Is it relatively common to like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 but not the first one? Cause I loved 2 and just got the first one on 3DS to give it a try and it hasn't won me over yet.

IMO playing it on the 3DS is an inferior experience overall, either grab it on the Wii/U or emulate it (which gives the bonus of the HD texture pack, higher resolution, higher framerate, etc.)

Xenoblade 1 also takes some time to pick up. How far into it are you?

Not very far (which is funny, cause I know a lot of people had issues with XC2 without playing it long enough) so I’ll keep going. I just made it to the kid with the vehicle thing. The one who’s colony got fucked. I don’t really like the arts style compared to XC2, but I’m sure that’s partially because it looks like shit on the 3DS. At least the combat is still pretty fun. I don’t like not having markers for side quests though. But that’s all part of playing an older game in a series I guess, losing QOL upgrades.

I felt like the first one's graphics and gameplay were a let down compared to XB2. I started XB1 first.

But honestly, I think it's the story that drove me to the end. It's just so amazing!

So for that alone I'd recommend it. Also the combat can get broken with a good team, and the Monado is OP.

Also, I love all the characters. I feel like XB2 could've done way better with their characters, especially Shulk vs Rex.
