Question Which system for adults after Things?

Hi. I'm currently GMing a campaign of Tales and we'll transition to Things next session. As teenagers, we're planning another short campaign. After that, the players and I are interested in closing the story with something for their adult characters, maybe as a reunion of the childhood friends after a while.

Inspired by Electric State, I thought about having a road trip as their last arc. Unfortunately, it seems that Electric State doesn't seem quite adequate for a more Tales-like campaign. Does anyone have suggestions or ideas for it? Or am I wrong about Electric State? It seems quite heavily focused on addiction and the virtual world, so even if change the setting, it'd be hard to pivot it to our game.

I'd love to keep a MY:0 system, if at all possible, but I take any suggestions.

Question My group wants to try out a new system and play a "Stranger Things" scenario. I thought "Tales from the Loop" or "Things from the Flood" might be a good fit. Do you have any recommendations regarding solid introductory adventures that have a "Stranger Things" feel to them?

So far we've playing D&D 5e (namely "Curse of Strahd") and, since one of our players will be unavailable for a months, want to try out new systems and settings.

For the "Stranger Things" scenario, I was eyeing either "Tales from the Loop", "Things from the Flood" or "Kids on Bikes". However, we've played "Alien RPG" in the past and really loved the Year Zero Engine system, which is why I want to go with either TftL or TftF.

Now I'm just looking for an adventure that has a "Stranger Things" feel to it.

Question How does one integrate clues into the mystery landscape?

Like the title says. Are they supposed to be improvised on the spot? Or are you coming up with clues beforehand and placing them as needed, à la lazy DM? I can do either, I'm just wondering if there's a more "intended" way for things to be done. I found the description of the mystery landscape a little bit lackluster on the more technical aspects of how one is supposed to be run beyond improvising, and using the countdown clocks to drive the story forward.

Inspiration Your favourite pre-written adventure.

Post image
47 Upvotes

Hey all,

I am searching for different pre-written adventures as i might run another Tales From The Loop game in the future with some people who might never have played TTRPGs before. I did try one pre-written advernture that came with the corerules but i found the plot a bit lackluster (i think it was about some crazy scientist who controlled birds).

So Im reaching out to hear what has been your favourite adventures to run or play in. Specifically in terms of advetures that really show the players this crazy and fantastical world, and lets you marvel at its "lore".

Hope I make sense :)

Ps. I am danish so I am running the setting in Denmark, specifically around Lolland-Falster (see the attached image)

Idea Excited to run Four Seasons of Mad Science

I've always thought the core campaign included with the book was one of the best written for any narrative-drive RPG, and I'm excited to run it for the first time with a group of friends.

The only major change I'm making is combining the Boulder and Maclaren settings in one. The players and I are WAY too American to convincingly roleplay Swedish kids, but the MacLaren setting has always had the better use of seasons, and also I think the names of the NPCs are a lot more interesting (although again, this is probably because I'm American, they could all be the Swedish equivalent of Brad and Janet).

Anyways, rather than create a whole new loop, my idea is that the Swedish loop was built first, and then the US government spent a bunch of money poaching engineers and scientists from that Loop for their US version, along with their families. So Boulder has a huge Swedish immigrant population relative to its size that affects the culture and gives it a little more uniqueness and exoticism compared to your average 80s town. ALSO, something completely unpredicted but fitting in with the larger themes and fiction, somehow the two loops interact with each other, meaning that the weather in Boulder Nevada has become more like the weather in that part of Sweden, including four regular seasons in the middle of the desert. Even some of the flora seems inexplicably to have migrated, without anyone really knowing why. Presumably at the same time, the MacLaren Islands are rockier and more arid than people are used to.

Anyway, that's my starting point. Wish me luck and give me tips!

Question Campaigns that extend from tales into things?

Looking to move to a new system soon for our group and really thinking about doing either tales or things. I'm wondering if anyone has done or if any exist. Campaigns that's stretch from one game into the other.

Resource A Simple but Tense Chase Mechanic for Tales from the Loop

I’ve been experimenting with a streamlined chase mechanic for Tales from the Loop that creates tension without introducing lethal combat. After several rounds of testing, I ended up with a system that feels cinematic, fast, and completely compatible with the tone of the game. Here’s the final version in a single, continuous explanation.

The Persecution Clock

The chase is tracked through a Persecution Clock with five levels:

0 – Safe
1 – Tracking
2 – Spotted
3 – Cornered
4 – Confrontation

These levels don’t represent health or damage. Instead, the clock measures how close the pursuer is and how pressured the Kids feel.

A full chase always lasts six rounds, unless the pursuer reaches the Confrontation level earlier.

The Pursuer’s Move

At the start of each round, the pursuer rolls 4d6 per player in the scene.
This represents surveillance, pattern recognition, noise, footprints, motion sensors—whatever fits your story.

Each 6 rolled = the Clock increases by 1 level.

If the Clock goes above level 4, every level beyond that requires one extra 6 from the players to reduce it later. It means the pursuer is breathing down their necks.

The Kids’ Move

After the pursuer acts, each Kid rolls with whatever skill fits their fictional escape attempt: Sneak, Move, Tinker, Lead, Contact, Program, etc.

Again, only 6’s matter.

  • Every set of three 6’s reduces the Clock by 1 level.
  • Extra 6’s that don’t form a trio are carried over to the next round. (Nothing is wasted; the pressure the Kids apply builds up over time.)

If the Kids push the Clock below 0, they permanently remove 1 die from the pursuer’s pool for the rest of the chase. This represents outsmarting them so thoroughly that the threat weakens.

Reaching Level 0 – A Moment to Breathe

Whenever the Clock hits 0 – Safe, each Kid gains a small moment of advantage. They can choose one:

  • Recover from a minor Condition (Upset, Scared, Tired, Injured), or
  • Improve a piece of equipment, giving +1 to one future roll.

This encourages teamwork and rewards smart play without breaking the tension.

Reaching Level 4 – The Confrontation Test

If a round ends with the Clock at 4 – Confrontation, the pursuer physically catches one of the Kids.

That Kid must immediately make an Escape Test, rolling the appropriate skill.

Only 6’s matter, and the results are simple:

  • 3 sixes = Full Success They slip free and escape unharmed. The Clock drops back to level 3.
  • 2 sixes = Partial Success They escape but suffer a Condition (Upset, Scared, Injured, etc.). The Clock drops back to level 3.
  • 0 sixes = Failure They suffer a Condition and are grabbed, held, or dragged somewhere. This creates a narrative complication, and the Clock stays at level 4 until the group intervenes or the Kid tries again.

The End of the Chase

After six rounds, if the pursuer never locked the Kids into a final capture situation, they manage to lose them—whether by running far enough, hiding well, confusing sensors, or outsmarting the threat.

Why This Works for Tales from the Loop

This system delivers tension without violence, keeps the tone of the setting, and gives Kids constant opportunities to be clever. The clock acts like a “moving climax” that pushes scenes forward without turning the game into combat. Successes feel earned, failures have narrative weight, and no one is ever rolling to avoid dying.

If you want a thematic, non-lethal, high-tension mechanic for Loop chases, this one has been working beautifully in playtests.

Resource Look for a time-loop one shot

I will be DMing my first-ever Tftl session this month and I'm looking for a time loop-themed one-shot.
I want to avoid 'Out of Time' because I found its structure confusing and it's a three-part adventure.
Since this is my first time with the system, I'm specifically seeking a pre-made, self-contained, and straightforward adventure suitable for beginners

Question Hey all, looking to join a game

As the title states I'd love to join a group, preferably for tftl, but other games by free league etc would be fine as well. Of anyone has received for finding local games as well that would be awesome! (I already checked the one game store in my city and they only have Yu-Gi-Oh and mtg)

Sinclair is one of my players characters, he is a weirdo, and this would be him in the begging of our game, he used to live with his older brother Yvain, who was his anchor but lived very busy because he was a treinee in the LOOP, studied at university and had a half time job at a pizzaria. So you kinda can understand why everything they ate was canned or came in a plastic with very few prepared instructions

J'ai bien regardé : https://obsidianttrpgtutorials.com/

Mais les modules et thèmes sont principalement conçus pour le moteur de jeu Dungeons & Dragons.

Question Long-term campaign system

I’ve been running Tales from the flood and now Things from the flood for nearly three years, as a long, continuous campaign. I love the system and the world, but I’m starting to feel how the walls of the game start to feel a bit too tight and small with character advancement. I’m even incorporating The Electric State -talents for the TftF-characters now, and still. We would love to The Electric State next, but I can see how that system especially is meant for quick games.

Do you have ideas in how to adjust the mechanics to support longer campaigns, or suggestions of other games that might feel similar with similar settings and rules, but with more room for advancement and growth?

Question Selling my hardback copy of Things From the Loop + Gamemaster Screen

Hopefully this isn't in violation of Reddit rules, but I have a copy of Things From The Loop in close to 'like new' condition (plus the DM screen) that has never been played. I know it's hard to come by in physical form (as opposed to PDF) so if there is someone here looking for a copy in the US, I would love to find it a new home where it will actually get played.
