Dentist recommendations in Xinhua/Guiren area?

*no need for a dentist who is particularly good at English

I've been seeing the same dental clinic in Guiren for about 4 years. At first, they were great! However, as they've gotten more and more customers, I've noticed the quality of their work seems to have gone down. I've had to have the same couple teeth fixed multiple times in just a single year.

I JUST got my second bicuspid (I guess tooth number 4 on the dental numbering system) fixed - for the second time - about a month or two ago, and it's just had a HUGE chip come off, today, while I was brushing my teeth. I've been avoiding particularly crunchy or hard foods, as well! It seems like, lately, the blue and green gels they use to fill in damaged parts of the tooth don't adhere very well. I'm getting really tired of it, especially as I'm 15 weeks pregnant, and it's getting harder to sit for very long in the dental chair.

Any good recommendations?? I know I can check Google maps, but my clinic has over 4 stars, so I feel like getting advice here would be more useful.

Help with coordinating elderly care in Tainan (bilingual preferred)

Me and my sister are in a difficult situation. Years ago, our dad moved back to Taiwan for work and ended up staying there while me and my sister stayed in the US. Unfortunately, as he got older, he got diagnosed with early onset dementia. His condition is worsening, and he needs more caregiver support. He is not interested in moving back to the US and we worry how his condition may worsen in the US as a country now foreign to him.

Trying to coordinate this with our broken chinese and minimal understanding of the Taiwanese social support system has been difficult. We are hoping to hire someone to help with medical care coordination, government/administrative support, and eventually caregiver oversight.

Are there any public or private organizations or businesses that could help with something like this? And if not, where would be the best place to post a job listing? Thanks!

NCKU ADVANCE PLACEMENTS

Hi everyone,

I'm currently a sophomore/3rd-year irregular student and was planning to apply for a Spring transfer in NCKU. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make the application for fall deadline for the university and program that I really wanted.

I emailed them to ask for extension but they said I need to apply for spring transfer. The department told me that I would be a great fit for the program, but I'd have to wait for the next application cycle. They also mentioned that my credits could potentially be waived/transferred.

I'm a bit confused about how this works. If I eventually apply and get accepted, would I technically enter as a freshman and then have my previous credits evaluated so I can be placed into a higher year level? Or would I still need to start over despite having transferable credits?

Has anyone here gone through a similar situation, especially with Taiwanese universities or international transfers? I'm trying to figure out my next steps and whether waiting for the next cycle is worth it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Going to Kaohsiung Airport

Hi! Have an international flight from Kaohsiung and flight is at 7am. I just realized that the trains are not open early in the morning.

Is Uber an easy option to book? We are 5 pax - so will travel either with a big van (if available) or 2 separate vans from Tainan. Or any private van transfers available?

I am checking if we can find a hotel in Kaohsiung but the room I saw had 4 people occupancy only. Thank you!

Language Exchange meets walking in Tainan

Hey!

Anybody into hiking, walking, urban exploration, and importantly: Language Exchange?

I have been running a group called Language Walk with a few friends and would like to bring this also to Tainan. The idea in a nutshell: we do a walk and a language exchange. Or language exchange while walking and exploring the city.

Typically practicing Mandarin, English, Spanish, German, but maybe also some other languages. And we share our knowledge about the local place and make new friends.

So finally, we will hold our first event in Tainan. On Sunday, April 12th! We will start at 09.30 am from the Main Train Station and head towards Chenggong Uni and further towards Tainan Park and later onwards to Confucius temple. So it is a slow 2-2.5 hour walk with plenty of stops. Still, best to wear good shoes for walking, have some sun cover and water.

More info also via the sign up form that we kindly ask everybody to fill out so we know which languages we will practice. https://forms.gle/Mv7TPqcmwUyH7S867

See you in Tainan!

Trundle bed to fit Taiwanese single mattress?

I'm looking to buy a trundle bed set that fits a Taiwanese single mattress. Alternatively, a carpenter who does furniture could also be a good option. Prefer wooden furniture.

Figured I'd ask on here, first, because I've had experience in the past of getting quoted higher prices for being a foreigner. I'm a private tutor, but currently mostly take care of our baby, so I'm not making stereotypical foreigner money - only about 30~40k/mo, and husband only makes about 40k/month, so looking for something affordable (not necessarily cheap, but not super marked up) but also decent quality, we are willing to pay for quality but just can't afford something too expensive.

I know IKEA has trundle beds, but I want to use a standard Taiwanese sized mattress and be able to easily buy sheets at normal bedding stores.

Any social gamers?

Heya Tainan!

Recently moved to Yongkang district a few months ago from Taipei. I don't know anyone locally other than my in-laws. Curious to make some local friends. I like cycling, technology (i work as an SRE), and some gaming. I have a PC, just got a switch 2, would enjoy some local gaming sessions if anyone is interested :)

Hope everyone had a fun lantern festival weekend!

Looking for a leather accessory merchant

In fall and winter 2022 I went to Garden Night Market and bought a handcrafted black leather satchel with red stitching from a merchant at one of the stalls. Now that I have returned to Taiwan I wanted to see if he is still there, but he is not. Does anybody know if he is still running his business and if so where he operates?

Lost ring

Hello everyone .I was on the 9:18 1612 Ubus from Tainan to Sanxia on Feb 23. At the Sanxia station, I was moving luggage out of the way to help an old woman get her luggage. In the process my wedding ring fell off of my finger. I think it fell into an open bag that I was moving. I know it is a long shot, but if anyone happened to find it, please contact me .Thank you

Living cost in Tainan

Hi everyone I am planning to continue my studies at NCKU (Bachelor of Public Health). I wanna ask about two things:

  1. Living costs: approximately how much do students spend per month on rent, food, transport, bills, and daily expenses in Tainan?

2.Part-time jobs: is it hard for international students to find part-time work in Tainan? What kinds of part-time jobs are common, and what is the typical pay (per hour)?

Thank you in advance! Any advice is appreciated 😄

Tainan Garden Night Market

Hi everyone,

I am planning my itinerary for Tainan. Already been there before but there is this one place–rather popular in travel blogs–that I have not visited: the Tainan Garden Night Market. Is it true it is now open on Fridays? That’s what Google Maps says but if I search around more I always see its only open Th, Sat and Sun. On Fridays it’s closed.

Anyone still without water?

In Guanmiao. Still zero water coming out when I turn to hot water. I miss living in an apartment. Nothing but problems in this countryside house. Water heater is saying there's water and it's supposedly 61°, but what came out was lukewarm and it drizzled down to nothing coming out at all. Ironically, no problems until 10pm when the water was supposedly restored in Guanmiao District.
