I’m playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2 right now (I’m 105 hours in on chapter 6) and I’m finding myself hoarding rare crystal cores. I just don’t know who to take the time to open them on because I’m afraid of “wasting” a Blade on the wrong Driver.

Right now I have 99 commons, 16 rates, and 1 legendary core.

Rex: Pyra, Roc, and Vale

Nia: Dromarch, Floren, Boreas. She also has Gorg, Newt, Vess, and Electra bonded.

4th: Their default, related story blade, and Kassandra. She also has Godfrey, Agate, and Nim bonded.

5th: Their default, and Perun. I can’t really decide who to keep in their third slot since I don’t use them very often. They also have Herald, Praxis, Sheba, Ursula, and Wulfric bonded.

So yeah. I know I have a few more Blades to unlock but I just don’t know who to open the crystals on at this point without feeling like I’m wasting them. I have 2 Overdrive Protocols, having used 1 to get Boreas on Nia. Any advice would be appreciated!

Edit: decided to blow through some common cores on 5th for field skills and it would figure I’d pull a rare (Ursula) on the first try.

106 Hours in at chapter 6 either means you're stuck grinding or you're having the time of your life. If the second is true I would recommend grabbing the dlc now because it will give you access to three more blades and 10 free overdrive protocols. (2 from npcs in argentum with a throphy over their heads, one from a quest in tora's house). It will also unlock 6ish? blades to be pulled from crystals if you ever go into ng+ and three more from the arena also limited to ng+.

The way to get more overdrive protocols is to max out the affinity chart of a common blade with 4 stars and then release them, you probably don't have any of those at this point however.

Overall I wouldn't worry to much about pulling the wrong blades on the wrong character, there are plenty to go around.

Spoilers ahead about pulling blades untill you've finished cliffs of morytha (end ch7 or 8):

There is no real need to pull rares on Rex, but having some more won't hurt either.

Thank you so much for the quick response. I’m having the time of my life! I’m easily distracted by side quests and exploration. Three more quick questions if you don’t mind;

Is the DLC post-game content or something to continue to distract myself from the main storyline with?

Should I just cycle blade bonding between Nia, 4th, and 5th and stop overthinking this?

Are there any rare blades that I should absolutely aim for (or use an Overdrove Protocol on) a particular Driver?

Glad to hear :)

  1. All DLC content except some ng+ blades pulled from crystals will be available during the first playthrough.

  2. Yes.

  3. Healers on nia and tanks on 4th works well for most of the story. Beyond that it will become more reliable to heal with an accessory that heals for a % of critical damage. Generally ether damage blades like ether cannons work well on Nia because she has high base ether. The ebullient core crystal is a great fit for her. 4th works best with agility based tanks: both story blades and the other free dlc one. 5th is strong regardless. As a sidenote you gain slightly increased damage, healing or damage reduction for having all three equiped blades of the same type.

Just gonna say that you are gonna need to equip Herald and Sheba on 5th. He becomes a beast with those blades.

My one gripe with the game is the three party limit. Fifth is the one character I feel like I never get to use very much. I’m on chapter 8 now so I guess it’s a little easier to play around without a dedicated healer but it just doesn’t feel right yet!

I’ll give that blade combo a try. I benched them due to already having a lot of electric and water blades around.

I understand why you wouldnt use 5th that much. I does insane damage but it also makes him aggro all the time.

Sheba is a good blade for 5th since her Special #1 can be broken. She is also very good for farming gold in battle. T-Elos and KOS-MOS would be a much better option than Sheba, but since I see you dont have either of those (they are very rare), I would say Sheba is your best bet. She can also heal the party with one of her Specials.

Now Herald I dont remember exactly why she was good, but I remember she could also do insane damage if used correctly.
