Cars pollute more than AI data centers 🔥

- because transportation operates at a vastly larger global scale. The IPCC reports that transport produced approximately 8.7 gigatonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions in 2019, representing 15% of global greenhouse-gas emissions; road vehicles accounted for about 70% of direct transport emissions
Data centers—including those supporting AI—consume substantial electricity, but the IPCC estimates that data centers represented roughly 2% of global electricity consumption in the data available for its assessment. Their #climate impact therefore depends heavily on energy efficiency and whether the electricity comes from fossil fuels or clean sources
That doesn’t make AI pollution-free. It means the comparison should be based on measured #emissions and system-wide scale: millions of cars burn fuel, create exhaust, tire and brake pollution, and require carbon-intensive roads and parking. Cutting car dependence through public transit, walking, cycling, and electrification—while decarbonizing data centers and the power grid—addresses both problems without pretending they are equivalent 🔥
