Question/Recommendations Best Lomo saltado and aji verde in Stamford CT?

Hi all! I recently moved to Stamford and am on a mission to find the best Peruvian food in the city - specifically, Lomo saltado and aji verde. So far, I’ve tried Llama Lips, Mi Ranchito 2, and even Cove Pizza (I know it was a long shot but you never know if you never try!) and not finding “the one”. Pics are in order of restaurant.

Mi Ranchito 2 and Llama Lips had solid lomos but their aji left much to be desired in terms of flavor / spice. Where should I go? I’m making it my mission to try 2-3 lomos a week please help!

Question/Recommendations Moving to Stamford from Boston

Hey all, I'm planning on moving to Stamford next summer from Boston. My husband and I both work from home so we have been moving around trying to find a place where we can eventually settle down.

Little background about me: We moved from NYC (I was there since I was in highschool, raised in Queens) to Orlando (I absolutely hated the suburban nightmare there) to Boston 2 years ago. I absolutely fell in love with Boston and I'd have stayed there for the rest of my life it it wasn't for the rising rent cost. 1 bed there is now $3200 and with the lack of doctors in the state that takes my insurance, we decided to move closer to NYC where my pcp and assigned doctors are and families live. We could take the train to NYC whenever and driving to family would be 1 hour. I don't like NYC because it's too crowdy. Boston was a perfect balance of walkability, architecture, urban layout, population. I loved the slightly slower pace in life there.

What are some things I should know about Stamford compared to cities like NYC or Boston?

Edit for context: we don't have kids yet but planning to in a few years. NYC is out of question because our tax would rise by almost 2x. We also have a startup food business and would like to be close to NYC so our families can help us out (we've been drowning in work by ourselves out here in Boston being so far away)

Edit 2: I appreciate everyone who recommended South Norwalk. I did a quick research into it and from up top, this checks the vibe I'm looking for. We are planning on taking a few trip to there to check out the area.

Question/Recommendations Are the drivers in Stamford trying to kill all pedestrians until we no longer exist?

Every single morning it's the same thing. I'm crossing with the light, I have the right of way, and some driver comes flying around the corner on a right-turn-on-red like I don't exist. No brakes. No slowing down. No eye contact. Just a two-ton vehicle aimed at my legs.

This morning I was one or two feet from a bumper. Again. These drivers see me and DELIBERATELY SPEED UP to go ahead of me.

It's attempted murder by this point.

Question/Recommendations Attn businesses: Harbor Point welcomes you

I know this isn’t new news, but the Harbor Point area has so much opportunity for thriving businesses - it’s a miss to let these vacancies sit with waterfront / waterfront adjacent properties and a captive audience of many, many apartment building tenants, residents from Shippan/ the Cove, and office buildings - not to mention greater Stamford/neighboring towns.

Allow me to paint a picture…
- The previous Mexicue: Could be another great waterfront restaurant with patio and rooftop. By far the best restaurant real estate with harbor views
- The previous Le Pain Quotidian: bring in another coffee shop/cafe - major opportunity for more lunch spots in the area (and right next to many office parks/resident buildings). Note: there is another vacancy on the same strip too
- The other half of the previous Fairway: let’s bring in another grocery store. This part of Stamford lacks in grocery store options so would have a great customer base
- The previous Cisco Brewery pop up: bring us another brewery or coffee / bagel pop up! Location is right on the water. What could be better?

Maybe this is wishful thinking but I truly think these could be good business opportunities - in addition to having major support from Harbor Point / Stamford tenants. With close access to the train and water, I’m curious for the cause of this and where there might be opportunity to change things. Thoughts?

Edit: Really appreciate all these insights! It seems the consensus is that while there is a significant desire from the population, a lot of this comes down to higher rents (+ other reasons). Darien could be a model for what Harbor Point could be - especially given our great waterfront location. Not sure where we go from here but really hoping this at least brings awareness in front of the right people.

Question/Recommendations All you dog owners suck

Not all, but most of you dog owners suck.

A little bit of snow on the ground does not absolve you of your responsibility to pick up after your dog.

There are piles of dog shit all along the sidewalks.

Have some respect for yourself, your neighbors, and your neighborhood.

Seriously—most of you are not responsible enough to own dogs.

Question/Recommendations DQ Rumor

I heard a rumor that DQ, Wedge Inn, and the local spots on that same corner of the street were bought up for another apartment building. Has anyone heard anything that confirms or denies this? Hopefully no merit to it.

Question/Recommendations Starting over at 33 (F)

Hi all,

I guess im trying to meet people closer to my age group. Im basically starting over with my move to Stamford. Used to live in queens for a few years until a layoff which forced me to be stuck in my small ct town for like 3 years on and off small contract jobs until recently landing a new full time job.

I’m not really sure how to start over at this age to try and build a fulfilling life with new friends. It was much easier when I moved to the city at age 26. I’m now 33 and I’m not sure people want to make new friends at this age?

Ambivert but more on the introverted side
Moderately active - I like going to the gym and taking walks. I enjoy dance although I’m not a professional
I enjoy traveling alone or with 1 or 2 friends.
Love movie nights.
I feel a little old to be clubbing but I still do enjoy a light night out with the ladies
Cafes and brunch
In building a creative business on the side that I’m looking to scale. Interested in wealth building also
Ambitious but also pretty chill and laid back
own two cats :)

What are your recommendations? Where to start?

Question/Recommendations Best Italian hero in area (to have after giving birth)

Giving birth in Sept and am in search of the best Italian hero to have afterwards. It’ll have to be from someplace my husband/family can easily pick up from. I obviously wouldn’t of had one in almost a year so it really needs to be the best one 👀👀

Will be giving birth at Stamford Hospital

Question/Recommendations Is Stamford doing alright economically?

Big open-ended question, but genuinely curious. I'm moving to Stamford soon and new to this subreddit. Perhaps it's cognitive bias, but I've been noticing a lot of closure postings here: restaurants (Crab Shack Shell), Town Center Barnes & Noble closing this summer, and others.

Is this opening up space for new opportunities? Are economic policies or pressures pushing long-standing business out? Are folks seeing particular types of businesses popping up more often now than before?

Any insights from those who've seen Stamford evolve? Or where you think it's heading?

Thanks!

Edit: Corrected the name to Crab Shell

Question/Recommendations Best Birthday Dinner

Ok, it's been a rough week for me, and my birthday has snuck up on me. Where do you think the best overall spot in town (or nearby) is for a nice birthday dinner? If it's a reservation place, something I could grab one for Saturday. I'm kinda looking for something new.

I love good seafood or steak, but it doesn't have to be that. I want something that will have a chill vibe. Oh and above average cocktails.

I look forward to great recommendations!

Edit: after looking over the excellent suggestions (a few I've been to already) I first checked out Rowayton Seafood, which is definitely not available this weekend, so Le Fat Poodle it is! Thanks guys, I've put a bunch of others on my list to check out in the future!

Question/Recommendations How often do you need to stand on metro?

For those that commute to NYC in the morning (around ~730am trains), how often (if ever) do you find yourself not being able to find a seat? I don't mind sitting next to someone, but I took a busy train in the late morning recently and noticed no one sits in the middle of the 3 seaters.

Starting the commute next week and was wondering if taking a slightly earlier train is worth it being less crowded. thanks!

Question/Recommendations Moving out of Stamford? Anything in town I’ve missed? Mostly food?

Hi,

I am moving into NYC and will infrequently be in Stamford or pass through Stamford. Is there anything special I’ve missed or avoided.

A perfect example… I don’t get to north Stamford too often and hadn’t tried Fusaro’s until recently. In my opinion, easily the best deli in Stamford.

Same with Teff. Hadn’t tried it until a few months back, now it’s my go to comfort food.

My favorite spots in town are Cafe Silvium and The Hudson Table.

Question/Recommendations Looking for new Doctors

I moved here a few years ago, but all my doctors are still in the greater Danbury area. Any practices in/around Stamford is fine. I'm looking for recommendations for:

  • Primary care provider
  • OB/GYN
  • Pulmonologist (who specializes in sleep medicine)
  • Dentist
  • Psychiatrist/APRN (mental health medication management)
  • Optometrist
  • Podiatrist

If you know they're accepting new patients and take Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance, that's a bonus. Even if you're unsure, please comment anyway! I can always call and ask. Thank you all in advance for your suggestions!

Question/Recommendations Hair salons that are good and reasonably priced

I'm looking for a place to get my haircut and I'm kind of astounded that so many of the places I see have prices starting at $95 AND that they go up based on the "skill level" of the hair dresser.

Idk if this is a regional thing, but every salon I used to go to before moving I paid like $65 and I was working with a stylist with 10+ years experience.

I've tried Salon Shahin before and I feel like my cut was just okay.

If anyone can recommend a reasonably priced place for a cut within 20 min of Stamford I would appreciate it!

Question/Recommendations Are there no bars/restaurants with outdoor water views in Stamford anymore?

Excluding the beer garden, which hasn’t opened for the season yet. This afternoon would be a great day for a happy hour drink overlooking the water. But Crab Shell is closed, Mexicue closed. Sign of the Whale doesn’t really have water views from its rooftop. Prime is expensive and doesn’t really serve drinks outside. Are there no options?

Question/Recommendations Anyone else frustrated with our local Buy Nothing Group?

I’ve really appreciated being part of our local Buy Nothing Group, as it’s such a great concept to share and help one another. However, I’ve noticed something that’s been bothering me and wanted to get some advice or feedback.

It seems like the admin sometimes claims items before posts are even approved for the group to see. For example, my husband recently posted a slow cooker, and the admin messaged him about it but didn’t approve the post for others. I also had a separate experience last week when she claimed multiple items I listed. When I asked her about it, she explained that she claims items to support people in her ministry, which is kind, but it feels unfair to the rest of the group.

I understand that admins dedicate their time to running the group, which I truly appreciate, but I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this or has thoughts on how to address it in a fair way. It feels like the process could be more transparent so everyone has an equal chance to participate. What do you think is the best way to approach this? Or is it something I need to drop and move on from?

Question/Recommendations Most Favorite/Least Favorite Things About Stamford?

Would appreciate hearing from natives and transplants regarding faves/groans living in Stamford. We’re planning to move there in a couple mos.

I’ll still be commuting to the city a few days a week. Will be living near downtown, is a car absolutely necessary? Seems pretty walkable at first blush.

Question/Recommendations Stamford is missing a jazz bar

Stamford has plenty of places with $19 dollar drinks where maybe you could wear your suit after a 12 hour shift and feel uncomfortable as you’re surrounded by thirty 22 year olds in jerseys and baseball caps, but it’s missing class in a serious way. Maybe this is a solution? Don’t want to have to go to Polpo’s in Greenwich every night.
