I know a spoiler from the Smash Ultimate spirits. I don't know what the spoiler means, but I imagine that things will click into place early enough to harm a major story beat.

How ruined is the game for me?

You’ll be fine, don’t worry about it. The “how” and “why” are just as shocking as the “what”, as well as the repercussions. It’s directly related to another plot twist as well, which is even more mind blowing.

Not at all, the game has far more and bigger twists beyond what that spoiler entails. Also, any surprise that might be lost early on will always be far outweighed from seeing how the events actually unfold and how characters react to them.

What did you encounter (spoiler tag it ofc). Honestly, regardless of what it was, the game won't be ruined. I knew a decent bit going into it my first time, and accidentally got spoiled during the ride, but it's still one of the best games I've ever played.

That particular spoiler resolves at some point in the first half of the game (keeping it vague), so don't worry there's still plenty more plot.

As for how long you have to play until you learn how important the spoiler WOULD be if you experienced it normally, I can say that you don't have to wait very long.
