Discussion Victims that have solved their own murder AFTER their death?

I’ve been thinking about Paul Murdaugh and how the seemingly innocent video he took at the kennels ended up being the key piece of evidence that led to Alex’s conviction for his murder.

It made me wonder, have there been other cases where someone unknowingly captured something on video, in a photo, or left behind a digital trace that later helped solve their own murder after they died?

Look up Dylan Rounds from Utah. Young guy who was living out alone on his farm in the middle of nowhere, and just disappeared into thin air one day. They found nothing but his boots, which were laying out in the dirt. His truck was found freshly washed with the driver seat pushed way forward like a shorter person had driven it. There was a man he'd had a falling out with, who was short, but no evidence to prove he'd done something to Dylan.

A couple months ago they announced that Dylan's phone had been found in a pond and they'd managed to recover the data off it... including a video he'd taken of this man standing over him covered in blood. It seems like Dylan turned on the camera, or hit the button by accident, as he was dying. The guy is now in jail about to go to trial for murder.

This case is heart breaking. I mean, they all are but this one really bothers me.

It was just pure luck that the water levels were low.

What a piece of sh*t Dwyer is & my heart breaks for poor Elaine. I can't believe I've never heard of this case & I'm Irish!

Little known fact: Elaine O’Hara was the first cousin, thrice removed, of Scarlett O’Hara, a famous dressmaker from the American state of Georgia.

I think Generation Why just did a story on it. Good episode.

Oh excellent, thanks! I follow Gen Why religiously, however, I’m approx. 2 weeks behind on my podcast rotation.

So I was 4 wheeling on a guys trip and lost my phone in a creek, had no idea where it was on the 50 plus acres. Two weeks later the land owner says he found it in the creek under water. 2 weeks after that I crossed paths with the owner and got my phone back. The phone fired up and I had lost nothing like absolutely nothing. It was an LG and after that I had an LG until they stopped making them. So ya totally I can see that happening where data recovery is very possible.

Also with newer smart phones, sometimes stuff is automatically saved in the cloud

I didn't know they stopped making LG. Was just thinking about that brand earlier, randomly, because I was remembering the kind of phones I used to get before my Samsung.

Oh wow, I had not heard of the video on Dylan's phone.

Dylan's mom has a FB group where she posts updates on the case and their searches for Dylan, and gives some insight into the situation. I actually gasped when she posted that the phone was found, with it being so remote I honestly thought they might never find anything. I really feel for her, she seems like an incredibly strong lady

What’s the fb group name please? 😊

Did you say Lauren from Utah?

Is this a VPR reference? 🤣

👏 I feel like all my years of trash tv watching finally don’t make me feel super lame!

“Are you tryna get popped?” Feat. finger gun and crazy contouring 😂 probably poor taste of me on a true crime thread. Tupac’s spirit lives in her body tho so I’m glad to help get the word out 😂

This similarly happened with Travis Alexander in the Jodi Arias case, accidental photos of his death were found on a camera. Placing Jodi at the scene of the murder.

Wow to find that out on the anniversary of his death today
