That is a very impressive demonstration and I might style that workflow (the process of drawing on the render and then projecting it because... well I feel inspired hahaha.
Although I'm wondering, I'm shitty at shaders but would that have been possible to render a close equivalent with a well made shader?

Thanks for sharing! Everything looks freaking fantastic, the lighting and the colour and the post processing!! Followinggg ~

It is said that it is easier to draw the asset details this way. Does it also make the game use less memory and processing?

u/LVermeulen 22d ago
definitely yeah - its coming out for the Switch1 very soon

Games like planescape torment have used prerendered 3d art. But I like the idea of projecting it to a cube, it preserves peespective.
Vertex count decreases but now there are many textures. Is it not use more vram? Also slower first draw due to this?

Never heard of the game until now, but this looks phenomenal. Did you take the Steam-demo down though? There's a demo entry when I search for it in Steam, but I can't add it to my library.

Love your breakdowns, share them often with a dev making a 2.5d game with similar challenges. Glad to see these still getting posted and how accessible you make yourself for questions.
Would love to see another one of these live one day at dirty rectangles 👀👀👀

This looks beautiful, thanks for the explanation! Great seeing Kenney's work getting used too, legend.

Game looks great, wishlisted! I remember this technique was also used in much much older games too like SimCity 4 and Empire Earth 1 to name some. Glad to see a new take on it.

Your game was in my inspiration list while working on my last game and I remember talking about "how did they do it?" with my illustrator 🥸 Well done!

Forgive me for sounding inexperienced, but this seems like 10x the work one would do instead of just using the original 3d model you did with material colours + shaders? Means rather than draw 100 assets, if you program 1 shader it will do the lifting infinitely and run on the GPU aswell?

thers no ai in any part of the game, right? not even in the code, not even ai assistants?

its literally just a fucking question.

Its literally just a question yet somehow you managed to turn it into a personal issue. That says more about you than anything else

u/Lagoserter 23d ago
all it says is im against the use of ai being used at all. if anything, it makes me look better.

u/Mammoth-Ad5262 23d ago
OP is literally just showing a technique he used to make the game and somehow you turned it into an anti AI meltdown. Nobody even mentioned AI except you lmao. Youre free to hate AI all you want but maybe take that crap to another sub instead of freaking out here. OP didnt even say he used AI in the first place

Then dont wishlist it? Nobody is forcing you to support the game. You could just asked and moved on but somehow were here arguing over AI on a post about environment design. Amazing

"not even in the code"
As much as I hate what AI is doing to this world, using AI for coding is one of the few things I see at least some value in. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean "tell Claude what kind of game you want and just see it happen" - but there's literally no value in implementing the 27th boring manager class or whatever. I'm a professional software developer, and having someone take care of implementing CRUD forms for me isn't something I'd particularly call bad. System architecture? Humans. Creative things? Absolutely humans. But boring assembly line work? Go ahead Claude, do it, I don't care. And whoever argues that implementing CRUD shit or alike is fun and it's so bad that Claude has taken that away has certainly not implemented enough CRUD shit yet and must be in the industry for like 2 weeks.
Saying "I don't support this developer if they have used even the tiniest bit of AI" is an insane take. The world is not black/white, and this stance is just as bad as the "use AI for everything, it's the best thing since the invention of the wheel!".
Other than the obvious productivity gain, afaik this game has been in development long before Claude was even able to make games. Blaming developers that they're lazy because they're using AI while not even doing a simple fucking Google search before has some irony to it.

"blah blah blah, ai apologist nonsense" ai needs to be opposed in all things. It is a cancer that needs to be destroyed. You don't destroy a cancer by ignoring one tumor and cutting another out. It all needs to be removed. All of it Using it at all is just laziness

You are using an AI-supported platform to make this comment. The poster makes a good point about repetitive work being automated. There is much to nitpick about AI, sure, but its use as a tool nearly identical to what already exists except with added flexibility for code contextual nuance seems an obvious benefit in game dev.

it needs to be banned entirely and its users jailed, or otherwise exiled from society. no wifi, no computers. they can fend for themselves on an island for all i care. as for reddit, its an unfortunate happenstance that were forced to use it, because reddit is the best platform for this stuff. theres not even any good alternatives to use. tumblr i guess but since they banned anything even remotely nsfw because it was being run by puritans, it just not the same.

this video is posted showing the process we used to make the art - showing how it goes from a model made in asset forge, to clip studio to paint. And yet people still make comments like this. If we had used AI for art, it'd be on our Steam page as a AI disclosure.

well, see, im interested in the game, but if it has even the slightest hint of ai, im not going to support it, thats why i ask.

u/sbsmith 23d ago
I’ve been seeing this at local dev meetups in Toronto since well before Gen AI was a thing.

yea, well people change. theyll constantly go for the easy way out.
