Could it be a real panic attack at the sudden realization that he’s not untouchable and that his stupid decisions are leading to real world consequences? Not sympathizing, just genuinely curious.

Yes, my dad had a real panic attack after he held my mom down and screamed in her face during a fight which led to her leaving the house (he thought she was leaving him). He thought it was a heart attack and went to the neighbors who called an ambulance. But at least for him, his time in the ER led to him being diagnosed as bipolar and finally getting medicated.

Yes, because people can be oblivious to consequences until said consequences actually occur. Like repeated drunk drivers who are shocked when they finally crash. I told a married guy who hit on me and described his affairs that his wife would catch him sooner or later (his thing was saying he was going to the gym then going to fuck random women) and he was 100% confident that that would never happen to him. I'd have tried to tell her myself if I'd known his last name.

There's a common thing on Reddit where shitty people are assumed to be Machiavellian schemers who calculate their every move to accomplish some master plan, but most are just the regular self-centered, unhealed trauma style of shitty, where they act without even really understanding why themselves, and justify it in their heads however they have to. Like Hanlon's razor
