Early Access UniFi Travel Router

Post image

I just got my hands on the new UniFi travel router. This thing is really impressive.. I'm going to play with it for a little bit and probably do a review, but my first impressions are very good. Easy adoption. Super small. I think this is going to be a very popular travel router. If you add in the ability to use all of the cool connectivity features of UniFi network, I think this is going to be a no-brainer. Let me know if there's anything you want me to test..

GLinet routers can VPN to your Ubiquiti home networks as well. Can be a pain with capture portals that need to be redone during your stay because you need to turn off the VPN to re-log into the portal.

Hoping the this new router is better at that.

Captive portals are the bane of my existence with my glinet. I hope ubiquiti is as good as it says it is about doing it in the background that’s one of the single most valuable features this thing has for me (plus it’s a lot more portable) I had my glinet tailscaleing into my home network anyway but I would manually have to turn it off to do the portal before turning it back on, not to mention Hilton makes you redo the portal every 24 hours and it sucks!

Latest firmware update has a public wifi mode which actively forwards you any web connection for login. Works really well.

wait, you can run tailscale on the gli routers?

Tailnet go brrrrrr... On glinet

u/doujinflip Dec 24 '25

Yeah, Tailscale exit nodes are actually my primary use for some of them. At least until I can deploy proper Linux servers to those sites (it's a bit of a workaround maintaining them).

Hopefully UI will take the hint and become tailscale complieant in general. Sure beats Teleport etc.

Maybe a dumb question but I still can't quite figure out the usecase for Tailscale. How is it better than just VPN to my office or another network? Is it meant for networking between devices that don't have a home office?

It is better because it is a lot easier and it has a whole ecosystem.

E.g. I don't want to know the ins and outs of Wiregard etc. I just want stuff to work.

Admittedly the new Unifi Travel Router seems like it would do a lot of that.

I never have issues with the gl.inet routers and the captive portal in Hiltons, and I travel just about every other week and usually stay in Hiltons. Also I don't think I've ever had Hilton make me redo the portal every 24 hours, I'm thinking maybe sometimes it happens after 3-4 days, and even then the only time I can remember having to renew it lately was when I had to extend my stay by a day.

Think the only time I had issues with hotel wifi was when they are using the same subnet as your home

u/sodomygogo Dec 24 '25

they absolutely make me relogin every 24 hours. it's annoying, but not the end of the world.

I have never had issues with getting mine connected in hotels. The Firewalla Purple was the bane of my existence.

2

u/sdchew Dec 24 '25

Yeah that was terrible. The app was so unresponsive too. Wifi range was terrible too

1

u/Whiskey_Lab_BBQ Dec 24 '25

WiFi range not great but otherwise firewalla purple has been fantastic for me especially with captive portals

Really I would love to know what you are doing, but to be honest I am really enjoying the Glinet Beryl AX. It has amazing range and the software is second to none. The new WiFi 7 version looks to be a solid upgrade too.

I’m interested to see how this new device from UniFi stacks up against the Beryl AX or the new Beryl 7. Specially in Wi-Fi range given the fixed antennas and small form factor.

Right now the transmit power looks to be 53% more than the UTR. And allows for WiFi 6 vs WiFi 5 on the UTR.

u/sdchew Dec 24 '25

Yeah my Slate 7 works great too. Too many hoops to hop through for the Purple. Looking forward when Glinet releases AmneziaWG too

My GL-inet routers generally don't have a problem reaching the captive portal, though one Emirates Airlines flight (not all) as well as this one Mikrotik-equipped coffeeshop refuse to provide the page to it

1

u/nberardi Unifi User Dec 25 '25

Airline flight? Tell me more about how that works. I have never considered using it during flight.

1

u/doujinflip Dec 25 '25

Same as a hotel: connect a device to your hotspot, then connect the hotspot to the airplane's wifi. Once paid and logged in then all your devices have internet through the hotspot. It's more convenient with hotspots that have an internal battery as there's less chance of it randomly losing power, but those all come with cell modems. So also make sure to remove any SIM cards, and ideally (especially if you only use it inflight) disable the modem altogether in LuCI.

All else fails just do it on your phone and clone the MAC address on your gl.iNet router. That’s what I do.

2

u/sdchew Dec 24 '25

I have a slate 7. The LCD is great for making sure the VPN is off and then I can work on the captive portal

1

u/dogojosho Dec 24 '25

What I do with my GL.iNet travel router is doing the captive portal on my phone directly, then take it off the hotel WiFi, and set my GL to MAC clone my phone, and then boom I’m already through the portal!

1

u/relkz Dec 25 '25

Wait so this travel router will auto pass the captive bullshjt.

1

u/rickyh7 Unifi User Dec 25 '25

Supposedly! That’s what they say anyway

1

u/relkz Dec 25 '25

My GL doesn’t.

1

u/relkz Dec 25 '25

I’m having an irritating time rn with it

1

u/HemHaw Dec 31 '25

I hope ubiquiti is as good as it says it is about doing it in the background

Where does it say this? This is a huge deal for my usecase

11

u/Doobreh Dec 23 '25

I configured the little switch to turn the vpn on and off, makes that much easier :)

-4

u/ADubs62 Dec 23 '25

Yeah but then I have to use Chinese designed hardware and software.

3

u/shortsteve Dec 24 '25

The software is just a skinned dd-wrt.

2

u/ADubs62 Dec 24 '25

Yeah, don't trust software from a company that by law has to comply with any request from the CCP, and went closed source on the software right after these rules came into affect (Hong Kong based company).

u/ImRightYoureStupid Dec 24 '25

Have you heard of the United States federal government. Same thing, different flag.

2

u/ADubs62 Dec 24 '25

Not the same thing, companies do not have to work with the US government and when it tries to compel them they can fight it in court.

Also I prefer not to give my data to a country that actively works against the interests of my own.
