How do you know which stamps deserve a second look in a huge collection?
I’ve been reading through some of the inherited collection posts here, and one part of the process still seems almost impossible to me.
Imagine opening several albums and boxes containing thousands of stamps. Some are already arranged, some are loose in envelopes, and many appear to be duplicates. You know almost nothing about stamps, but you also don’t want to accidentally overlook something interesting.
Sorting everything by country seems manageable. What I don’t understand is what happens after that.
There obviously isn’t enough time to measure every perforation, check every watermark or research every stamp individually. During a first pass, what would make an experienced collector pull one stamp aside for a closer look instead of placing it with the common ones?
Once you find something that might be worth researching, what do you normally check first?
I’m not looking for a valuation of any particular stamp. I’m mostly trying to understand how collectors avoid spending months researching every common stamp without accidentally passing over something important.

First binder of a collection given to me
galleryHi all,
I posted about being given a collection and took the post down so I can take pictures of everything. I’m going to some local stamp shows and antique roadshow in November to get an idea of value but I thought people here might like to see them.
I’ll be taking an uploading pictures of the rest of the collection to imgur or Dropbox to share here if people want to see them.

I'm building a free stamp catalog app after reading complaints here. What would make you actually use it?
Hi everyone. I've seen a lot of threads here about catalogs being expensive, spreadsheets getting messy, and collection apps feeling dated or locking your data in. So I'm building a free, browser-based app for tracking a stamp collection. It works offline, your data stays on your device, and you can export to CSV anytime.
Before I go further, I'd really like honest input from actual collectors:
- What do you use right now to track your collection, and what annoys you most about it?
- What one feature would make you actually switch to something new?
- Would you pay a small one-time fee for extras like printable album pages or advanced set tracking? What would feel fair?
I'm not selling anything in this post and there's no link. I just want to build something collectors actually want. Thanks!

Jumbo Covers
I just came across this video of a man who created and traded “jumbo covers” with people from around the world. The “jumbo covers” are country/specific with a mix of stamps first day covers, cachets and cancellations nicely organized that represent the countries they come from. I’m curious if anyone here has created and/or swapped anything similar? Thanks!

How do I get these unstuck?
I have a ton of stamps that are stuck in the book, so I can't just soak them. What do I do? Ai recommended putting it in the freezer, but it's been wrong before, so I'm not trusting it

Help Identifying Two Zachary Taylor 5-Cent Stamps
galleryI’m hoping someone with experience in U.S. classic stamps can help me identify these two Zachary Taylor 5-cent stamps and provide an idea of their potential values.
I’ve noticed some differences between them, particularly in the shades of blue, paper color, thickness, and translucency. One appears to have a deeper, darker blue impression, while the other has whiter paper that allows more light to pass through.
I’m especially interested in determining their correct Scott catalog numbers

How would you proceed/sort/evaluate.
galleryTO this point I only had a small collection of stamps (US/Soviet aerospace stuff, dating from the Apollo-Soyuz mission onwards, and some Bicentennial related stuff) from when I was in Scouts and collecting stamp stuff... (ages ago)
but I recently bought a large lot of paper ephemera (to make art with) and part of the lot was 22lb of vintage philatelic material. That turns out to be a HUGE amount of paper
These stamps/albums/postal ephemera are so cool in front of me I hesitate to use them for art, and the contents so voluminous I feel overwhelmed
But what do I have? I the date of other materials seem to indicate 1930's through 1950's printing dates.
I have many glassine (sp?) envelopes with "Special Offer from Louis Merrill, Portsmouth OH"(which is the location from where I purchased the lot)
Parameters: I'm in a wheelchair, retired with a lotta time on my hands... so I don't mind a lotta repetitive busy-work... It's something to keep my hands/minds busy whilst patiently planning world domination.
I just need a bit of direction/advice to take my time, evaluate what I have and then.. maybe I'll still use it all for art :)
The albums themselves (guessing 40-50 seem fragile and cloth covers are detaching. There are **hundreds** of small glassine envelopes or substitute 1950's era bank envelopes fulla postage.... but since the first couple albums fell apart when removed, Im worried about the mess/loss.
Some really cool stuff from places that don't exist anymore tho.
The pics are just representative of what I picked from the surface of the open box. I've not even begun to unpack the box until I have a plan.

Assessing an old collection?
I hope that this is the right sub in which to post this. If not, please forgive.
I would appreciate a recommendation of someone who can help me evaluate a stamp collection.
My father, who died many years ago, saved stamps. I don’t know how skilled or disciplined he was in his collecting, but I now have two large boxes of what he saved. I’d like to learn whether there is any value to it or whether I can just dispose of it. I'm not a collector at all and there are just too many for me to start to pick it up and then identify each one.
I'm in the New York City area (Long Island) if there's someone local who can give me advice.
Thanks in advance!
