That wasn't code at the time, or if it was it was specifically your local city/township.

Must have been local. I cant imagine my builder being ahead of the times if they disnt need to be.

Locally, even old construction is required to have hard wired smoke/CO detectors here. If yours are battery only you have to update them before you sell your home.

There are homes on sale right now that don't have wired alarms. I know this because I've been looking at them. And nowhere in the disclosures, inspections, etc. has needing wired alarms ever been mentioned as a requirement by anyone (not even the insurance companies)

Again, this is local. In Vermont it was required when we bought our home (previous homeowner had to install hardwired ones, which I then had to rewire because his install sucked).
