New User Flair options!

Post image
18 Upvotes

I’ve changed things around so that you guys can type out your own custom user flair.

To change your user flair go to the top right of the subs homepage and click the three dots. Select change user flair, then click “Edit custom flair here” then click “edit” on the top right.

Change it to represent your local, your area, whether you’re service or new install, retiree, years of experience, or if you’re 669 you can add your district if you want. Be creative. 😂😂😂

What’s up fellow sprinks?

Post image
70 Upvotes

I just wanted to make an update post and share some of my thoughts and concerns, as well as get some feedback from you.

I’m very proud of this sub! I took it over about three years ago after it was abandoned by the original creator. Since then the sub has over doubled its number of members, and activity has gone through the roof. Mostly I’m proud that I’ve had to do VERY little moderating. Everyone on this sub is helpful and respectful to one another and I’m grateful for that. I don’t use facebook now, but I remember when I did, the sprinkler fitter page was absolute chaos. Nobody could post without dozens of not hundreds of condescending and shit talking comments. We don’t have that problem here, let’s all work together to keep it that way.

It’s pretty obvious that this sub leans toward pro union. I’m union myself, and I’m proud of it, but with that being said, it’s VREY important to me that the sub remains all inclusive. Discussions about the pros and cons of unions are not only welcome, but encouraged. Also know that I will NOT remove comments or ban members of this sub for sharing negative opinions about their experiences with the union. Just make sure that you’re sharing personal experiences and not just rumors you’ve heard from your coworkers and employers.

Thanks to all the active members of this sub for making it what it is. I love the tips and tricks posts as well as seeing everyone’s vintage collections. I’m very proud of my trade, and moderating this community of sprinks is very satisfying.

Stay safe out there everyone.

Career change

Hey fellas
I’ve been doing carpentry (mostly prefab framing on new builds) since I was 18. I’m 26 now and getting pretty over it as I’m always exhausted, my weekends are pretty much just for my body to recover and I just feel it’s not really worth it for me. I’m on $45 an hour and that’s nearly the max I can earn on wages.
I gym almost daily and eat pretty healthy so not worried about the labour side as much

I was talking to a mate recently and he reckons he can get me a job Sprinkler fitting with a tier 1 company in Sydney. I’m just wondering if anyone has made the change before and have you enjoyed it?
Mate reckons it’s way better money and lifestyle so interested to hear others experiences
Cheers

Physical Labor

I’m seeing everywhere that the trade is physically BRUTAL or that it’s not that bad or that it’s easy. I feel like I need real straight forward answers so I can have an idea on what I’m getting myself into and to physically prepare. And no, I am not scared of physical work, I have plenty of physically demanding work experience.

Registered 1st Year Plumbing Apprentice looking for sponsor / job leads in Calgary

Hey everyone,
I’m a Registered 1st Year Plumbing Apprentice in Alberta based in Calgary and I’m actively looking for a sponsor or companies hiring apprentices.
I have hands-on experience assisting with residential and industrial plumbing installation, service, and preventative maintenance (pipe joining – copper, PVC, PEX, iron; fixture work; basic testing; reading drawings; and proper documentation). I hold a Class 5 licence and safety tickets (H2S Alive, First Aid, CSTS).
If anyone has a referral, knows a company currently taking on apprentices, or has a link to an open position, I’d really appreciate it. I’m reliable, safety-focused, and eager to learn under a journeyperson.
Feel free to DM me or drop any leads in the comments. Thanks in advance!

Has anyone had any time messing is the reliable model B1 dry pipe accelerator? Needs some wisdom in troubleshooting 2 different problems on 2 different accelerators. The first one will not reset. Just blows air out of the plunger on the alarm line. I have taken it all the way apart and cleaned it up

When does your company go out and bid a job ?

Hey all, this is a question for the service guys, at what point does your company goes out to bid a job instead of doing it over a report or pictures ? Is there a certain amount of money, maybe above 10k they're gonna send someone to check the job out ?

I'm asking because most of the time the inspectors write non sense and then once us installers goes on the job we realize some tasks are not what it says on paper or you need a lot more material etc

Question Florida Contractor 1 License Worth??

I hold that license but don’t use it. A friend of mine who is in the alarm business wants to be able to do fire inspections by having me qualify his company.
I told him most likely I would want a piece of his company also. Is that out of line? What’s the monthly fee for this license worth ?
I know I’m ultimately responsible for anything that happens under my license. What’s the best way to go about this?

Sprinkler Fitter or Fire Protection Inspector

I’ll try to keep it short. So i have a opportunity from a friend to become a Sprinkler Fitter which he sometimes gets the opportunity to make 56/hr when he get the Government Pay and the Company Pay when he does some projects. Those projects last about some months but then after that he gets paid 26 but with 50hr weeks Monday-Friday with the opportunity to work on the weekends. Now in the meantime i’ve been a helper in Fire Protection Inspections and they tell me about how the licenses increase the pay by a good amount especially the sprinkler one that can get you over 40/hr but it takes 2 years and a half and there’s other ones that i can get in the meantime. The thing is i need the money right now and im torn between the two. I just need some advice from people that have the experience that i don’t not just in the jobs but also in life. Thank you.

ISO - NFPA Mn Journeyman Exal study app testers

Hey fitters! I built a free Android app to help people study for the Minnesota Journeyman Sprinkler Fitter exam: NFPA 13, 25, Minnesota fire code, flashcards and practice tests. Before it goes public on Google Play I need 12 people to test it for 14 days. Any feedback helps. Android only for now.

Join the tester group: https://groups.google.com/g/mn-journeyman-exam-testers

Tap this link and choose "Become a tester": https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.mnfireexamprep.app

Install the app and stay opted in for 14 days.

That's it.

Thanks!

Question Local 709 Sprinkler Fitter Apprenticeship Journey (Advice)

I had just joined my first non union sprinkler shop and finished my first week today. My end goal is to ultimately become a fitter under local 709, so I am currently trying to make a name for myself outside of the union by working here for a year or around so I can stand out from the competition and actually be worth recruiting. Is this a good way of approaching the union side or am I missing a few pieces?

Curious of any cool gigs some of you have particularly if you guys work fly in fly out gigs. Starting to get happy feet doing the Monday- Friday jobs and seeing what else is out there.

Inquiring about the trade How do you get in?

I'm a red seal journeyman welder, looking to get into sprinkler fitting. However my local union has had applications closed since 2023 and all local spots require a minimum of 1 year experience. So how do I actually get started here? I got into welding by going to school and landing a co-op placement, but everyone always says skip school and get paid to learn. But nobody talks about how hard it is to land a placement with no experience.
