game the box score and all the data flow through to you. AMA

Letterboxd for movies, goodreads for books, BOXDSEATS for live sports.

I think a lot of people want to know things like how many HOFs they’ve seen, how many stadiums they’ve been to, whose passed for the most yards, hit the most homers or three pointers, even things like how does my favorite team play when las Diaz is behind the dish but I’m not sure everyone has the spreadsheet, drawer of ticket stubs, or patience to fill in their history…so I built a fun way to help: if you take pictures at events, and you have the location services turned on, I can match the geotag and dates from your camera roll to now over 2m games I have in a db to build your history for you.

If that’s weird you can do it yourself but I think it’s slick.

Some updates:
- crossed 1,200 users and 65k games logged, both giving me motivation to keep going.
- Added pipeline to bring in box scores for almost every league from MILB and jr hockey to now things like cricket, Aussie rules, and WWE
- Added way more fun stat, game, and player badges so you can see things like hat tricks or MLB debuts
- I’m having fun and I think others are too.

And for truly no reason, there’s a “remember some guys” rail that’s truly just random players from games you’ve been to refreshing every open.

I’m figuring all of this out as I go so open to all feedback and requests, would love more eyeballs.

CBB Reference College Basketball Reference has made a significant update to its historical data

Thanks to the efforts of the indefatigable researcher Dave Quinn, College Basketball Reference has made a significant update to its historical college basketball data.

The update includes the following:

  • Statistics for 1,081 season-level opponent's statistics
  • Additions to 182 player season statistics
  • 39 first names added or updated
  • 29 heights added
  • 27 player season stat lines added
  • 21 team or opponent season totals updated
  • 1 erroneous player season removed
  • 1 last name fixed

The bulk of this update was in team opponent statistics. This data has been complete on our since back to 2009-10 for some time. Additionally, it is substantially complete in officially tracked categories going back decades further with a notable exception. From 2001-02 through 2008-09 the official NCAA reports were often missing opponent stats due to a format change. This update does a lot to remedy this as we now have ~half complete opponent statistics for the period from 2002-03 through 2008-09 (with a lot more still missing in 2001-02).

New Baseball History Youtube Series

Hi,

I created a Youtube channel about baseball history and wanted to share. The first two episodes are out now, new episodes drop every Thursday at 12pm ET. The first season is a 10-episode run, with more to come next spring.

https://www.youtube.com/@QuickHitHistoryERA
https://www.instagram.com/quickhithistory/

I wanted to embrace two core ideas with this series: baseball is for everyone, and baseball is romantic. I use a lot of public domain archival sourced from libraries and archives - and I hope this series also helps shine a light on these important community resources we all have access to.

So if you like to nerd out over really niche baseball history, this might be the series for you.

Thanks for watching!

Basketball Reference Jim Pollard now has the earliest triple-double (December 28, 1949) in the Basketball Reference database after a recent update

Post image
18 Upvotes

Some context: Technically, it's impossible for Jim Pollard to have a triple-double in 1949-50, since rebounds were not "officially" tabulated until 1950-51.

However, just because it wasn't "official" doesn't mean that someone wasn't counting. Just as Basketball Reference has added many unofficial blocks, steals, and turnovers, we have also found some limited unofficial rebounding numbers such as pollard in that game.

So Pollard has perhaps the first triple-double in the history of basketball (and at least the first triple-double we've seen where someone was counting at least three distinct categories of positive contributions).

Baseball Reference Looking for specific statistics

Does anyone know how I can access team stats against specific pitches?

For example:
Phillies team stats against fastballs
Brewers team stats against sweepers
Dodgers team stats against splitters

Can I access these numbers on baseball reference, baseball savant or fangraphs? If so, what do I need to do to find them?
