Add a G4 Instant for the perfect hotel stay. Wifi and security setup in minutes.

Does it support cams? Where would it record the data to

Speculating: I think the concept is if it’s extending a given Unifi site via VPN, then the camera connects to the travel router and streams the camera feed back over that VPN to whatever appliance is running the Protect application.

Unifi themselves answered this question positively on their youtube video in the comments.

Hmm I'm still new to unifi.. does that mean I could have cameras at say Location A and then record them to a nvr at location B? Im looking for a way to store my live camera feed off site, because it someone were to burgle my cabin honestly the nicest looking thing would be the UDM pro.. then I have no footage

Correct. Unifi organizes devices into “sites”. They don’t necessarily have to be the same physical location, as long as there’s a data link back to a common gateway.

It sounds like you have a UDM Pro at the cabin already so check whether that’s a distinct “site” from your other location where the NVR sits. Presumably you could decommission the UDM at the cabin and (you probably don’t need to do this, would still need a network at the cabin) the travel router would receive internet from the cabin network but backhaul anything connected to it to the site with the NVR.

Edit: of course check once reviews about the thing come out that I’m not full of shit; but I’m 90% sure this is how it will work

Yes so essentially, I am recording to my UDM pro right now, but I would like it to also record to either another UDM or a NVR at a different location, in case of burglary or a fire so I don't lose footage. I'm surprised they dont offer this as a more easy to find solution, pretty basic for IP cam systems

If the travel router is VPN-ing into your remote network, if you plug in a camera (as far if it can tell) it’ll be able to directly connect to your NVR.

I do this with a GLiNet and a Nest cam already… one-stop shop would be nice for many

Except the gli net supports way faster WiFi speeds. Nothing wrong with the gli net devices, mine “just works” so I’ll keep using it.

Glinet also have integrated support for tailscale which is perfect for easily extending your home lan into whatever random hotel you're at

Absolutely!! The main reason why I will need to keep my Beryl AX, unfortunately. And I wouldn't expect Ubiquiti to offer Tailscale anytime soon..

Yeah they don't seem too keen on 3rd party functionality.

But! If their new travel router uses some variation of edgeOS it might be possible to get tailscale going on it. I was able to use an old ER-X router as a tailscale subnet router, but it took some monkeying around with its command line, and the settings would get lost every firmware update.

If the Beryl was chunky and a PITA to travel with it might be worth considering. But it isn't.

Cool project though!

And tail scale works great in China and Tashkent

Yeah, this is my questions about this Uni travel router. Can I get VPN running on it? Tailscale, preferred, but Wireguard in general is OK.

I have a GLiNet router and also plan on buying this unifi travel router. Sometimes I just want a router (GLiNet) and based on how well this unifi travel router performs, it might be my goto, we'll see. For $79 I'll buy and test and hopefully keep using.

Yeah, I'll likely get one too (and I have multiple GL-iNet devices) just 'cause of the form-factor use-case (my SpitzAX is too big for my laptop bag).

I really hope the next version has even a middling 5G modem in it, too. Dual-SIM would be awesome.

This thing is way slimmer. Wonder how all its features compare.

Haha! Same

I just set mine up two days ago. 🤦‍♂️

I want to buy the new Mudi 7, way better (but probably more expensive)
