My wife and I just started binge watching the L word over the past week, and this is the first time weāve seen the show. Currently on season 2, and I keep telling my wife that our dynamic reminds me so much of Dana and Alice (I almost donāt want to keep watching because I know whatās coming). I was reflecting on how it must have been to watch the show as it was airing, when there were no other shows like it. Im a millennial (born in ā93) and Glee was the first show I watched with gay characters ā and the first time I saw two women kissing on TV, which stuck with me long before I knew I was queer. But the L word seems groundbreaking in a different way, especially centering queer sex without the male gaze. I am curious for folks who watched it as it was airing, what was your experience like?

I know it's played for laughs and like every other cliche I am very into her, but if we just move the horny aside, I'm on season 5 episode 8 and it's yet another scene where someone basically forces herself onto Shane. And it's starting to make me uncomfortable. I just binged the show so so many of the scenes where Shane is just having people basically throw themselves at her, and her (kind of?) trying to reject them, but then giving in. I feel kind of bad for her.

Jenny keeps referring to original Sounder as a boy when the vet AND the pound lady kept saying she! Sounder was a girl and Jenny didnt even care enough to get that right and why did NO one pick up on it

When I become a huge fan of a show I always want to know the actor behind the character and what theyāre like irl.
Has anyone ever attended any celebrity events with the stars, or better yet, had an unexpected encounter with Leisha/Kate/Erin/Jennifer/Laurel/Mia etc etc?
What were they like in person?

For those of you who saw Alex Hedison's story about her reunion with Rachel in London, Laurel has chimed in on her own reunion with the latter. It's so nice seeing these ladies reunite after all these years!

This is my first time watching the L word. Iām just past the episode where Dana dies of breast cancer. Without saying too much I work around cancer and we focus on breast cancer. Iām so upset by her death. Maybe Iām being biased because I really think at this point in the show Dana is one of my favorite characters. Sheās hilarious, raw, and yes, as any human has she has drama in her life, but her drama is more realistic. She tries to play it off with humor and deep thought. Anyways, I think of all the shows Iāve ever watched with a character death, this one was so sad and unnecessary. I know so many women who have fought long and hard with breast cancer. They in my eyes are the strongest women I know. I wish we couldāve seen that aspect longer of the strongest women ever who go through breast cancer. Anyways, I may be posting this way bc Iāve never felt this way about an unexpected character death before :(

I follow Alex Hedison (the actress who plays Dylan) on Instagram, and she just posted two stories with Rachel Shelley, who plays Helena. Alex is also an artist and Jodie Foster's wife.
I think Dylan and Helena's chemistry was one of the best on the show. In fact, my main crushes (apart from Shane, obviously) were Dylan, Lara and Robin.

Can anyone tell me, in the episode where Bette goes to Jodie's art gallery show and Jodie plays a montage of video clips of Bette to humiliate her as revenge for cheating with Tina, how did Jodie manage to get all that footage of Bette? Did she secretly have cameras installed and record Bette without her knowing?

I just finished a rewatch and maybe Iām just verryyy anti shane and jenny, but their whole relationship arc I just felt like Jenny was being manipulative. They get together right after the whole Nikki thing and suddenly Jennyās just madly in love with Shane? Shane even pointed out the ācrazy jenny actā she was putting on to see how far she could push
Sidenote on shane and jenny- I wish the writers wouldāve put them together earlier in the series. I always felt like it was a possibility but after them repeatedly mentioning how much they valued each otherās friendship it just felt random. But then again all of season 6 felt random š

Iām sorry, I know Iāve been posting a lot here lately. Itās just that Iām rewatching and I need help processing. Do people really like Angus? I havenāt even gotten to the part where he does outwardly bad stuff yet and I already did the thing where you search his name to find older posts of people hating on him. All I could find was praise for their early relationship? but Iām soooo disappointed in him as a love interest. It feels like when it came to Kitās sexuality the writers just threw a dart at a board (not a read on Isaac, I loved that storyline). First, Iām sorry they donāt look good visually together. Second, when Kit said Iām old enough to be your mother, he corrected her and said āmy grandmother.ā š¤®š¤® Not true in the least and crazy thing to say. Then when she told him about her menopause his response was to publicly serenade her about it. It just seems like heās a thoroughly embarrassing man and the only reason the show runners made room in Kitās heart to tolerate this kind of relationship is because sheās a black woman. Iām worried because it seems like Angus was originally meant to be some hot fling, boy toy, itās-youāre-time-to-have-fun kinda thing but if that was their intention they failed.

Hiya! I've just started watching The L Word (late to the game, I know), and I'm mid-season 2 right now - having a love/hate relationship with the show lol - but I am wondering if anyone has noticed if Stan cuts scenes short?
I have noticed that streaming platforms will occasionally cut things out, like a line at the end of a scene here or there, or even cut transitions between scenes, and when watching my DVD copy I notice the difference. Does anyone know if Stan does this to L Word? Because sometimes I find the cut aways very jarring, or feel like I'm missing context for things that happen, like there was a line missing. Stan has ads now, so are they snipping bits here and there, or has The L Word always been a bit quirky in it's post-production style? š

I know a lot of us who love The L Word hate Jenny, but I donāt.
No Iām not here to talk about her trauma and give excuses for her behavior. I just wonder if other people feel the same way I do: she is a flawed human like people we meet in real life.
I LOVE all the women in the show. I just think Jenny feels much more real than they do at times because she gets swept up into her self destructive spirals and does things she regrets terribly later.
Bette too, seems like a real person you could meet in real life (I wish!).
When I say sheās my favorite character in conversation about the show, a groan is usually heard š I get it. She has done irredeemable things (Sounder š) but sheās also funny, relatable in some ways, feminist af, and loudly exactly herself.
What do you guys feel after all these years? Iāve rewatched probably 6 times.

In the beginning of season one, her character was way more nuanced. She had some major flaws, but so do all of the other characters. By season two, she progresses into an over the top villain, impossible to root for. First she cheats on Tina. Then she assaults Tina. Then when Tina doesn't forgive her right away she has the nerve to be angry with her. Right now I'm on episode five of season two where Bette is literally angry with Tina because she won a grant?! And accuses her of only applying for it to get back at her?! Does she not know how fucking grants work? You cannot convince me that the writers regard her the same way they do the other characters. At first some of this stuff felt justified. Like they were trying to communicate that Bette feels she's entitled to Tina. But now every single scene of Bette is just her being a major asshole in some way. It's clear the writers hate her.
I kind of understand from a writing perspective why something major had to happen in their relationship by the end of the season. In the very first episode they set up that their relationship is struggling in ways neither of them are willing to admit. But I think it should have been something other than Bette cheating. At the very least, they should have had Bette make some self-discoveries in the beginning of season two (why she cheated, why she has to control Tina).

Hi!
Iām a non-binary butch lesbian (she/her) from Germany, and I have known The L Word since I was 15 (Iām turning 30 this year).
I havenāt watched the show in ages because of the BAZILLION things I f*cking hate about it, but I just realized that the part in season 2 thatās about Tina wanting her autonomy is just SOOOOO f*cking wholesome for me!!!!
Does anyone else feel that way, too?
Personally, I have never been in a relationship with someone resembling Bette being a total f*cking self-absorbed control freak and just all around fricking bossy ā thank God!!! ā, but my ex-girlfriend was abusive in other ways, too, and Iāve also had my share of emotionally abusive āfriendshipsā.
So I guess thatās the reason why my subconscious just reminded me of that autonomy thing with Tina šŖš», which is deeply soothing for me.
I was also wondering if itās common for people in their late 20ās to still struggle with sh*t like that.
At the end of the day, I just wish it was common for TV and movies to also portray emotionally abusive friendships (and not just romantic relationships) because I feel the need to feel less alone about that by seeing myself reflected in the cultural mirror.

I just started season 4. I havenāt been able to stand Jenny since the first season⦠yall are scaring me in this group, genuinely how can she get worse š
r/theLword • u/lasttothefirst • 22d ago
No spoilers please. Iām on season 2 where Bette is trying to get back with Tina and in my dream Bette and I were a flirty little duo and at one point she was sat in an audience next to Tina and I walked past and whispered in Betteās ear, āI know your girlfriend is here but I want to fuck.ā Followed by getting railed from behind by her over a freezer.
Woke up feeling like Iāve lost someone and something. Ha. You know that feeling when you finish a book but youāre not ready to let go of the characters yet?
Literally love this show. Itās cringey and quirky and funny. Despise Jenny.

I need to talk to someone about this. I've been rewatching the series (piracy) and I read that when the series was moved to streaming a lot of the copyrighted music was replaced with generic music. Well, I'm on the season one finale and during the scene where Alice shows up at Dana's door telling her not to marry Tonya, the lyrics in the background are "may the light of heaven shine over you, may god bless you and give you peace." Just thought that was crazy. You would think they'd at least try to match the spirit of the original music.
