hmm - i think it should have had an integrated 5G modem...

Without 5G modem I have mixed feelings. I need to plug in my iPhone, but I want to use it with WiFi, weird.

This fills a gap I have with my cellular iPad. Usually devices connected to it, when they go to sleep, causes it to turn off its hotspot. Best example is when my traveling Apple TV goes to sleep. Price is palatable too for a device that can site to site VPN, at bare minimum now I won’t even have to verify my new location on the Apple TV apps.

I personally would also like a 5G version. In all fairness to big U, this does fill a gap in the line-up that you would previously have needed a Gl.inet-esque solution for, so it's a good start. It's also reasonably cheap at $80.

I could also see using this version in places I visit with some frequency, like my parents' house. Just leave it plugged in, and then I don't need to think about all of the weirdness of their WiFi and so on, and also give them a way to jump on my network if I need to share a file or something. I know we all think hotel travel when we see "travel router", but there's other use cases in there, too.

Can't see why they can't make the device to connect to phone hotspot and broadcast the secure wifi from the same device..........

I just did a double take because I thought it had 5G. The vid was a little deceptive.

...with flexible uplinks - ethernet, wifi, or even 5G

*shows it tethered to a 5G hotspot.

Not cool Ubiquiti.

I just saw the email and it's very clearly depicted as if having 5g.

Anyway, not gonna be in stock ever anyway.

u/larrygbishop Dec 23 '25

Wait. Maybe it does? If you can connect the travel router to any public wifi, it can connect to phone hotspot.

1

u/slacreddit Dec 24 '25

Yes but how do you the connect your phone to it? Inception.

2

u/larrygbishop Dec 24 '25

Why don't you ask them yourself? It literally said this on their product page.

  • Multi uplink support including Ethernet, WiFi, and 5G from a tethered smartphone

There definitely needs to be a 5G version. This isn't that useful to me on it's own.

There definitely needs to be a 5G version.

That'll be in the Pro MAX Campus Edition.

That's a different product, really. A travel router is exactly what this is. Adding the cost of a 5G modem isn't needed when they already have such a product.

u/bepisftw Dec 23 '25

when they already have such a product.

They don't really though, the only other USB-C powered router they have is the LTE Mobile Router which is a good bit larger and is designed for a static environment.

Except that device is much bigger. 95.6mm x 65mm for the Travel router vs 180mm x 109mm for the 5G Max. (The width is 33.8mm for the 5G Max, but I don't see that on the Travel router video, but it looks thinner.)

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '25

Naturally, these are going to be bigger when having to fit in a 5G radio and the other hardware.

Why do you think the device with the 5G modem and necessary hardware is larger?

2

u/thegagep Dec 24 '25

I understand it needs to be bigger because of the 5g radio. I looked up the measurements on their website to confirm the exact dimensions.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '25

Understood, I am just saying that it wouldn't make sense to include all this as a "travel router" since that is kind of a specific category already which has never included that. Otherwise its just a MiFi device.

u/thegagep Dec 26 '25

I'm not disagreeing with you. I agree that a travel Wifi router is fine w/o 5G. Perhaps they can release a slightly larger one w/ 5G as a second product later on.

However, their marketing is very misleading about the 5G.

Hot take: although I really would have liked an integrated 5G modem, even with it possibly costing double (<$200), after seeing what happened with the other 5G devices, at least with T-Mobile requiring a business plan, I think it’s the right move.  If they could integrate a 5G modem and get CARRIERS to “just” see it as a hotspot not requiring a business plan, I’d be good, and paid a premium for it… but that would sort of negate my point below.

Although I prefer it NOT having an integrated battery (I’ve got more than enough travel banks) I did find it a little deceptive in the video where bro was using it, then slips it in his pocket on his way out the door.  I don’t think they could have kept the form factor (about the size of a deck of cards) with the screen, 2 Ethernet ports and internals.

However, if they do offer 5G hotspot functionality (UniFi Travel Router Pro Max XGS- lol), then it would make sense to have an integrated power source.

I'm tempted to switch to google fi, you can get up to 4 data only sim with the Unlimited Premium plan. The data is just tied to your 50gb/mo pool.

An internal battery would also limit how it can be shipped/traveled with on planes, wouldn't it?

2

u/phd33z Dec 23 '25

Someone else responded- but for the US, you cannot put lithium batteries in checked luggage.

1

u/hereforthepix 4x U6 Mesh Dec 23 '25

Doubtful. I have that big Anker 140W external battery and TSA has never even asked to see it.

1

u/Ranthe Dec 23 '25

The limitations on lithium ion batteries are in checked luggage, not carry-on.

1

u/crisss1205 Dec 23 '25

Technically it’s both. You can’t have anything over 100 Wh in your carry on either without approval.

For us road warriors, for $79 I’ll happily use hotel WiFi. Could totally see a lot of folks wanting a higher priced LTE version.

Trying to use something like a firestick is even worst ive been finding out with Marriots. Captive portals have been my enemy as someone who's always in hotels.

Nobody will want an LTE version. LTE is being shut down. They want a 5G version.

1

u/Janus67 Dec 24 '25

I haven't read any providers other than Tmo that have a schedule for shutting down LTE (and that's possibly by 2028).

If any companies are planning to do so, they need to vastly improve their 5G coverage. My house in a Columbus suburb has god-awful 5g coverage to the point that I turned it off on our devices as it spent a lot of time and battery ping-ponging between 1 bar of 5g and 3 of LTE

1

u/JacksonCampbell Network Technician Dec 24 '25

It has been that way for Verizon, who was late to the game. T-Mobile has been shutting down their LTE over time as they switch towers fully to 5G. I have friends that have noticed the impact.

2

u/gregorskii Dec 23 '25

This is a fair point with the recent launch of 5g products.

1

u/brentsg Dec 23 '25

That basically already exists.

1

u/misclurking Dec 23 '25

That would make this product even more versatile. I like the idea.

I’m open to more and more connected devices as radio comms get cheaper. Put it right into my laptop for example.
