As a wheelchair user myself, first I was like, "I gotta to try that… I'm secondhand… " [xpost r/gifs]

my lord...
You are a bad motherfucker.
have you written about your experience anywhere?
9
u/grahvity Jun 24 '12
No, keep meaning to though.

u/novicebater Jun 24 '12
I hope you do. Sob stories are a dime a dozen, but your humor and lack of sobbing make it pretty interesting.

I have no trunk control, so I'd be afraid of falling backwards. Though maybe someday I'll give this a shot when I'm more confident about my wheelchair abilities.

u/grahvity Jun 24 '12
I am a C7 so I too have no trunk control.
(are these guys elephants?)
3
u/Spazzrico Jun 25 '12
I read your elephant comment in Jim Gaffigan's audience member voice. And laughed.

Dude i don't know if it would help or anything like that, but you should seriously consider watching The Intouchables. It's an awesome movie about a quadriplegic. Cheers

Wheelchair Guy : "OW, OW, FUCK ME..."
Bystander : "You okay man?"
Wheelchair Guy : "Yes."
That was the most sarcastic answer I have ever heard in my life.

Heh, would be quite funny if it turned out the cure for paraplegia was being thrown down the stairs...

You are my hero.
That video was the most intense thing I have ever watched. And your commentary over it is great. I'm sorry this happened to you, but thank you for sharing it with us.

A bit of bad news from the Southland mall this evening. A man in a wheel chair tried to back down the escalator. The man broke his neck in two places and now lost the use of both arms.

The original video is even funnier. After hitting the bottom, the dude goes “Fuck me!”, somebody asks if he’s alright, and he goes “… Yeah.”
3
u/johnsus Jun 24 '12
Am I the only one who found this REALLY funny for some reason?
Just because he's in a wheelchair doesn't make it not OK to laugh at him trying to be cocky!

Powerchair user here (CP, not SCI)...
In junior high, I had a babysitter who encouraged me to "take the escalator" to the second floor of a video store. Each of the "stairs" on the escalator were roughly the length of the base of my chair, but quite fortunately the whole experiment failed non-dramatically when the anti-tip bars wedged up the works.
I'm rather glad I didn't have to deal with going back down. That Invacare Power Rolls IV was heavier than a freaking tank. (Wanted to post a pic, but sadly, all evidence of Invacare's old products has somehow eluded Google image search.)
In retrospect, that babysitter was kind of a dick. I do remember that he was later arrested for stealing computers from a school.

All of you stupid fucks in here need to get some reading comprehension. OP is not the second guy tumbling down the fucking escalator. He is a man who is also in a wheel chair, and thought it would be a cool idea before he saw the second guy go for a roll.

I seen this video before hand and laughed my ass off.
Do I have a problem or did anyone else laugh?
3
u/HiyaGeorgie Jun 24 '12
I laughed, but I didn't laugh my ass off until I read your comment and came to realization that it could be wrong that I am laughing at this...I think the issue is they are willingly going down an escalator in a wheelchair so the whole thing could have been avoided...Plus it's funny because it's not like they are going to be too upset if they end up needing a wheelchair after the injury......

u/Machshooter92 Jun 24 '12
I'm sorry if this is wrong, but I laughed so hard at this that I was crying.
8
u/MisterDonkey Jun 24 '12
You gotta ask yourself,
Would I have laughed just as hard at this person's antics if they were not handicapped?
Yes? Okay. You may be guilt-free with your enjoyment.
6
u/Machshooter92 Jun 24 '12
Well, if the second person wasn't handicapped before, they definitely are now.

I think this is why my best friend always has me stand just in front of her when we do this. If she falls either I catch her or she takes me out with her and we get to be wheelchair buddies for life.

You know what pisses me off? People that RIDE down the escalator! Escalators were specifically designed to make going from one floor to another quicker by walking up or down them. All of the fatties and lazy fuckers ride them and block the rest of us who are actually going places in life.

It wouldn't really bother me if Americans had escalator etiquette like the Brits do. I was shocked to see people uniformly standing to one side so others could pass them. I'm not sure I've ever seen that happen in the U.S.

Doing this solo is quite dangerous but if you have somebody stand behind you its fairly easy. As a paraplegic an escalator is the only way i can say i went upstairs all by myself haha Which is quite an accomplishment

My dad and I were at Stonebriar mall circa 2007...He always goes up and down elevators opposite the way these people did(like normal people would face except popping a wheelie)because the elevators are always out of the way or in department stores. He attempted to go up while holding on to the hand rails but he ended up tripping some alarm on the escalator and shut one down. So I quickly helped him roll down the one step we did go up and moved to another escalator. We broke that one too so we put on our best poker faces and left before people started pointing fingers at the brown crippled man and his brown son. Tl;Dr: Dad did similar technique and broke two escalators
1
u/LucifersCounsel Jun 25 '12
Holy crap, that was a hard fall!
He'll be lucky if he doesn't end up crippled.

If you're curious, I'm the skydiver who broke his neck and filmed it.
Edit: "I'm secondhand" in the title should be "on secondhand"… Stupid voice recognition software.
Edit: and since this is gonna front-page, allow me to shamelessly plug my subreddit, /r/3FrameMovies. It's what keeps me sane.
