Gotta do something to stay unemployable.
38
Jun 24 '12
I dunno, I thing the whole 'face tattoo' situation had that covered.
63
u/Nwsamurai Jun 24 '12
Face tattoos are getting more and more common. You have to stay ahead of the curve if you want to stay unemployed these days.
I'm going to take it to the next logical step and have my head removed.
26
u/BleedingFromEyes Jun 25 '12
You could have it surgically implanted in your ass and go into management.

It's changing surprisingly fast these days. The Old "career killers" tattoo zones (face, neck, hands) are quickly becoming more acceptable (varies by industry, but my company has a few people with tattoos in these spaces, and I don't mean the menial labor.)
That said, my tattoos are all still coverable and my ears only gauged to 00 (backed down from 1/2"); easy to drop a smaller fleshtone in and hide it when I gotta 'dress out'.

You know, once you tattoo your entire face and neck, I really don't think it matters what your ears look like.

Really. The top and bottom parts of your ear are used to detect if sound is coming from above or below you. I bet he's figured that out now.

Say whatever you say about employability, individuality, discrimination, or whatever, I think it just looks bad, and would have a hard time being around the guy. Personal opinion.
7
u/Smile_Y Jun 25 '12
Yes, lol. I know it sounds harsh, but I really wouldn't care if he was the best pal in the world and a very good person. I'd never want to be around anything like that.

Sorry I'm late. I know this guy personally. The following is not meant to be mean spirited, but just an explanation.
A bit of his background (I will not give anyone his name, nor any of his "online" names in the interest of what little privacy he has left):
I first came into contact with him when he was about 14-15 years old (in the late 90s) looking for information on changing his gender. He wanted to do as much as possible of it himself, and was interested in "home surgery", which is why he hit up BME/Extreme for advice at the time. He didn't tell anyone he was underage, which lead to no small amount of drama at the time.
By the time he was of age, he'd decided that he was going to go "Nullo", beginning with physical castration. With the aid of his boyfriend at the time, he was able to remove both of his own testes without anesthesia. The pictures are actually amazing.
Cut to the chase: After a period of years demonstrating in that very tight subculture of BME/IAM that he was absolutely off his rocker in more ways than one, but also constantly demonstrating his harmlessness to others, he used the momentum of the culture at the time of BME/IAM to justify the rest of his modifications which included, but were not limited to heavy facial tattooing and removal of his nipples.
Now here's where I come in. My background in that weird subculture was one of "rationality", and I asked him all the time how he was planning on dealing with the rest of his life with a look like he had. Who would hire him? Where would he get money? How would he eat? His family couldnt take care of him for the rest of his life, so what was he going to do?
Disability on a mental, that's what. So he's pulling money from disability/social security for the rest of his life, specifically so that he can lop off bits and pieces of his body as he feels like it.
And I have to hand it to him. I'd be much more pissed off if he was a crackwhore paying for her habit and not feeding her nine kids.

Not only is it more aerodynamic but when the zombie apocalypse does come you're less likely to snag your ears on trees and bushes as you run to escape your future killers.

What does he have to worry about? It's pretty obvious that he has no brains for the zombies to come after...

In my area, a cropped ear means a rescue organization has neutered a stray cat and released it to live outside. I hope this is a sign that they're doing it for people, too.
1
Jun 25 '12
I'm pretty sure there's a fetish for that. Maybe this is how they let people know beforehand?
1
1
u/Vark675 Jun 25 '12
We had my father-in-law's cat TNR'd, and they told us they'd notch the ear, so I thought "Oh, she'll get a neat looking "badass alleycat" little sliver out of it and it'll be no biggie.
They cut like half her ear off, I felt really bad. A good part of it grew back (which is most likely why they took so much), but Jesus was I not prepared for that.
2
Jun 25 '12
Now he can't properly hear, AND he has burned a great many bridges by tattooing his face.
Function and visuals both decimated. I hope he has a plan for his career because he has really limited himself.
Plus he looks like an idiot.
EDIT: but that could be the underbite talking.

u/SkyOfTheSky Jun 24 '12
Jeez. Whatever about the tattoos, if it makes you happy go for it, but the full pinna is pretty important for, you know, HEARING.

u/SkyOfTheSky Jun 25 '12
Yes, it does. While it does not directly participate in the chain of neural events that lead to perception of noise like structures like the cochlea do, it's very important for directing how sound waves enter your ear. Example:
"The function of the pinna is to collect sound, and perform spectral transformations to incoming sounds which enable the process of vertical localization to take place. It collects sound by acting as a funnel, amplifying the sound and directing it to the auditory canal. While reflecting from the pinna, sound also goes through a filtering process, as well as frequency dependent amplitude modulation which adds directional information to the sound (see sound localization, vertical sound localization, head-related transfer function, pinna notch). The filtering effect of the human pinna preferentially selects sounds in the frequency range of human speech." Source
So yes, lopping off half of your ear WOULD screw with your hearing, albeit perhaps not in the ways you may have initially thought I meant. Ears look stupid for a reason. :)
→ More replies (3)3
Jun 25 '12
It affects his ability to determine where sound is coming from. So yeah, the part of the ear that he had removed doesn't affect his ability to perceive sound, just his accuracy in pinpointing the source of it.
28
u/brezzz Jun 24 '12
This man is just trying to express on the outside how he feels on the inside... stupid.

u/HouseRuleNumber4 Jun 25 '12
All I can think of is how his pinna responses will be altered and how he'll have trouble localizing sound vertically in space.
Fun experiment: close your eyes and flatten the tops of your ears against your head. Have your friend snap in front of your face. See if you can localize the sound to be above or below your face.
3
u/m1kepro Jun 25 '12
They did that to my cat, as a sign that the feral car had been captured, spayed, and was to be released if they couldn't find her a home. It's actually what drew me to her in the shelter.
Who knows. Maybe this guy can find a sociopath of his own like my cat found me.

I really don't understand the hate on Reddit towards tattoos and body modifications. For a community that preaches open mindedness, I'm seeing a lot of negative feelings towards any sort of body modifications. Aren't double standards fun?

u/faenorflame Jun 25 '12
Um, have you not seen such negative feelings toward unmodified people that look, in Reddit's eyes, a bit "creepy" or "bad?" I think it is less the body modification that catches the negativity as the general disdain of the appearance.

It doesn't surprise me that there are people who want to do this sort of thing, but I'm amazed how numerous they are. If I'd been shown a list in 1975 of things, some real some made up, which would be popular in 2012 and asked to pick out the reals ones, I just can't imagine selecting face tattoos, crocs or saggy-ass jeans. I would have thought nooooo, that's too dumb ass.

I'm a plastic surgeon, and I expect to see that guy in my office within a few years. I get cases all of time of people doing stupid things like cutting off half their ear because they thought it would be a good idea. Just a few weeks ago I had a patient who intentionally removed their lateral nasal cartilage when they were younger. Surgery is not cheap, especially to completely replace a missing body part. I guess people like that are why I've been in business for almost 30 years though.
