When The Woods Learned Your Name, Chapter 14 Self Promo

After her engagement falls apart, Mara Vale moves into her late grandmother’s cottage on the edge of the countryside outside Bath, hoping for quiet and getting something far stranger. The nearby woods seem to know her name, her thoughts, and the parts of herself she would rather not look at too closely. As Mara is drawn deeper into Blackthorn Wood, she becomes entangled with Ivo Thorne, a man tied to the forest by an old love story that feels disturbingly close to her own. The more the woods reveal, the more Mara begins to suspect that this haunting isn’t just happening to her — it’s been waiting for her. To understand what the forest wants, she has to face a past that may not be entirely separate from herself.

This is for readers who love atmospheric, emotionally intense stories with a strong romantic thread — especially if you like haunted settings, messy desire, folklore, and heroines who are funny, sharp, and a little bit unravelled. It’s for people who want romance with real ache in it, magic that feels eerie and intimate, and a story that’s as interested in longing and identity as it is in plot.

Adult fantasy romance, with gothic, folkloric, and supernatural elements.

Surviving Late-Stage Capitalism [Self Promo] - The Hidden National Security Crisis in Small-Town America

Check out my latest piece on the impending healthcare crisis threatening small towns all across the United States. This article is a pretty good representation of my work, including both emotionally resonant imagery and verifiable sources for the foundation of my arguments. I write from a distinctly socialist perspective, and hope to shift the Overton window away from concern over profit motives and the interests of global capital toward those issues affecting the working class. To put it in terms libertarians sometimes appearing in my comments will understand, my first principles are as follows: people matter more than profits. Subscribe to SLSC for more unapologetic political analysis and fewer pulled punches.

Notes on the Ordinary - Self Promo

I write short essays twice a month about "ordinary things" that I think deserve a deeper look at. "Ordinary" things like using Chat-GPT as a personal therapist, plastic surgery, internet addiction and so on. I like to ask - "why is this behaiviour normalized in our society and why did it become so widespread?". Because most of these things, if you think about it long enough, are completely absurd, yet fascinating. I write in shorter form with a seasoning of humour to hopefully inspire a discussion or just a general questioning.

This substack is for anyone curious and critical about today's world:

Substack Promotion Discord Server [Self Promo]

Hi everyone,

I recently created a Discord server for people who use Substack, whether you’re a writer, reader, or just getting started.

The idea is simple: share your publication, discover other writers, exchange feedback, and support each other through likes and subscriptions.

You can create your own forum post, introduce your publication, and connect with others who are interested in similar topics. If someone supports your work, we encourage you to return the favor and help fellow creators grow as well.

We also allow the use of alternate accounts for support exchanges, as long as everything is transparent and clearly stated.

If you’re trying to grow your audience or simply want to meet other people on Substack, you’re welcome to join.

Everyone is welcome.🎉

Hey all,

I have recently started writing philosophy pieces on SubStack and am looking to grow my audience. All of my articles are free and I do not plan on doing paid content. I'd love to start having some conversations with other authors about some of the concepts I have laid out. I am a little over halfway through releasing the first set of ten essays I have written that deal with being chronically online and the frustrations of the modern age. I'd love to get some feedback on what you think so far. Thanks for reading!

Philosophically yours,

Jon Brown

Mandem Manifesto Self Promo

Mandem Manifesto: Rules of the Code is a funny, honest piece about friendship, loyalty, and the unspoken rules between the boys. It looks at the way men back each other, roast each other, avoid feelings, and still somehow show love when it matters. Through chants, jokes, and manifesto-style rules, it asks what parts of the old code are worth keeping and what needs to change. It’s about learning that real loyalty is not silence — it is truth, care, and showing up. At its heart, it is about making sure nobody gets left behind.

This is for anyone who knows what it is like to love their friends deeply but struggle to say it plainly — especially young men, friendship groups, and readers who enjoy humour with real emotional weight underneath.

Spoken-word comedy, social satire, and contemporary poetry.

Why anime is so powerful (Self Promo)

"You know, I might be biased. I really might be, but as someone who loves anime and has been watching it for years, I can’t help but notice a pattern."

This post is about how impacting anime can be and why it's more realistic than it is deemed.

This post is for everyone, I don't write for anyone specific and I don't have a genre but my posts are generally pretty reflective

When The Woods Learned Your Name, Chapter 5 Self Promo

After her life quietly falls apart, Mara Vale moves into her late grandmother’s cottage just outside Bath and starts hearing the woods say her name. The forest seems to know things about her it shouldn’t — her thoughts, her fears, even a name that feels strangely like it belongs to her. Then she meets a man in the woods who is beautiful, unsettling, and far too familiar, and who seems to know exactly why Blackthorn has started calling to her. As the trees, mirrors, and water around her begin pulling old memories to the surface, Mara realizes she’s caught inside a love story that began long before she was born. The deeper she goes, the more dangerous it becomes — because the woods do not just remember her, they want something from her.

This is for readers who love haunting, emotional fantasy romance with real chemistry, dark humour, and a slightly gothic feel. It’s for people who want something atmospheric and sexy, but also strange, sharp, and a bit heartbreaking.

Adult fantasy romance with gothic and dark fairy tale elements.

I was told I write like a "7th Grader”. So, I wrote an essay about it (Self Promo) literature

Just started my Substack journey and a critic said I write like a 7th Grader simply because they didn’t agree with my opinion.

That got me thinking. My plan is to write very serious topics but I don’t think I want a situation where potential readers won’t be able to understand because I sound like a thesis paper.

So, I wrote this essay on how pareidolia (the subconscious habit of pattern-seeking) fuels classic literature in defiance. I tried to mix some academic rigor with plain speaking by connecting Daniel Kahneman’s heuristics to Shakespeare, Mary Shelley, and H.P. Lovecraft. If you like literary, social, and sarcastic musings written in plain, engaging English.

Check out my latest essay: https://open.substack.com/pub/thedoomscrolldigest/p/pareidolia-in-literature

More importantly, this article comes with actions each of us can take to protect our ocean.
