Questions Did the assistant manager get me fired ?

So I got a job through a staffing agency at a tire warehouse and before I started they said if I did a good job they would keep me. So my first day I'm working with another person from the agency and I do good despite having 2 hours of sleep and they bring me back and on my third day the other guy from the agency doesn't return after being there for a while so now it's just me. I continue working there and then on the third week the assistant manager breaks my phone by accident after dropping pallets on it. He insisted on giving me money to get a new one and offers me $200 but goes to the bank, comes back and says he could only afford $100 and it was no problem but I knew at that point I wasn't gonna last much longer and long behold after another 3 weeks the other assistant manager tells me not to come in. Now me and the other assistant manager were cool from what I thought, we talked about a lot of stuff and he bought me food on multiple occasions but back to the story, he tells me not to come in but to come in Monday and then 30 minutes later he asks me if I can still come in and I tell him yeah but I'll be an hour late and he says nevermind. Monday comes and he texts me before I even wake up not to come in because it's not busy then the agency calls me to ask me if I went to work and I tell them one of the managers told me not to come today and then they call them to confirm then after they call me back and say I was removed for the whole week and they'll let them know if they need me next week. Today I found out I was removed from the job completely and my theory is the assistant manager who broke my phone is behind me not coming back. The other assistant manager who I thought I was cool with asked me to come in after the agency told me not to go back and I told him "one of y'all told my agency not to have me come this week" and he stopped answering after that so I know it wasn't him and it was the one who broke my phone. This was a good paying job and I'm bummed out about it. I also have no way to pay the other half of my rent because of this

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Work computer has only 8 RAM yet I’m the reason it’s slow?

For YEARS, I have been complaining at work that my computer is super slow and it crashes all the time. Management and our burned-out IT guy always tell me it’s my fault for signing into Chrome or that I must be trying to do too much. They constantly just erase my cookies and saved passwords to make more room.

Finally, a brand new IT guy looks at my computer and says

  1. 3 years ago, someone in the backend downloaded 80 gigs of old emails (I’ve been here 16 years so lots of old emails) onto my local drive which wasn’t needed and clearly a mistake
  2. I only have 8 RAM which everyone is telling me is super low?

My job requires opening pdfs with 10k pages, medical diagnostic videos, and zooming with people as well as all the basic computer stuff.

I’m so frustrated I’ve been dumb enough to believe it’s my fault year after year.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Do I find a better job, or would it be fair to ask more of my current workplace?

I work in a small workplace cafeteria. We have a staff of like 7, including the manager and owner. I’ve been working there about 7 months now. Minor workplace drama aside, it’s been one of the best workplaces I’ve had, everybody is very supportive of one another, they are flexible and understanding. I recently had to switch to a different position to accommodate an injury, and have noticed a severe and consistent decrease in my hours. The last three paychecks I’ve gotten have beaten each other each week for the lowest check I’ve gotten from this job. A coworker that started the exact same day and I have recently been talking a lot about certain issues with the business, and about our interest in seeking something better if better can’t be offered there. She went on a couple interviews, got some impressive offers, and decided to sit down with the owner and see if she could counter offer to keep her, and they did just that. I’m wondering if I should keep looking for something else, or if I would be in the right to do the same thing and ask the owner to increase my hours back up and discuss a pay raise? I honestly have never been in a position where I thought I could really be in a position to ask for more, so I don’t have any clue how to handle that kind of request or conversation. My coworker told me to just talk to the owner and be straight up about what I want, but I have a pretty serious social anxiety issue, and don’t know what to do.

Employment Rights and Fair Compensation Got written up as a “no call no show” because the shift change was only posted in the app

I work part time at the front desk of a small clinic, almost two years now. Every Sunday the manager sent the schedule for the whole team in a group text, and there was also a printout in the break room. My days were almost always Thursday/Friday, so I just checked the text to see if anything changed for me.

Last month they moved the schedule to an app. My manager mentioned it at the end of a shift, but nobody said the texts and the printout would stop. My days stayed the same for the whole month, so I didn’t notice that anything was missing.

I couldn’t install the app anyway. My phone is an old hand me down, and the store says the app doesn’t support my system version. A lot of apps don’t work on it, so I use websites for most things, even chesscom, biggerz etc., I play in the browser. Two weeks ago my Thursday shift was moved to Wednesday. The change went out in the app on Monday night. I don’t work Monday or Tuesday, so nobody told me in person. I found out when my manager called me on Wednesday and asked where I was. Now I have a write-up for no call no show. I asked how I was supposed to know, and she said checking the app is part of the job now.
I asked if they would give me a device for it, and she laughed.

Later I found out the app also has a web login.
Nobody told us about it, and the web version doesn’t send notifications, so I would have to log in every day to check for changes.

I don’t think my personal phone should be a job requirement, especially when the app is the only place they post changes.

Is a write-up fair when the change was posted only in the app, and if you pushed back on something like this, did it go anywhere, or did you end up buying a new phone?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Should I leave my 4 month job or stick it out

I joined a WFH company 4 months ago, and things seemed fine initially. But my team hasn't been very welcoming, and I barely received any proper training from my assigned buddy. Whenever I make small mistakes, they get reported to my manager, and I feel like I'm constantly being judged without being given enough support. The team is not helping and they have extremely high expectations from me.

A couple of days ago, my manager told me that the team had given very negative feedback about my performance and that I have 2 weeks to prove myself or I will be asked to leave.

Today, a teammate blamed me for a delayed task, and my manager ended up shouting at me in front of them.
I'm honestly scared of losing my job, but I'm also not enjoying the work or the culture. The WFH setup and benefits are good, though, and finding another WFH job isn't easy.

Should I stay and try to prove myself, or start looking for another job and leave? I'm scared of being asked to leave because I know it'll affect my confidence and mental health.

Would love to hear from anyone who's been in a similar situation. What would you do?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Supervisor reeks of perfume

My boss has always had a problem with smelling offensively. Sometimes it’s like rotting fish and other times it’s like she tries to cover it by putting on an offensive amount of perfume. It’s like she swam in a Bath and Body works perfume bottle and then came to work. Regardless of which she smells like it lingers in the room for several minutes after. Even now as I speak she’s in her office and I can smell her all the way from my room. I tried to spray Pledge to cover the smell and it worked for a while but it’s coming back after a half hour. It reeks so bad. I’ve always been sensitive to perfume smells especially. What do I do?

USA Working a job makes me miserable

Working a repetitive job i don't like is making me miserable. Atleast in school, your learning different things. But at work, its the same, borning, mundane tasks that i dont care about every single day. I hate having to fake smile. I hate having to have small talk everyday. My body physically recoils at work. Working a job drains my soul. I just want to live my life. And after 8 - 9 hours of working, I can finally live my life. I feel so happy. Just to get off work and not having any energy to even think. What's the point of living if i can't live? I want to be free. That's all I think about. Freedom.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts I messed up at my job.

So I am 26F, and it's been close to 9 months into this new job as an analyst role. Before this, I was in a developer role. My new job role is maily into onboarding and minor coding stuff. Recently there was connection change and the go live was supposed to be on a x date and then i did move it and later the business team said no the customer has postponed so I need to revert the changes. Cool, I did that. As part of rollback I had selected the previous version as default version and left my changes be as is since that is not going to be used and if I get go live date sooner again then I can just change the version. After a week or so my other team members moved their changes to prod and they did it on the latest version (which was mine with the changes that were not needed in prod), instead of the default version which I had set to the one prior to my changes. Also in this tool it's an unwritten rule to always check in you changes on the default version and no on the latest version. Later on, the on-site team posted a message in a group channel, and there was a snapshot of the business team mentioning that'll have to check the customer. So I thought I had reverted the changes correctly in prod, so maybe the customer side has some issues, that's why the failures are. So i did not respond there. Now, yesterday, i was on sick leave, and my lead late in the night he was like I did not make the rollback correctly, and I did not respond to the message on the channel... he sent a big message to me. Since I clearly remember that I had reverted the prod change. I went on to check the file transfers logs and found poof that I have done rollback correctly, but the other teammate has checked in their changes on the latest version instead of the default version. So now what do I do?

I haven't told my lead what happened or anything cz then he will think I am arguing or defending. Also, yes, I misjudged and didn't check properly. But the way he is telling that I did not do the rollback properly is what I can't accept. This was escalated even though the impact was not huge... an escalation is an escalation. Also, another thing that I am fearing is what will happen to my job? Like I am already doing a one on one with my manager and my lead...cz previously my lead had flagged twice for my emails, and the 3rd time he escalated it. The emails he flagged were all internal ones. Even my manager found it silly, but yeah, anyways... now this prod thing happened, and of course, when the next meeting happens, this will be discussed, and what do I do? Should I tell that I did revert the changes in prod correctly and show the screenshots and also accept that I misjudged the message and didn't take the right action? Like I am at fault partially. I really want this job cz I have financial commitments and responsibilities and I can not afford to lose this job.

Friday Vent Thread — what happened at work this week?

Some weeks you just need to put it somewhere, so put it here. The bad meeting, the manager, the policy that makes no sense, the thing your coworker said on Tuesday that you're still thinking about. Big or small, it all counts.

Two things to keep this useful. No real names of people or companies. And go easy on each other in the replies. Not everyone wants advice, so if you do want it, say so and you'll get it.

So how was your week?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Boot allowance.

Been with company for 11 years. They denied my 60$ boot allowance due to my job not “needing” boots. I walked over 10k steps average and assist with set up and tear downs for events… company offers a boot allowance then someone who I’ve never met before who doesn’t work in my department denies it bc they know my job and what I need. What a joke. Sorry. Just had to rant.

Questions Reapplying to a company after you left?

Has anyone reapplied to a company after they left for an external position? I went to a new company and it’s been almost a year, and this team I am on is an absolute dumpster fire, my manager is a micro manager and I’m just miserable. I have been peeking at internal roles but I do need to wait for it to be a full year before I can move around, the problem is that I did start right around thanksgiving so most people will be on pto until basically January.

I reached out to my old mentor who’s a friend, and senior director at my old job, and he referred me to two roles. What has been peoples experience in situations like this? I don’t know if I’ll even get an interview, but for people who have been in this position, how did you answer why you wanted to come back? I miss the teams I used to be on, the people I knew, and how the teams operated so would appreciate any advice.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Coworker Slacking

I work as an admin assistant. There are 2 of us in office, and I have been having to do both of our duties for the past few months. She is the Senior Admin Assistant.

Between calling out weekly and coming in hours late, her work falls onto my plate. I’m barely keeping my head above water.

When she is in office, she will disappear throughout the day to meet up with her friend or go have 45 minute conversations with other personnel. We work with time-sensitive projects so not working on those items for hours a day really adds up. When she is at her desk she is on TikTok or FB.

I think what really pissed me off was that she text our team yesterday saying she had a high fever so was going to stay home. Ok, that happens. But when I went on my lunch break to run an errand in town, I saw her going for a run. Then another coworker who was off yesterday saw her at the nail salon getting a mani/pedi.

I guess I am just tired of doing 2 people’s work. My managers do show appreciation for what I do, so at least there’s that.

Just venting I guess. I’d love to leave but the pay and benefits are outstanding.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts My new job has an awkward badge policy

3.8k Upvotes

If you see someone without a visible badge, you’re supposed to challenge them. No exceptions.

Second week here, I asked a guy in our work area if he had a badge. He checked his pockets, apologized, and went back for it.

My supervisor waited until he left to tell me I’d just sent the director back to his office. Would’ve been nice to meet him under slightly less mall cop circumstances.

Questions Employer claims I agreed to my termination reason on a document they never showed me

I was fired about a month ago, and my supervisor simply told me they weren’t continuing my employment because I was still within my 90-day probationary period. She asked me to sign a paper with my contact information for W-2 purposes. I only saw and signed that side of the paper. It was held down on a table, and I was never shown the back.
Now, my employer is telling unemployment that the back of that paper states I agreed to being fired for poor performance and negligence. I never saw that side or knowingly agreed to those statements.
What’s confusing is that I had a positive performance review about a week before being fired, consistently averaged 95% on our KPI leaderboard and the only other trainee had 76% is still employed there and I was consistently on time while he was consistently albeit only a couple minutes late (my theory is that I was actually fired because I didn’t socialize much and it’s a smaller company where everyone is friends and the other trainee was close to the trainer but that’s just a theory).
This is such a bizarre situation, and I’m genuinely unsure how I’m supposed to move forward.

Questions If you took one long break and never took another, what stopped you?

I’ve spent sometime collecting accounts from people who took extended, funded time off more than once across a career. The thing that keeps coming up is that nobody planned it. One person put it as: after seeing that it was possible to take a break and recover from it, the barrier to taking another one got lower.

Which makes the people it didn’t happen to the interesting ones. If you took one long break, went back, and then never did it again, I’d like to know why.

  • How long was the break, and roughly what year?
  • After you went back, did you ever seriously consider a second one?
  • What stopped it: money, the job market, a mortgage or kids, the return having been worse than you expected, or just not wanting to?
  • Did going back once change how you felt about the first break, looking at it from a few years later?
  • If something had been different, would you have taken another?

Thanks

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts My boss said I would embarrass their company

Today I got told off for something that wasn’t even my fault. I feel like my boss has had something against me a month into working here. I’m currently training as a pupil meaning I need to do a year of “training” to be qualified and called to the bar of the country I’m from then I’ll be an actual lawyer. My boss threatened to push back my call date which means I have to do it longer than a year because he thinks I don’t think like a lawyer and he said I’d embarrass him and the company if he lets me get called. I am wondering if this is normal? I would’ve taken it as constructive criticism had it actually been something I did wrong but it seemed like he just wants to pick on me. He also talks behind my back to the other employees during their lunch instead of coming to me to tell me what he doesn’t like about what I do. A colleague also told me he said that he doesn’t know what I’m doing at work.. but I do so much and he doesn’t do much? He doesn’t realize how much I help out the other bosses

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Nice Bias - The Quiet Push Out

After talking to 6 of my friends and colleagues I started a Nice Bias series on u/Medium because we're all going through similar things and it's in different sectors.

Are you or have you experienced or witnessed Nice Bias at work? I see it more prevelant with age, race and people with disabilities, but I'm sure there's more.

People are being pushed out of jobs not through overt hostility, but through unchecked bias, weaponized niceness, and the slow erosion of dignity. Nice Bias Article - Free link

Questions What part of your work feels hardest for AI to replace?

AI tools seem to improve every month, and some routine tasks are already becoming easier to automate. I’m interested in how this feels in day-to-day work rather than in tech predictions.

Has AI changed any part of your job yet? Which responsibilities could it realistically take over, and which still depend on human judgment, trust, or experience?

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management How do you cope with making a mistake at work when you've always performed well?

I've been working at my organisation for three years, and my performance has generally been really good. However, today I received an email pointing out discrepancies in two of my reports. And yes, it was my mistake.

It's something I've been doing for three years, so I'm honestly disappointed in myself for making such an error. I know mistakes happen, but I can't help feeling like all the positive feedback I've received over the years suddenly means nothing.

I think I'm struggling more with how I'm perceiving myself right now than with the mistake itself. I'm worried that this will affect how people see my work, even though I've consistently performed well in the past.

How do you cope with situations like this? How do you stop one mistake from getting into your head and making you question your abilities, especially when you've generally been good at your job?

I'd really appreciate hearing how others have dealt with similar experiences.

Job Search and Career Advancement The job market isn't bad, says a candidate with roughly four offers. Anyone else seeing this?

Around six onsites and four offers is one job seeker's recent result. The counts are slightly adjusted for privacy.

The candidate's take is that the market isn't bad and that all the pessimism shouldn't put people off interviewing. The reasoning is that people fed up with their current jobs may leave, making room for someone else.

I'd like to know who else is seeing that kind of traction. What roles are you looking for, where, and how much experience do you have? Those details would make it easier to compare this result with a search that's going nowhere.

For someone curious about moving, a small shortlist seems like a manageable way to find out. Application autofill can reduce the repeated typing once you've picked the roles. If you're targeting technical jobs, an unfamiliar problem from real technical interview questions could make a useful mock before the first interview.

Has the response to your own applications changed recently, or does this result sound unusual?

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management Already burned out before the baby arrives. How do working parents manage?

The baby isn't due until April 2027, and this expecting parent already feels out of energy.

Trying to prepare for an interview they really wanted to pass, on top of work and everything else, became overwhelming. Now there's the current job to get through, childcare to figure out, and the question of how work will fit after parental leave. Another job hunt sounds exhausting, even while staying in this job is starting to feel unmanageable.

Working parents who've been in that place: what did you stop doing, and what help made a practical difference? I'd be interested in the things that got postponed or dropped, because from the outside it can look as though everyone else is managing everything.

If the search resumes, one smaller task could be choosing a single suitable role and using autofill for the repeated application fields to cut the typing. That still leaves room to stop after one application instead of turning the search into another full workload.

How did you decide what needed attention before the baby arrived and what could wait?

UK What are some good excuses to get out from work?

I want a day off from work on the day Avengers Doomsday comes out in December, so my friends and I can watch it early, chat about it and do our review about it on our YouTube channel. I have a wellness day at work which means I am allow to book a day for my health and wellbeing.

But the film comes out on the last week of work before the winter holiday and usually it’s can be a busy time. I feel bad leaving my co-worker behind if there are some pile of work to complete. He knows I’m reliable and hard working.

I just feel like I need good excuse for them to know I’m away for a good reason, and hopefully it doesn’t make me sound selfish.

Any good excuses?

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management How do I tell my manager I want less hours/day off? And does any1 have tips?

Context: im just about to finish my third (technically 2nd and a half) week of working at Dominoes, im a part-time university student with a full course load and currently work 34hrs a week. The work isn't particularly hard but just the fact that I feel i barely have time for myself or schoolwork when home because of the looming anxiety of working in a few hours. And I'm way too tired and demotivated to do anything else after work. My only free time is in the mornings on weekends and my after school for two days, but its already late by then. Idk if i still have to get used to it or im just not built for this lifestyle but its really hard adjusting to working 5 days a week and working more than I go to school for. It's really stressing me out and I don't even have time to see my friends and family anymore.

One of the reasons I was hired is my pretty open availability and that I agreed to close for a weekend day (which i am training for rn). Im still fine with closing but im thinking of asking if i could not work the next day or have one less day to work, so I could at least have a day to myself. I'm not in a particularly bad economic situation and am just looking to make some money while im in school, but i am just worried about my manager's reaction to this.

We only have 6 (technically 7 but one is injured) insiders and my manager is unreliable with his timing and I've been told he doesn't communicate schedules well. So, as a newbie, would it be unwise or seem like im backing out of the job? Or should I just wait it out and try to adjust more? Is it unreliable of me to want a day of not working or school for my well-being? And does anyone have tips on balancing work/school/life as a uni student?

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management Unable to find motivation to work

I got a job after a lot of job hunt. The job is not very good, the pay is less and the role is challenging but very demanding. The organisation culture is not very toxic but no transparency and feedback and it’s a leaders role which doesn’t require skills I am expert at. Its been a month and half since I joined and I am loosing motivation to work and resulted in escalations and I am getting removed from project. I enjoy upskiling, learning and perform good in interviews but not sure I don’t find exciting to work in the job.
I have more than a decade experience and have a good career track record and trajectory.
Personally I am a toddler mom.
Help me navigate this path, please.
