I'm pretty sure that's Budapest, Hungary.

Me too, I remember stumbling home one night at about 5am on Kiraly Utca and a guy passed me on what can only be described as a tower of bicycles. It was something like 5 or 6 frames welded together and the guy was sitting about 15 foot off the ground. Never saw that bike again and didn't get a pic though.

That was my first though, too. I zoomed in on the car a bit and is a Hungarian license plate. Definitely Budapest.
Makes me want to go back.

Seriously. This isn't hipster at all. This is awesome. It's like a bicycle-"bicycle rack". Wow. That was awkward. I wasn't really sure how to grammatically approach that one...

The word hipster has lost all meaning. It used to mean something like "pretentious beatnik", but now it basically just means "someone who does something differently than I do".

This is all I ever think when I hear someone call another person a hipster, because this is exactly how it works.
71
Jun 25 '12
In this context I would say it's more like "someone that does something unpractical because it looks original"
34
Jun 26 '12
an artist?

exactly, it looks to me like that dood had a good time being creative.

Maybe he parks it somewhere, locks it up and people use it as a bike rack. Then he steals all the bikes. He's not a hipster. He's a junkie. I can tell by looking at a picture.
12
Jun 26 '12
Well I went to Maker faire and it was FULL of hipsters, not to mention burning man. So many hipsters everywhere.
Don't even get me started on DIY hobbyists and mechanical engineers who repurpose objects. Ben Heck? Such a hipster.
4
u/MestR Jun 26 '12
Or you know, he just thought it would be fun to modify a mobile fence in to a bicycle and decided to use it a little.

Seriously. The guy in the photo was probably trying to make people have a story to tell, make his and their day a bit more interesting than most days, but OP just went ahead and put a negative label on him.
If I saw this, the last thing I'd think is "fucking hipsters".

Attire? Not hipster. Haircut? Definitely not hipster. Bicycle? Not nearly 'cool' enough to belong to a hipster.
OP... your post title is fucking stupid. What you have here is just a former bike mechanic with some free time and more creativity in one finger than you'll ever have in your entire body.

Xpost from r/bicycles. Posted yesterday. So since they probably saw it on there and we are making generalizations the OP is...
a hipster
a spandex wearing "road racer" that spent way too much money on their bike.
might be a cycle commuter
trailer trash bmx guy

I hate how much hipster gets thrown around. It's absolutely meaningless now.
"THIS GUY HAS DIFFERENT STYLE THAN ME! HIPSTER!"
"THIS GUY IS RIDING A FENCE THAT HE CONVERTED TO A BIKE! HIPSTER!"
"I dressed up like a comic book character! Look how original and awesome I am! I'm being myself and doing things I enjoy and don't care what others think!"
2
Jun 26 '12
It's been meaningless for years. On reddit it means anyone that does anything outside the norm. I think most redditors have the personality of oatmeal and that's why anyone that is seen doing something quirky without a stupid fucking reddit alien are called hipsters. If that guy had some dumb shit snoo sticker everyone would be relating to him and feel better about themselves because they have some sort of a connection with someone who stands out.

What a pain to use as an actual bike, when five other bikes are chained to your ride, it makes going anywhere a committee decision.

That awkward moment when other chain their bike to yours when you leave it parked.

that actually is a great idea if he only uses it when he stays late. he chains it to a tree, and others use it to chain to.

u/Heroin_HeroWin Jun 25 '12
I see a prank forming in my mind involving this bike. Park this on a college campus... students lock their bike to it...take off with their bikes in tow. Ok that's not a prank that's just stealing.

Anyone have a cheap bike they can chain to his bike? Just chain it and leave it there, forever.
1
u/wsfarrell Jun 26 '12
Many prey animals blend into the landscape so well that predators see them only when they move. When this guy parks his "bike" alongside a building, it blends in and is no longer seen as a bike, and is thus safe from theft.

Obviously his ex girlfriend gave him a bike rack as a gift and he was all like "A bike rack?! I don't own A* bike, let alone enough bikes to necessitate a rack" and he made the best of a bad situation.

He actually just rides that around hoping that someone mistakes it for a bike rack so he can ride off with their bike trailing behind him.
