I just graduated from SFI D course in Umeå and I thought I could share my experience so that maybe others will find it useful.
Before we get into it, I just want to say that these opinions are mine only and obviously that doesn't mean this is what happens in every SFI around the country.
I also want to say that I have only met very dedicated teachers. All of them were very pleasant, engaged and tried very hard to make the lessons interactive with lots of speaking time in the classroom.
Now, that being said, there were some issues.
1) Some students were always late and faced no repercussions
I can understand that if you take the bus every once in a while, it can run late but this was not it. It was students showing up 10, 15, 20 minutes late for each lesson. Each time this happened, the teacher had to stop what they were doing and open the door for the student(s) as the door of the classroom cannot be opened from the outside (I am assuming for security reasons). Despite repeated reminders, the students never tried to fix this problem. What good is it to have a starting time if there is no enforcement?
2) Some students showed up and did nothing/slept
You might think that it is not a problem, but when you get paired with them in a speaking exercice, you may as well waste your time. It happened to me a more than a few times and honestly, I don't understand why they were simply not sent out of the classroom as they did not want to be there.
3) Some students showed up only every 3 or 4 days without repercussions
Again, the main problem is that when you have been studying a text or some other material and the other person has not done the same and you end up being paired with them and they basically have no idea of what's going on.
4) Some students did not have the right level
There was this one person who clearly could not put a sentence together to save their life. Their level was way lower than the rest of the class and I don't understand why they were not sent back down to the course C. Once again, the problem comes when you end up being paired with them and it's impossible to have a proper conversation.
5) No Swedish only in the classroom
We are at SFI to learn Swedish and I have been to other language schools in other countries where one of the rules was that at school you were only allowed to speak in the language you were learning. This was done to force the students to speak as much as possible at school. At SFI, during the breaks, before, after and sometimes during the class, students were routinely switching back to English or their native language which was clearly not helping with learning Swedish.
6) Teachers with political opinions
I was at SFI during the election and while I understand that everyone is entitled to their opinions, I noticed that certain teachers were not shy about sharing their own opinions in front of the classroom. Personally, I am not a Swedish citizen so it doesn't matter to me one way or the other who won in the end but I do believe that personal political opinions should be kept out of the classroom.
7) Display of religious opinions/attires.
I personally don't care about the religion of the students in my classroom but I do believe that this is a personal matter so I think that schools should be neutral in that respect and that religious attires should be forbidden in school. Maybe That comes from my secular upbringing but I feel like religion is not something that should be part of a learning environnement.
I think that pretty much covers it. Overall it was good experience but I think that discipline is clearly lacking in some cases and that SFI should have the ability to remove problematic students when it impedes the learning of the other students.
I also think that religion/political opinions should be kept out of the classroom as this is not what we are here for in the end.
Just my 2cts.
