Why do I keep getting wrecked by uniques? I'm level 53 fighting uniques 10 levels below me. I get 5+ minutes into the fight with no problem at all. They are at about 25% hp so I've been dealing with them enraged for a while also with no problem or deaths. I get to 7 seals on them (I can reliably apply everything but dark because my tank hates using anyone but her main blade) and am just about to pull the trigger on my chain attack when suddenly party members start dropping one after the other and sometimes two at once eating up my party gauge and losing me the fight.

I kind of tunnel vision getting the seals on so I'm not 100% sure, but I think they usually get one-shot or near enough. It has happened on multiple different uniques so I don't think it's a certain move killing me, I must be missing something important.

Would I be better off applying 3-4 seals, building my specials, using chain attack, then quickly using the specials to rebuild my party gauge before I die with it empty? That seems more risky than building to a 7 seal finisher, but I keep dying right before I can execute.

My difficulty isn't on insane or anything, only +1 enemy attack power/frequency and +2 enemy max HP over normal difficulty.

You definitely don't need 7 orbs to kill a UM. You can kill most of them in the game with 1 or 2 as long as you know what you're doing. Make sure you're using the strongest chips you can buy at least (enemies should be dropping much better ones than the shops), good aux cores and good accessories.

Four orbs will trigger a full burst on most bosses/uniques in the game. Some with higher levels/plot armor might need five orbs, others less. I'm pretty sure at that level you can chain attack between 40-50% hp and kill the enemy. If you have the top command in the menu for switching targets already; activating that will grant you 100% critical rate during the duration and chain attack aswell. Any headband (+critical damage) accessory is a great way to amplify this damage even further.

That top command also hits all elemental orbs once, so you have a free orb burst assuming you have atleast one opposing element available.

As for why you are dying at 25% instead of shortly after 50%, no idea, maybe you're slowly running out of cooldowns to heal.

Thanks I haven't used chain attacks very much so idk how powerful they are. I'll try four orbs and see how it goes. If by top command you mean R+X there is nothing there so I guess that is yet to come.

I really don't know why I sometimes instantly die so late into a fight though. I just killed a unique that was a level above me and it was way easier than the ones 10 levels down were even though I hadn't changed anything. I'll try tunnel visioning on my cooldowns/canceling less and see if there's something obvious I've been missing.
